  • The purpose of thesis is to analyze the radiation characteristics of the parabola reflector antenna. The equivalent sources are used to compute the radiation fields in the far-zone utilizing the aperture integration. Using these results, we obtain the efficiency parameters associated with reflector : aperture efficiency, spillover efficiency, as the function of F/D, diameter beam squint angle and misarrangement.

  • In this paper, we describe a process for optimally designing a ring-type permanent magnet thrust bearing. The bearing consists of two sets of permanent magnet rings. One set is located inside the other set. An axial offset between the two sets creates axial force, which results in a thrust bearing function. In order to realize an optimal design of the bearing where the required load capacity of the bearing is achieved with the least magnet volume, we derived analytical design equations by adopting the equivalent current sheet (ECS) method. We considered the following two types of magnet arrays: axial arrays and Halbach arrays. These two types of arrays are optimized using the analytical design equations. The results of the optimization are verified using three dimensional (3D) finite element analyses (FEA). The results show that the Halbach array can achieve the required load capacity with less amount of permanent magnet than the axial array does. The efficacy of the ECS method is also verified by using 3D FEA. It is found that the accuracy of ECS method is more sensitive to the underlying assumptions for the Halbach array than for the axial array.

  • In order to use a linear vibration motor for the actuator of a haptic interface, the motor must provide a higher reaction rate and longer service life than typical rotational motors with an eccentric mass. In this paper, we propose a linear vibration motor that is equipped with a voice-coil actuator and permanent-magnet springs. To concentrate the magnetic flux in the actuator, a Halbach-style magnetization pattern is used. Permanent-magnet springs replace mechanical springs to help increase the service life. We use the method of equivalent current sheets and the method of images to analyze and model the proposed vibration motor. These methods are validated using finite element analyses and experiments. A prototype motor is designed and fabricated. Tests with the prototype show the feasibility of the proposed linear vibration motor.

  • The analysis of a surface wave antenna with the corrugated ground plane fed by a parallel-plate waveguide is considered. An equivalent theorem Is employed to subdivide the original problem into three regions for the simple analysis : one concerning the geometry inside the shorted parallel-plate(Internal region 1), one concerning the geometry of the corrugation(Internal region 2), and one concerning the geometry of the conducting wedge(External region). The hybrid method of moment(MOM)/uniform geometrical theory of diffraction(UTD) method is applied to analyze a corrugated surface wave antenna with the end-fire radiation. Our numerical results are very well matched with those of the previous experiment, better results are obtained when compared with those of the previous simple equivalent current approach. Also, we can obtain the parameters to design an effective end-fire corrugated surface wave antenna.

  • In this paper, miniature voltage-controlled oscillator(VCO) for 1.6 ㎓ PCS band is designed and implemented using the LTCC technique. Circuit level design using commercial components is performed, and passive L, C elements embedded in LTCC substrate is optimized by simulation tools. Embedded passive components are modeled into equivalent circuits and their circuit parameters are extracted for circuit simulation. Utilizing the designed embedded passive elements and 21 layers LTCC substrate, VCO with 4.0${\times}$4.0${\times}$1.6 ㎣ dimensions is designed and fabricated. Developed VCO operates in 2.7 V with 8.5 ㎃ current consumption. The phase noise performance of VCO is below -112.61 ㏈c/㎐ at 100 ㎑ offset and harmonic suppression characteristics is measured above -30 ㏈.
