As contemporary thesauri have become large and complex, it is increasingly difficult to assess the intended meaning of each one of the terms. Thereby the meaning of many descriptors seems to be very similar, and it is often not possible to distinguish among them and to identify the term correctly. Purpose of this article is to induce definitions of descriptors in thesaurus by specifying the characteristics of each concept, locating it in the domain and providing clear and prescriptive information on the meaning of each descriptor in the form of a standardized terminological definition. In this study, a small prototype thesaurus using definition of term in the field of information industry in Korean Standards has been developed. In this thesaurus definitions are written for each descriptor with the help of a proposed defining model and in accordance with defining rules borrowed from the field of terminology. In addition, elements of analyzed definition have been included in the relation structure of descriptors. It is revealed that terminological definition added to thesaurus may permit extraction of separate items of information from definitions for the representation of knowledge structures and makes it easier to confine the scope of descriptors to be included in thesaurus in a given subject field.

In this study, the experiment was made to transform the relationship among terms in a thesaurus to ontology language as search tools for multilingual text. As a result, the equivalent relationship in the thesaurus can be expressed by different ways in the ontology, such as equivalentClass, equivalentProperty, sameAS, and so on. On the other hand, the associative relationship can be represented by ObjectProperty, DatatypeProperty, and inverseOf. For this test, first of all, the descriptors assigned by AAT and the descriptors from bilingual thesaurus by ICCD were translated into Korean. Then, the facet was used for conceptual equivalence among terms from different languages. The result of the study showed that using rdf:Property in ontology was the most effective way of transforming multilingual thesaurus into ontology.

The terminology management is absolutely necessary for maintaining the efficiency of thesaurus. This is because the creating, differentiating, disappearing, and other processes of the descriptor become accomplished dynamically, making effective management of thesaurus a very difficult task. Therefore, a device is required for accomplishing methods to construct and maintain the thesaurus. This study proposes the methods to construct the thesaurus management using the basic elements of a topic map which are topic, occurrence, and association. Second, the study proposes the methods to represent the basic and specific instances using the systematic mapping algorithm and merging algorithm. Also, using a hub document as a standard, this study gives the methods to expand and subsitute the descriptors using the topic type. The new method applying fixed concept for double layer management on terms is developed, too. The purpose of this method is to fix the conceptual term which represents independent concept of time and space, and to select the descriptor freely by external information circumstance.
