  • The purpose of this study is to obtain the experimental data of the forced flow dryout heat flux in a heat generating debris bed which simulates the degraded nuclear reactor core after severe accident. An experimental investigation has been conducted of dryout heat flux in an inductively heated bed of steel particles with upward forced flow rising coolant circulation system under atmospheric pressure. The present observations were mainly focused on the effects of coolant mass flux, particle size, bed height, and coolant subcooling on the dryout heat flux The data were obtained when carbon steel particles in the size distribution 1.5, 2.5, 3.0 and 4.0 mm were placed in a 55 mm ID Pyrex glass column and inductively heated by passing radio frequency current through a multiturn work coil encircling the column. Distilled water was supplied with variation of mass flux from 0 to 3.5 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ s as a coolant in the tests, while the bed height was selected as 55 mm and 110 mm. Inlet temperature of coolant varied by 2$0^{\circ}C$ and 8$0^{\circ}C$. The principal results of the tests are: (1) Dryout heat flux increases with increase of upward forcing mass flux and particle size; (2) The dryout heat flux at the zero mass flux obviously depends on the Particle size as Previous studies; (3) The forced flow dryout heat flux in the shallow bed is somewhat higher than that in the deep bed,

  • The purpose of this work is to obtain the experimental data for the forced How dryout heat flux in a heat generating stratified debris bed which simulates the degraded nuclear reactor core after severe accident. The present observations were mainly focused on the effect of coolant mass flux on the dryout heat flux in the stratified debris bed which consists of several layers with selected particle sizes under constant bed depth and temperature of inlet coolant flow conditions. The following results were obtained from this experimental work: (1) The dryout heat flux in the stratified debris bed increases with increase of upward forcing mass flux of coolant. The similar trend of increase rate of dryout heat flux in the stratified bed was observed in the uniform particle size bed. (2) For the comparison of theoretical values and experimental data, the use of surface area mean diameter as a particle diameter was suitable for the calculation of dryout heat flux.

  • The initial conditions such as the film thickness and the void fraction at the onset of annular flow are required for the analytical dryout model. The Disturbance Wave Instability model(DWI model) is one of the model describing the Annular-to-Intermittent Flow regime Transition(AIFT). The experimental CHF conditions for the uniformly heated tube were compared with the predictions by the modified Levy model, for which the initial conditions at AIFT were estimated by the DWI model. For the flow through long tubes with small inlet subcooling, the effect of AIFT model on the dryout prediction was little. However, the use of DWI model gave better prediction of CHF in a short tube.

  • Boiling heat transfer characteristics of liquid nitrogen in a stainless steel plain tube and wire coil inserted tubes were investigated. The test tubes, which had an inner diameter of 10.6 m and a length of 1.65 m, were horizontally located. Five wire coils having different pitch and thickness were inserted into the plain tube. The pitches of the wire coils were 18.4, 27.6, and 36.8 m, and the thickness was 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mm respectively. Tests were conducted at a saturation temperature of $-191^{\circ}$, mass fluxes from 58 to 105 kg/$m^2s$, and heat fluxes from 22.5 to 32.7 kw/$m^2$. A direct heating method was used to apply heat to the test section. The boiling heat transfer coefficients of liquid nitrogen were represented as a function of vapor quality, which showed significant drop at the dryout vapor quality. The maximum heat transfer enhancement using the wire coil inserted tubes over the plain tube was $174\%$ for 'Wire 3' having a thickness of 2.5 mm and a pitch of 18.4 mm.

  • An experiment was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the evaporation heat transfer for refrigerant R-134a flowing in a plate and shell heat exchanger. The data are useful in designing more compact and effective evaporators for various refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Two vertical counterflow channels were formed in the exchanger. The R-134a flows up in one channel exchanging heat with the hot water flowing down in the other channel. The effects of the average heat flux, mass flux, saturation temperature and vapor quality were examined in detail. The present data show that the evaporation heat transfer coefficient increases with the vapor quality. A rise in the refrigerant mass flux causes an increase in the $h_r$ value. A rise in the average imposed heat flux causes an increase in the $h_r$, value at the low quality. Finally, at a higer refrigerant saturation temperature the $h_r$, value is found to be lower.

  • In this paper, the experimental results on evaporation heat transfer characteristics were reported for a micro-fin tube using $CO_2$. An experimental refrigerant loop had been established to measure the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $CO_2$. Experiments were conducted for mass fluxes, heat fluxes, saturation temperatures and PAG oil concentrations. With increasing the heat flux and the saturation temperature, the evaporation heat transfer coefficient increased. At the higher mass flux, however, the exit vapor quality of the micro-fin tube was to be lower. The peak of the heat transfer coefficient was shifted toward low quality region. The evaporation pressure drop increased as the mass flux increased and the saturation temperature decreased. As PAG oil concentration increased, the evaporation heat transfer coefficient decreased and the dryout was delayed by oil addition.

  • In this study, the heat transport limitations of a two-phase closed thermosyphon were investigated. For the test, a two-phase closed thermosyphon ($L_t/: 600 mm,\;L_e:105mm,\;L_a:75mm,\;L_c:420mm,\;D_o:22.2mm,$ container: copper (inner grooved surface), working fluid: PFC ($C_6F_14$) was fabricated with a reservoir that can change the fill charge ratio. The following was imposed as the factors on the heat transport limitations of a two-phase closed thermosyphon. 1) Fill charge ratio of the working fluid. 2) Tilt angle of the longitudinal axis. From tile experimental data, some results were obtained as follows. When the fill charge ratio was relatively small ($\psi$20%), the heat transport limitation occurred about 100W by dry-out limitation. However over 40%, it shelved nearly constant value (500 W) by flooding limitation. The heat transport limitation according to the tilt angle increased smoothly until the tilt angle was $60^{\circ}$,/TEX>, after then decreased slowly.

  • There is an increasing need to understand the thermal-hydraulic phenomena, including the critical heat flux (CHF), in narrow rectangular channels and consider these in system design. The CHF mechanism under a saturated flow boiling condition involves the depletion of the liquid film of an annular flow. To predict this type of CHF, the previous representative liquid film dryout models (LFD models) were studied, and their shortcomings were reviewed, including the assumption that void fraction or quality is constant at the boundary condition for the onset of annular flow (OAF). A new LFD model was proposed based on the recent constitutive correlations for the droplet deposition rate and entrainment rate. In addition, this LFD model was applied to predict the CHF in vertical narrow rectangular channels that were uniformly heated. The predicted CHF showed good agreement with 284 pieces of experimental data, with a mean absolute error of 18. 1 % and root mean square error of 22.9 %.

  • An experimental study was carried out to delineate the flow characteristics in a closed countescurrent two-phase thermo syphon with concentric tubes. This is to be installed in the HANARO research reactor as a part of a Cold Neutron Source(CNS). In the present investigation, experiments ata room temperature with Freon-II3 as a moderator were performed. Results show that, based on the magnitude of pressure fluctuation, the flow regimes could be divided into 4 distinct ones in the ($V_f,\;Q_i$) plane, where $V_f$ represents the volume of the charged liquid and $Q_i$ the heat load: a stable flow regime, an oscillatory flow regime, a restablized flow regime and a dryout flow regime. For $V_f$>2.5l, the flow is stable at low $Q_i$. However, as $Q_i$ increases, the flow becomes oscillatory and finally restablizes As $V_f$ increases, the oscillation amplitude decreases, reaching to the restablized flow region at low $Q_i$, and the liquid level in the moderator cell remains high. In the oscillatory flow regimes, for a fixed VI; the oscillating period of time varies with $Q_i$, having a minimum value at a certain value of $Q_i$. The heat load, where the oscillating period of time is minimum, decreases as $V_f$ increases.
