In this study, nonlinear static aeroelastic analysis system for a high-aspect-ratio wing are developed using the transonic small disturbance (TSD) and large deflection beam theory and validated. For the coupling between fluid and structure, the transformation of displacement from the structural mesh to aerodynamic one is performed by the shape function of the beam finite element and the inverse transformation of force by work equivalent load concept. Also, for the static aeroelastic analysis of the wing the use of TSD aerodynamics are justified. The validation of the system includes one of the efficient transformation methods of force and displacement.

Many experimental data of fatigue crack propagation show that the fatigue crack propagation process is stochastic. Therefore, the study on the crack propagation must be based on the probabilistic approach. In the present paper, fatigue crack propagation process is assumed to be a discrete Markov process and the method is developed, which can evaluate the reliability of the structural component by using Markov chain model(Unit step B-model) suggested by Bogdanoff. In this method, leak failure, plastic collapse and brittle fracture of the critical component are taken as failure modes, and the effects of initial crack distribution, periodic and non-periodic inspection on the probability of failure are considered. In this method, an equivalent load value for random loading such as wave load is used to facilitate the analysis. Finally some calculations are carried out in order to show the usefulness and the applicability of this method. And then some remarks on this method are mentioned.

The purpose of the present study is to propose a realistic method to analyze the prestressed concrete members subjected to long term torsional loading. The present study devises a method to realistically take into account the tensile stiffness of concrete after cracking. The effects of biaxial compressive and tensile loadings on the compressive and tensile strengths of concrete are also taken into account in the present model. The salient feature of the present study lies in the fact that the cracking, creep, and shrinkage behavior of concrete and the relaxation of steel have been realistically considered. The comparison of the present theory with experimental data indicates that the proposed model dipicts reasonably well the actual behavior of prestressed concrete members under long-term torsional loadings.

The aim of the present study is to derive an empirical formula relating the absorbed energy and the cutting length for longitudinally stiffened steel palates which are cut by a wedge, idealizing the ship bottom stiffened platings in groundings. This study is based on the test results and the investigations of some parameters affecting the cutting response, described in Part I. By dimensionless ana1ysis of the test results obtained in a quasi-static loading condition, the energy absorbed while a longitudinally stiffened plate is cut by a wedge is expressed as functions of the cutting length, the yield stress, the equivalent plate thickness and the wedge angle. Also, the dynamic effects are incorporated into the static formula such that the proposed formula can be applied to the impact loading situations. The validity of the proposed formula is checked by comparing with the results obtained by the other existing formulas or by the drop-hammer tests.
This paper presents the results of investigation on the behavior of soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls in tiered arrangement using the finite element method of analysis. 2D finite element analyses were performed on tiered walls with two levels of offset distance. Cases with equivalent surcharge as suggested by the NCMA design guideline were additionally analyzed in an attempt to confirm the appropriateness of the equivalent surcharge model adopted by NCMA. Deformation characteristics of a tiered wall with small offset distance suggest a compound mode of failure and support current design approaches requiring a global slope stability analysis for design. Also revealed is that the interaction between the upper and lower walls significantly affects not only the performance of the lower wall but also the upper wall, suggesting that the upper walls should also be designed with due consideration of the interaction.

It has been recognized that the damage control must become a more explicit design consideration. In an effort to develop design methods based on performance it is clear that the evaluation of the nonlinear response is required. The methods available to the design engineer today are nonlinear time history analyses, monotonic static nonlinear analyses, or equivalent static analyses with simulated nonlinear influences. Some building codes propose the capacity spectrum method based on the nonlinear static analysis(pushover analysis) to determine the earthquake-induced demand given by the structure pushover curve. These procedures are conceptually simple but iterative and time consuming with some errors. This paper presents a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural initial elastic period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for MDF(multi degree of freedom) systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the accuracy and confidence of this method from a point of view of various earthquakes and unloading stiffness degradation parameters. The conclusions of this study are as follows; 1) NDSM is considered as practical method because the peak deformations of nonlinear system of MDF by NDSM are almost equal to the results of nonlinear time history analysis(NTHA) for various ground motions. 2) When the results of NDSM are compared with those of NTHA. mean of errors is the smallest in case of post-yielding stiffness factor 0.1, static force by MAD(modal adaptive distribution) and unloading stiffness degradation factor 0.2~0.3.

This paper alined at the development of a lateral drift control method that is able to quantitatively control the lateral drift of global node. For this, we applied an efficient partial reanalysis algorithm. By using this algorithm, we could recalculate the displacement and member force of the specific node without reanalyzing the entire structure when member stiffness changes partially. The theoretical concepts of the algorithm are so simple that it is not necessary to solve the complicate differential equation or to repeat the analysis of entire structure. The proposed method calculates the drift contribution of each member for the global displacement according to the variation of section sizes by using the algorithm. Then by changing the member sizes as the order of drift contribution, we could control the lateral drift of global node with a minimum quantity of materials. 20 story braced frame structure system is presented to illustrate the usefulness of proposed method. It is shown that the proposed method is very effective in lateral drift control and the results obtained by proposed method are consistent with those of commercial analysis program.
Laboratory dynamic tests are carried out to assess the liquefaction potential of saturated sands in most countries. However, simple results such as the maximum cyclic shear stress and the number of cycles at initial liquefaction are used in the experimental assessment of liquefaction potential, even though various results can be obtained from the dynamic test. In addition, it seemed to be inefficient because more than three dynamic tests with different stress ratio have to be carried out to draw a liquefaction resistance experimental curve. To improve the present assessment method fur liquefaction potential, a new critical resistible characteristic far soil liquefaction is proposed and verified through conventional cyclic triaxial tests with Jumunjin sand. In the proposed method, various experimental data such as effective stress path, stress-strain relationship, and the change of excess pore water pressure can be used in the determination of cumulative plastic shear strains at every 1/4 cycle. Especially, the critical cumulative plastic shear strain to initiate liquefaction can be defined in a specific point called a phase change point in the effective stress path and it can be calculated from a hysteric curve of stress-strain relationship up to this point. Through this research, it is found that the proposed cumulative plastic shear strain can express the dissipated energy to resist dynamic loads and consider the realistic soil dynamic behavior of saturated sands reasonably. It is also found that the critical plastic shear strain can be used as a registible index of soils to represent the critical soil dynamic state, because it seems to include no effect of large deformation.
Concrete has excellent mechanical properties, high durability, and economical advantages over other construction materials. Nevertheless, it is not an easy task to apply concrete to long span bridges. That's because concrete has a low strength to weight ratio. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has a very high strength and hence it allows use of relatively small section for the same design load. Thus UHPC is a promising material to be utilized in the construction of long span bridges. However, there is a possibility of crack generation during the curing process due to the high binder ratio of UHPC and a consequent large amount of hydration heat. In this study, adiabatic temperature rise and mechanical properties were modeled for the stress analysis due to hydration heat. Adiabatic temperature rise curve of UHPC was modeled superposing 2-parameter model and S-shaped function, and the Arrhenius constant was determined using the concept of equivalent time. The results are verified by the mock-up test measuring the temperature development due to the hydration of UHPC. In addition, models for mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, tensile strength and compressive strength were developed based on the test results from conventional load test and ultrasonic pulse velocity measurement.

Three small scale hollow circular reinforced concrete columns with aspect ratio 4.5 were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Diameter of section is 400 mm, hollow diameter is 200 mm. The selected test variable is transverse steel ratio. Volumetric ratios of spirals of all the columns are 0.302~0.604% in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to 45.9~91.8% of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by seismic concept. The longitudinal steel ratio is 2.017%. The axial load ratio is 7%. This paper describes mainly crack behavior, load-displacement hysteresis loop, seismic performance such as equivalent damping ratio, residual displacement and effective stiffness and flexural over-strength of circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with respect to test variable. The regulation of flexural over-strength is adopted by Korea Bridge Design Specifications (Limited state design, 2012). The test results are compared with nominal strength, result of nonlinear moment-curvature analysis and the design specifications such as AASHTO LRFD and Korea Bridge Design Specifications(Limited state design).
