  • The aim of this investigation was study on the non-evaporation diesel spray characteristics injected through a common-rail diesel injector under various ambient pressure. The diesel spray was investigated with observation of macroscopic characteristics such as spray tip penetration and spray cone angle by the shadowgraph and the image processing method. The numerical study was conducted using a computational fluid dynamics code, AVL-FIRE. The breakup models used were WAVE model and standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was applied. The numerical study used input data which spray cone angle and fuel injection rate was achieved by Zeuch's method. Comparison with experimental result such as spray tip penetration was good agreement. Distribution of droplet diameter were conducted on four planes where the axial distances were 5, 15, 39 and 49mm respectively downstream from the orifice exit.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the spray-atomization and combustion-emission characteristics of biodiesel-DME blended fuel. In this study, two types of test fuels pure biodiesel (BD100) and blended fuel (B-DME20) were used, and the spray and combustion characteristics of different fuel compositions were analyzed. DME constitutes 20% and biodiesel constitutes 80% (by mass fraction) of the blended fuel. The overall spray characteristics, spray tip penetration, and cone angle were evaluated using frozen spray images. In addition, the combustion and emission characteristics were analyzed on the basis of the evaluated data for a single-cylinder CI engine with common-rail injection system. It was revealed that the injection profiles of both the test fuels for a given injection pressure showed similar trends. However, the injection profiles of the blended fuel (B-DME20) indicated shorter ignition delay than those of biodiesel.

  • Behaviour of ultra-high pressure diesel spray and its structure in a constant-volume pressure chamber were studied with injection pressure ranging from 35 to 110MPa. Sprays were observed by using the back illumination scattering method and righ angle scattering method. The spray process mechanism were investigated with both photographs. As a result, the spray angle and air entrainment angle was larger as injection pressure and back pressure increase. It becomes clear that mean air-fuel ratio is increased by increasing the injection pressure.

  • A number of droplet breakup models have been developed to predict the diesel spray. The capabilities of droplet deformation and breakup models such as TAB, ETAB, DDB and APTAB models are evaluated in modeling the non-evaporating diesel sprays injected into atmosphere. New methods are also suggested that take into account the non- spherical shape of droplets and the reduced drag force by the presence of neighbouring droplets. The KIVA calculations with standard ETAB, DDB, and APTAB models predict well the spray tip penetrations of the experiment, but overestimate the Sauter mean Diameter(SMD) of droplets. The calculation with non spherical droplets injected from the nozzle shows very similar results to the calculation with spherical droplets. The drag coefficient which is linearly increased with the time after start of injection during the breakup time gives the smaller SMD that agrees well with the experimental result.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of biodiesel blending on spray and combustion characteristics. In order to this, blended fuels containing 0, 5, 20, 50, 100% biodiesel in weight fraction was injected via common rail to constant volume combustion chamber. As a result, spray cone angle decreased and the Sauter mean diameter increased because of the higher dynamic viscosity and density of biodiesel, however, it does not seemed that spray penetration was affected by these factors considerably. In the combustion experiment, ignition delay of biodiesel was shorter than that of diesel due to higher cetane number. And the peak value of heat release rate increased and the end of combustion was advanced owing to higher combustion efficiency cause by the characteristic of oxygenated fuel.

  • Experimental investigation of unsteady impinging diesel spray on the flat plate have been carried out using high speed camera and Malvern system. The density ratios of ambient gas to diesel fuel were varied using $N_2$ and Ar gas in the case of 14.9, 21.2, 28.4, 35.1, 40.4, and 50.1. With the increase of gas density ratio, the radial penetration is decreased due to the resistance of the ambient gas. With the increase of the gas density ratio and the distance between nozzle tip and flat plate, the height of spray is increased due to the entrance and circulation. With the increase of gas density ratio, SMD is decreased on the nearby position at the center of flat plate, but SMD is increased on the far position. As the distance between nozzle tip and flat plate is increased, SMD is always decreased.

  • The behavior of the 2-stage spray was studied by using the schlieren method with the high pressure common-rail injection system. The spray injected 2 times with the interval of $0.3ms{\sim}1.5ms$ between the 1st and the 2nd spray in a modeled combustion chamber of constant volume bomb. In this case, the quantity of injected fuel of 1st and 2nd also changed. The schlieren photograph shows that the 2nd spray goes further away than the 1st spray when the quantity of the 1st spray is less than that of the 2nd spray. The dispersion of the vapour to the combustion chamber is not affect in a 10% of 1st spray quantity. When the 1st spray quantity is more than the 2nd spray, the vapour scattering of spray is good.

  • The using of diesel engine will be increased in the world for fuel economy. But diesel engine emits harmful emissions such as much NOx, smoke etc. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the spray characteristics of diesel spray in a common-rail system according to fuel temperature, injection pressure, injection period and fuel viscosity etc. using a high speed video camera. Diesel oil has different spray patten due to injection pressure and injection period in a common-rail system. A Filter pressure was influenced by fuel temperature which was turned to fuel viscosity related to a fluid flowing. The effect of the bio-diesel fuel mixing ratio on the spray and atomization characteristics was also investigated at various experimental conditions. It shows that the droplet atomization characteristics of bio-diesel fuel showed deteriorated results as the mixing ratio of biodiesel increased because of the high viscosity.

  • The study on the penetration of sprays during the initial phase of injection period, i.e. ignition delay period, in high speed small D.I. diesel engines are strongly affected by such behavior. To investigate the penetration of the sprays injected through single cylinderical orifice, a mathematical model was developed and compared with experimental results. In this model, radial heterogeneity of fuel density in the spray, transiency of injection pressure difference, and spray outrunning phenomenon were considered simultaneously. Experiments on the behaviors of sprays in the high pressure air chamber were conducted at various injection pressure differences and different levels of back air pressure. The behaviors of sprays injected into the chamber through the conventional Bosch injection pump were visualized with side stroboscopic illumination. Comparison of the experimental results with predictions from the mathematical model confirmed the validity of the model. It was also found that during the initial phase of the injection period the penetration of sprays vs. time appeared to have two transition points; one corresponded to disintegration point of liquid fuel jet, the other to the beginning of steady state injection.

  • Behaviour of ultra-high pressure diesel spray in a constant-volume pressure chamber was studied with injection pressure ranging from 20 to 160㎫. Sprays were observed by the right angle scattering method. As a result, the spray tip penetration is first proportional to a time, and after that, it is proportional to 0.52 of the time during at the time of injection pressure and back pressure increase. An empirical correlation was made for the parameters of injection pressure, air-fuel density ratio, spray tip distance, spray angle, jet angle of spray and max. spray width.
