  • The adequate design of a passenger car's braking system, which is directly related to the safety of a car, is very important since the safety is an essential design parameter of a car to keep men and car from the damage. The general method to verify the performance and safety of a braking system is still based on the trial-error experiments. However, the design based on experiments costs high and is time-consuming method. So it is desirable to use the numerical analysis method for the reduction of cost and time in the design of a braking system. In this paper, the thermal characteristic of a ventilated disc brake has been analyzed as a function of the car speed and a deceleration during quick braking.

  • The present study describes an experimental investigation of temperature fluctuations associated with thermal instability. Surface temperatures of brake disk and pad were monitered at various locations in a caliper type brake system during drag braking conditions. It was found that the thermal instability appeared in pad more seriously than in disk. The temperatures at various circumferential positions fluctuate synchronously, whereas the center temperature fluctuates with 180$^{\circ}$ phase difference from the outer and inner radius temperatures. The temperature and amplitude of the temperature perturbations are increased due to the increase of contact area in the center location. It was also found that the thermal instability was dominantly determined by the increase of rotation speed and pressure. And the modification of ventilation path could retard the onset of thermal instability.

  • The thermal deformation volume of motorcycle break disk was studied using a disk-on-pad type friction tester. Thermal deformation volume of motorcycle break disk have an effect on the frictional factor such as applied load, sliding speed, sliding distance and number of ventilated disk hole. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors on thermal deformation volume. In this study, the thermal deformation volume with ANSYS workbench are obtained by application of temperature from mechanical test. From this study, the result was shown that the motorcycle break disk with ventilated hole 3 have the most excellent thermal deformation characteristics. The regression equation with frictional factors which have a trust rate of 95% for prediction of thermal deformation volume of motorcycle break disk was composed.

  • The effect of manufacturing parameters on friction characteristics of motorcycle break system was studied using a disk-on-pad type friction tester. Such parameters conditions have an effect on the frictional factor such as number of ventilated disk hole, applied load, sliding speed, and sliding distance. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors. In this study, the friction characteristics using design of experiment containing 4 elements were investigated for an optimal condition for the best motorcycle break system employing regression analysis method. From this study, the result was shown that the applied load in frictional factors was the most important, next to sliding speed, number of ventilated disk hole.

  • In this study, the analysis technique, which can estimate the temperature rise and thermal deformation of the ventilated disc considering the vehicle information, braking condition and properties of the disc and pad, is developed. The analytical process of the braking power generation during braking is mathematically derived. The thermal energy, which is applied to the surface of a disc as heat flux, is calculated. Then, the temperature rise and thermal deformation of a disc are estimated using FE software, SAMCEF. Shape of the cross section of the disc is optimized according to the response surface analysis method in order to minimize the temperature rise and thermal deformation. The hot judder analysis is done using the optimized disc, and the analysis results are discussed.

  • This paper deals with friction-induced vibration of disc brake system under constant friction coefficient. A linear, lumped and distributed parameter model to represent the floating caliper disc brake system is proposed. The complex eigenvalues are used to investigate the dynamic stability and in order to verify simulations which are based on the theoretical model, the experimental modal test and the dynamometer test are performed. The comparison of experimental and theoretical results shows a good agreement and the analysis indicates that mode coupling due to friction force is responsible for disc brake squeal. And squeal type instability is investigated by using the parametric analysis. This indicates parameters which have influence on the propensity of brake squeal. This helped to validate the analysis model and establish confidence in the analysis results. Also they may be useful during system development or diagnostic analysis.

  • This paper presents the thermal behaviours of a solid type disk brake for a high-speed train. The thermal behaviours of a brake disk with 50mm thickness shows good performance compared with 45mm thickness of a disk because of a high specific heat capacity and thermal expansion ratio. The FEM results show that the thickness of the d!sk with a same weight of the brake disk should be increased for a good flexibility of the contact thermal problems. Therefore, the ratio between the pad and disk in diameter may be reduced and the thickness of a disk increased.

  • This describes thermal crack creation process in automotive disks. Thermal cracks have been serious defects which induced disastrous accidents during traveling. The thermal cracks must be regularly eye-inspected. The cracks have been experimentally analysed; but they were not reported by analytic means yet. This paper proposed thermal crack creation process by a computer simulation which enlightened how to investigate thermal crack by cheap means. We explained the disk thermal crack creation and calculated stress intensity factor of an assumed surface crack in an automotive disk.

  • In order to investigate the mechanism of brake squeal noise, the sound and vibration of an actua1 brake system were measured using a brake dynamometer. The experimental results show that disc run-out varies with brake line pressure and the factor of squeal generation is the run-out due to the misalignment of brake disk. A three degrees of freedom friction model is developed for the disk brake system where the run-out effect and nonlinear friction characteristic are considered. The results of numerical analysis of the model agree well with the experimental results. Also, the stability analysis of the model was performed to predict the generation of brake squeal due to the design parameter modification of brake systems. The results show that the squeal generation depends on the nm-out rather than the friction characteristic between the pad and the disk of brake.
