  • Rn-222 was used as a natural radioactive isotope tracer to evaluate non-aqueous phase liquid(NAPL) contaminated soil and aquifer. In the case of soil sample, Rn-222 concentration was inversely decreased with diesel concentration in the granite soil sample and it was decreased about 30% at the 13% diesel contaminated soil. For evaluating trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated aquifer, the natural radioisotope Rn-222 was used as naturally occurring partitioning tracer for the approximate localization and semiquantitative assessment of the TCE source zone. Rn-222 was analyzed for the estimation of TCE contamination ranges of the acquifer in the contaminated site at Wonju in Korea.

  • Digital comic images are one of popular contents on the Internet. Usually, they are scanned from comic books by digital scanners. Without post-processing, they may have different sizes, skews and margins other than contents at the boundary. To normalize the size of their contents without the skews and margins is an important step in comic image analysis and application such as content-based comic image retrieval system. In this paper, we propose a method to detect a box frame in comic images by extracting of line segments using the gradient Radon transform. The box frame in comic images is the maximum rectangle which consists of contents without margins. We use the detected box frame to normalize the size of comic images and to make them no skew. In addition, the proposed method is implemented by OpenCL to speed up the detection of the line segments. Experimental results show that our proposed method effectively detects the box frame in comic images.

  • This study was performed to research the characteristic of radionuclides of 80 groundwater monitoring networks in Busan. According to the research, average concentration of Uranium was $4.33\;{\mu}g/L$, maximum concentration of Uranium was $171.55\;{\mu}g/L$ among the 80 sampling sites. One sample exceeded the Proposal standard of drinking water in USA in Uranium ($30\;{\mu}g/L$) and four samples exceeded the recommendatory value of WHO about Uranium ($15\;{\mu}g/L$). Radon and gross-$\alpha$ concentration of all samples were far less than the Proposal standard of drinking water in USA. In this study average concentration of radionuclides in underground water wasn't too high, but needed to control the concentration of them to prevent exposure to the people. And it needs to be taken measures in some sites with high concentration of Uranium by closing the pipe line or etc through more studies.

  • The type of ultrasound transducer used influences the quality of a reconstructed ultrasound image. This study analyzed the effect of transducer type on ultrasound computed tomography (UCT) image quality. The UCT was modeled in an ultrasound simulator by using a 5 cm anatomy model and a ring-shape 5 MHz 128 transducer array, which considered attenuation, refraction, and reflection. Speed-of-sound images were reconstructed by the Radon transform as the UCT image modality. Acoustic impedance images were also reconstructed by the delay-and-sum (DAS) method, which considered the speed of sound information. To determine the optimal combination of transducers in observation, point-source, flat, and focused transducers were tested in combination as trasmitters and receivers; UCT images were constructed from each combination. The combination of point-source/flat transducer as transmitting and receiving devices presented the best reconstructed image quality. In UCT implementation, the combination of a flat transducer for transmitting and a point transducer for receiving permitted acceptable image quality.

  • The camera motion is accompanied with the translation and/or the rotation of objects in frames of a video sequence. An unnecessary rotation of objects declines the quality of the moving pictures and in addition is a primary cause of the viewers' fatigue. In this paper, a novel method for correcting rotated frames in video sequences is presented, where the modified Mojette transform is applied to the motion-compensated area in each frame. The Mojette transform is one of discrete Radon transforms, and is modified for correcting the rotated frames as follows. First, the bin values in the Mojette transform are determined by using pixels on the projection line and the interpolation of pixels adjacent to the line. Second, the bin values are calculated only at some area determined by the motion estimation between current and reference frames. Finally, only one bin at each projection is computed for reducing the amount of the calculation in the Mojette transform. Through the simulation carried out on various test video sequences, it is shown that the proposed scheme has good performance for correcting the rotation of frames in moving pictures.

  • A simple method has been established for determining RaA, RaB and RaC concentrations in airborne dust. This is to evaluate the concentration from measurement of total alpha activities in three selected-time intervals after an air sample is taken from the membrane filter paper (mean pore size: $0.8{\mu}m$). As a preliminary trial, a time-variation of the concentrations has been determined using the single-filter method at the KAERI site (N. Lat. $37^{\circ}38'$ and E. Long $127^{\circ}15'$), Seoul, Korea. It appears that there is a large variation of the concentrations depending on the sampling time. Generally the highest value was observed in the morning that may coincide with the highest density of atmosphere in a day while the lowest value was obtained around fourteen o'clock.

  • Background: This study evaluated the radon contribution rate through an evaluation of the exhalation rate of radon from building materials. Objectives: This study compared and evaluated the computation of the radon contribution rate based on each different exhalation rate in a building. Methods: The six demonstration houses that are the subject of this study are wall structures or Rahmen structures, and include demonstration houses similar to general residential environments and non-finishing houses with some walls exposed. Results: The highest exhalation rate was found at 62.98 Bq/m2 per day from the non-finishing floor, and the second highest exhalation rate was from stone materials at 58.76 Bq/m2 per day. Based on this result, investigating the contribution rate of building materials derived from building materials among indoor radon concentrations, house three was the highest at 81.7%, and house one was confirmed to be 33.96%. Conclusions: It can be judged that the effect of exposed concrete and stone is high, and that it is possible to reduce radon emitted from indoor building structures by controlling the indoor materials.

  • The indoor radon concentration was measured in the lecture room of the university and the radon concentration was converted to the amount related to the radon exposure using the dose conversion convention and compared with the reference levels for the radon concentration control. The effect of indoor radon inhalation was evaluated by estimating the life effective dose and the risk of exposure. To measure the radon concentration, measurements were made with a radon meter and a dedicated analysis Capture Ver. 5.5 program in a university lecture room from January to February 2018. The radon concentration measurement was carried out for 5 consecutive hours for 24 hours after keeping the airtight condition for 12 hours before the measurement. Radon exposure risk was calculated using the radon dose and dose conversion factor. Indoor radon concentration, radon exposure risk, and annual effective dose were found within the 95% confidence interval as the minimum and maximum boundary ranges. The radon concentration in the lecture room was $43.1-79.1Bq/m^3$, and the maximum boundary range within the 95% confidence interval was $77.7Bq/m^3$. The annual effective dose was estimated to be 0.20-0.36 mSv/y (mean 0.28 mSv/y). The life-time effective dose was estimated to be 0.66-1.18 mSv (mean $0.93{\pm}0.08mSv$). Life effective doses were estimated to be 0.88-0.99 mSv and radon exposure risk was estimated to be 12.4 out of 10.9 per 100,000. Radon concentration was measured, dose effective dose was evaluated using dose conversion convention, and degree of health hazard by indoor radon exposure was evaluated by predicting radon exposure risk using nominal hazard coefficient. It was concluded that indoor living environment could be applied to other specific exposure situations.

  • This paper presents a new fast algorithm, rotation-based method (RBM), for the reconstruction of 3 dimensional image for cone beam computerized tomography (CB CT) system. The system used cone beam has less exposure time of radioactivity than fan beam. The Three-Pass Shear Matrices (TPSM) is applied, that has less transcendental functions than the one-pass shear method to decrease a time of calculations in the computer. To evaluate the quality of the 3-D images and the time for the reconstruction of the 3-D images, another 3-D images were reconstructed by the radon transform under the same condition. For the quality of the 3-D images, the images by radon transform was shown little good quality than REM. But for the time for the reconstruction of the 3-D images REM algorithm was 35 times faster than radon transform. This algorithm offered $4{\sim}5$ frames a second. It meant that it will be possible to reconstruct the 3-D dynamic images in real time.
