Human Visual System-Aware and Low-Power Histogram Specification and Its Automation for TFT-LCDs (TFT-LCD를 위한 인간 시각 만족의 저전력 히스토그램 명세화 기법 및 자동화 연구)

  • Backlight has a major factor in power consumption of TFT-LCDs which are most popular in portable devices. There have been a lot of attempts to achieve power savings by backlight dimming. At the same time, the researches have shown image compensation due to decreased brightness of a displayed image. However, existing image compensation methods such as histogram equalization have some limits in completely satisfying the human visual system (HVS)-awareness. This paper proposes an enhanced dimming technique to obtain both power saving and HVS-awareness by combining pixel compensation and histogram specification for TFT-LCDs. This method executes a search algorithm and an automation algorithm employing simplified calculations for fast image processing. Experimental results showed that the proposed method achieved significant improvement in visual satisfaction per power saving over existing backlight dimming.

Novel LCD CCFL-backlight Electronic Ballast using the Phase-shift Full-bridge Inverter (위상천이 풀브리지 인버터를 이용한 새로운 LCD CCFL 백라이트 전자식 안정기)

  • This paper proposes a novel LCD CCFL-backlight electronic ballast using the phase-shift full-bridge inverter. The proposed electronic ballast reduces the ignition voltage and eliminates current spikes using the new digital dimming control applied with soft-starting. Thus the electronic ballast improves ignition behavior of the CCFL and hence increases the CCFL's life span. For this, this paper analyzes the full-bridge inverter topology of the proposed electronic ballast and explains the new digital dimming control algorithm applied to the ballast, briefly. And this paper shows a design example of the prototype circuit and explains an implementation method of the digital dimming control which is implemented on a single-chip microcontroller with software. This was implemented as actual prototype electronic ballast, and its experimental results showed that the proposed electronic ballast operates correctly. The ignition voltage of the prototype in the digital dimming operation was reduced about 30[%] compared with the conventional electronic ballast and there were not any current spikes.

  • In this thesis, we introduce and investigate new architectures and comprehensive design methodologies of intelligent dimming converter and evaluate the proposed model and the system through a series of numeric experiments. Electronic ballast enable prolongation of life foy Fluorescent-Lamp and ballast. However, There are no merit in case that user impossible manual control. Therefore in this paper, we put emphasis on the design of electronic ballast based on intelligent dimming converter and the energy saving according to the day-light and the user settings by applying the intelligent model to a fluorescent lamp. Also, we show the superiority of the proposed Intelligent dimming converter through the evaluation of performance with conventional electronic ballast by applying the intelligent model to hardware of systems.

  • This paper presents an impact of flicker for various binary modulations of visible light communication (VLC) under dimming requirement. While previous approaches consider the statistics of the signal that cannot capture contributions of dynamic impacts of flicker, the power spectral density is evaluated for various VLC transmission schemes of dimming support. This enables to compare transmission schemes with the contribution of low and intermediate frequency components to flicker. Numerical results show that analog dimming has advantages over other techniques in terms of flicker and signal processing with waveforms and symbol distribution allows to mitigate flicker effects.

Development of constant current SMPS for LED Lighting (LED 조명용 정전류 SMPS 개발)

  • In this study, the constant current converter for LED lighting was designed and the electrical characteristics of the fabricated SMPS was measured. When the output current is 300mA the maximum efficiency of 85% was shown and the output current is in the range of 100~400mA efficiency over 70% were exhibited. Also the dimming levels control over the range of 0 to 100% was possible by using a control signal of 0~250mV.

  • 기존의 형광 램프용 전자식 안정기는 램프와 안정기의 수명 연장을 가져다주었다. 형광 램프용 전자식 안정기는 기존의 60Hz로 형광등을 점등하는 자기식 안정기에 비해 향상된 점등과 에너지를 절약 측면에서 큰 장점을 보이고 있다. 형광 램프의 조광방식으로 크게 3가지 방식으로 나뉘는데 위상제어를 이용한 방식, PWM(Pulse Width Modulation)방식, 저전압 제어방식이 있다. 본 논문은 기존의 사용 방법과는 달리 안정기 내부의 인버터 공진 특성을 이용하여 주파수를 변환시켜 형광 램프를 디밍하였다.

  • 가로등은 공공 부문 전력 사용량 중 절대적인 비중을 차지하지만 불필요한 전력 소모로 인한 낭비요인이 적지 않았다. 통상적으로 가로등은 조금만 어두워도 안전사고 우려가 높아 법적 기준보다 10~20% 정도 밝게 설계되고 있는 실정이다. 그래서 도로조명의 가로등은 에너지절약을 위하여 격등방식으로 사용하고 있으나 등주사이의 조도분포가 균일하지 않아, 조도가 낮은 곳에서 운전자가 불안감을 느끼고 피로가 증가하여 사고로 이어지며, 조도조절이 불가능해 차량 이동이 적은 새벽 시간까지 밝게 유지해야 하는 비효율이 발생, 불필요한 전력소모로 이어지는 등의 문제점에 대해서 본 고에서는 가로등에 디밍제어 시스템을 구현하여 안정적인 조도 유지하고 에너지 절감효과를 증가시킬 수 있는 방안에 대해 고찰하고자 한다.
