Hanging sleepers are frequently observed in the ballasted track with the rail of high rigidity. These hanging sleepers at the high speed line could cause such large dynamic force compared to those at the conventional line. This dynamic force would, in turn, deteriorate train running stability as well as riding comfort, and accelerate irregularity of track and failure of track materials, leading to a sharp increase in track maintenance cost. When the wheel-rail contact spring exhibits nonlinear behavior and some components of the system like hanging sleeper exhibit bi-linear behaviors, an effective analytical method is proposed for train-track interactions. The verification of the present method is carried out comparing numerical results by the present method and those by Ono's method of RTRI.
In 1st Phase Kyeong-Bu High-Speed Line, to lessen the impact in the transition zone between concrete slab track(in tunnel) and ballasted track(on embankment), the ballast bonding method has been adopted. However, in this area, in the beginning of the operation, unsupported sleepers are found, and the track deterioration and damage of concrete sleepers have occurred. In this paper, the status and causes of unsupported sleepers are discussed and several repair measures are proposed.

Floating sleepers in a ballasted track increase both track deterioration and track irregularities. Consequently, a considerable maintenance work is required and maintenance cycle is shortened due to the floating sleepers. This paper quantifies the degrees of void between the floating sleepers and a ballast bed. In the future, the influence of floating sleepers on the track will be investigated by an analytical method using a dynamic model.

The urban railway sleeper floating track(STEDEF) is a structure that structurally separates the sleepers and the concrete bed using sleeper boots and resilience pads to reduce vibration transmitted to the concrete bed. Recently, the resilience pads of sleeper floating tracks that have been in use for more than 20 years are deteriorating. Accordingly, in order to evaluate the performance of the resilience pad, a static spring stiffness test is being performed after extracting the resilience pad. This evaluation technique is performed after replacing the resilience pad in use. However, the track natural frequency can change depending on the resilience pad spring stiffness and the uplift and subsidence of the concrete bed. In this study, modal testing technique was used to evaluate the track natural frequency. For this purpose, the sleeper boots material, resilience pad spring stiffness, and track natural frequency according to concrete bed uplift and subsidence were measured using modal tests at a laboratory scale. It was analyzed that the natural frequency of the sleeper floating track was directly affected by changes in the spring stiffness of the resilience pad. In addition, the change in natural frequency due to the uplift and subsidence of the concrete bed was also found to be large. Therefore, it is believed that the modal test technique presented in this study can be used to evaluate the resilience pad deterioration and voided sleepers.

Hanging sleepers, which are not fully supported between the sleepers and the ballast, could cause large dynamic forces especially on high speed ballasted track. The dynamic forces resulting from insufficient supporting forces may badly affect the running stability and safety of train. These also accelerate track irregularities and deteriorate track components rapidly. Consequently, the hanging sleepers will lead to sharp increases in track maintenance cost. This paper introduces a rapid and easy method to detect hanging sleepers with portable light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD) and summarizes the results of experiments performed at the high speed ballasted track.
