  • This study aims to explore the effect of combined stimulation consisting of relaxation-inducing scent and high-concentration oxygen on psychological/physiological responses. The cerebral blood flow responses and arousal that occur when oxygen concentration is controlled under the same scent conditions were observed. The experiment's scent was lavender oil (relaxing scent), and the oxygen concentrations were normal (21%) and high (30%). The experiment involved 12 male adults repeating a 5-minute rest period and a 5-minute stimulation period. The hemoglobin (HbO) concentration was extracted using the Beer-Lambert law to observe cerebral blood flow responses. Arousal was assessed using a 5-point scale questionnaire. A paired t-test was used to compare the two stimuli (lavender +21%, lavender +30%). Results reveal that HbO concentration in the frontal lobe increased, whereas arousal decreased at lavender +30% vs. lavender +21%. These results suggest that adding high-concentration oxygen to scent stimulation can induce more brain activation and relaxation.

  • The healing effect of the aroma treated fabrics with lavender and lemon aromas was investigated by assessing the autonomic nervous responses of human body. For this cause Lemon and lavender microcapsules were coated on a cotton fabric using a water-based acrylic binder, respectively. And the study created a total of four aroma treated fabrics at a concentration of 2% and 5% respectively. Electrocardiogram(ECG), skin conductance, and Blood flow, of ten participants were measured for 30 sec at a stable condition, at a stress status (working memory task), and at a stimulation status (after rubbing aroma treated fabrics). Subjective sensibilities of the aromas were also evaluated. With regard to the responses of the autonomic nervous system, in order to understand how the values gained after the normalization process would cause different physiological signals between the stable state and the aroma-stimulated state as well as between the stress state and the aroma-stimulated state, the study conducted a non-parametric test, friedman test as well and analyzed tendencies. LF/HF turned out to be significantly different to the stress state, and according to the results of the post-hoc comparison, lemon 5% presented statistically significant differences among the lavender 2%, lavender5%, lemon2%. Lemon 5% stimuli increased stress but stimuli consisting of the lavender 2%, the lavender 5% and the lemon 2% decreased stress because of a psychological rest. And the stimuli of the lavender 2%, the lavender 5%, the lemon 2% presented a healing effect in this research.

  • This study investigated the effects of Lavandula angustifolia (L. angustifolia) aroma on the brain electrical activity evaluated by an electroencephalogram (EEG) in the male adults since many researches were performed with females and few with males. Sleep quality of 35 male adults were analyzed by Pittsburgh sleep quality index, and they were divided into two groups of good sleep quality and poor sleep quality. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal (F3, F4), temporal (T3, T4), occipital (O1, O2), and parietal (P3, P4) regions according to the International 10-20 system. EEG was measured for 3 min per each period of before, during, and after L. angustifolia aromatherapy. Subjects with good sleep quality showed increases in the delta power at the parietal region of both cerebral hemispheres and in the theta power at the temporal region of right hemisphere (p<0.05), and a decrease in the alpha at the parietal region of both cerebral hemispheres (p<0.05). And subjects with poor sleep quality showed increases in the delta power at the frontal region of left cerebral hemisphere and in the theta power at the frontal region of both hemispheres (p<0.05). It is concluded that L. angustifolia aroma has effects on decreasing an awakening status related-brain wave and increasing the sleep status related-brain waves in the male adults with good sleep quality, and has also effects on increasing the sleep status related-brain waves in the male adults with poor sleep quality.

  • Signals reduced from the brain had been considered as a noise that is caused by the stochastic process until 1980. The recent non-linear dynamic theory researches, however, reported that these signals are meaningful and deterministic chaos signals in which they show how the brain deals with various information Since this report, a wide range of researches has been carried out and still in progress. Thus, by using the correlational dimension, one of the non-linear analytical methods, the characteristics of the brain signals can be analyzed. In this thesis, the scent of lavender, which stimulates the olfactory sense, is introduced to measure EEG with the International 10-20 electrode system on 16 channels, and to analyze the interrelationship between the original signals before the stimulation and the changed signals after the stimulation. Finally, the effect of the scent stimulation to the brain is analyzed. The purpose of this thesis is to apply these analyzed results to the computerized mapping of the brain signals and possible ways of specifying the source of the brain signals through various medical applications.

  • This study investigated the effects of Lavandula angustifolia (L. angustifolia) aroma on the brain electrical activity evaluated by electroencephalogram (EEG) in female adults with sleep disorders. The subjects were 28 healthy female adults and their sleep disorders were classified by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal (F3, F4), temporal (T3, T4), occipital (O1, O2), parietal (P3, P4), reference, and ground regions according to the International 10-20 system. Subjects were exposed to the L. angustifolia aroma for 3 min. Results showed that L. angustifolia aroma decreased the occipital and parietal alpha powers, and increased the frontal theta power and occipital beta power in subjects with good sleep quality. On the other hand, L. angustifolia aroma increased the theta power in the all cranial regions after aroma treatment in subjects with poor sleep quality. In conclusion, L. angustifolia aroma diminishes a state of wakefulness in the brain and helps individuals to fall asleep. Therefore, L. angustifolia aroma may have beneficial effect for female adults with sleep disorders.

사용된 향은 100%의 Rose oil bulgarian, Lemon oil misitano, Jasmin abs., Lavender oil france (KIMEX co.

  • This study aims to find a discriminatory way that can lower the dependence on imports of aroma essential oils and increase the value of herb plants that are growing in domestic demand and cultivation. To this end, through a study that analyzes and reproduces fragrance components without damaging the original material of domestically grown lavender flowers using the SPME method, we are trying to confirm the difference in fragrance composition from lavender essential oil and find the fragrance originality of domestically grown herb plants. A total of 38 kinds of lavender essential oils and 27 kinds of lavender flowers were analyzed as fragrance ingredients, Among them, the common ingredients were myrcene, d-limonene, 1,8-cineol, ocimene, p-cymene, α-terpinolene, camphor, linalool, linalyl acetate, bornyl acetate, 4-terpineol, and a-terpineol. In addition, among the fragrance components of the two samples, it was confirmed that the type and content of allergens of domestically cultivated lanvender flowers were low. As a result of the sensuality evaluation of 15 panels, domestic cultivated lavender flower reproduction scent was higher in favor of lavender essential oil, which has been used in the industry until now. It is also believed that lavender fragrance, which lowers the content of allergy-causing ingredients, can expand industrialization.
