Geophysical studies of gas hydrate in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea (동해 울릉분지 가스하이드레이트 지구물리탐사연구)

  • 동해 울릉분지에서 취득된 다중채널 탄성파자료 해석에 의하면 이 지역에는 가스하이드레이트 부존가능성을 지시하는 해저모방반사면, 탄성파침니/칼럼, 음향공백대, 증폭반사면, 가스분출 구조 등을 포함하는 5가지 탄성파 지시자가 존재한다. 가장 대표적인 지시자인 해저모방반사면은 연구지역의 남쪽사면의 경우 연속성이 양호하고 강한 진폭을 갖는 반면, 북쪽 중앙분지에서는 상대적으로 진폭이 약하고 연속성이 불량하다. 반사도 감소 및 속도 풀업 특징을 갖는 탄성파 침니/칼럼구조는 중앙분지와 북동쪽해역에 주로 분포하며 가스하이드레이트 혹은 가스유체의 부존가능성을 시사해준다. 반사강도가 약화되어 나타나는 음향공백대는 저탁류/원양성 퇴적물이 분포하는 중앙분지에 부분적으로 발달하며, 칼럼과 연계된 음향공백대는 북동쪽 사면저부에 주로 분포한다. 해저모방반사면의 하부에 위치하는 증폭반사면은 연구지역의 서쪽 사면에 분포하며 강한 음의 진폭특성으로 보아 자유가스를 함유한 층으로 해석된다. 가스분출구조는 주로 쇄설성 퇴적물이 우세한 조사지역의 남쪽 대륙사면지역에 광범위하게 분포하며 돔구조 혹은 폭마크 등을 수반한다.

Diel Feeding Activity in Summer of Juvenile Pacific Herring, Clupea pallasii in the Southeastern Coast of Korea (여름철 동해 남부에 출현하는 청어(Clupea pallasii) 유어의 일섭식 변동)

  • Diel changes in feeding activity of juvenile Pacific herring, Clupea pallasii were investigated throughout the analysis of stomach contents of 301 fishes collected from the southeastern coast of Korea. Fish samples were collected every 3 hour over a 24 h period in summer using small bottom trawl. The ratio of empty stomach, stomach fullness, stomach contents index (SCI) and stomach fullness index (IF) of juvenile C. pallasii were varied markedly with day/night changes. The ratio of empty stomach tended be higher during nighttime, while the other values were higher at daytime, with showing peak before sunset. During daytime, the stomach contents mainly were made up of copepods and euphausiids, while the diets at midnight were composed of nearly digested and unidentifiable items.

Annual Variation of Salinity in the Neighbouring Seas of Korea (韓國周邊 海洋鹽分의 年變化)

  • We study the annual variation of salinity at the sea surface and at 30m depth in the neighbouring seas of korea by the harmonic method. The analysis based on the monthly salinity data at 182 stations collected regularly by the Fisheries Research and Development Agency during 15 years (1961∼1975). The annual mean salinity in the West Sea is lower than that in the East Sea. In the amplitude of annual salinity variation decreases and the phase delays with the downstream distance of the Tsushima Current. The salinity at 30m has a higher mean, a smaller amplitude and a delayed phase than the corresponding ones at the surface. The annual variations of salinity in the South and East Seas are caused mainly by the annual variations of the local precipitation and that of the fresh water discharge from the Yangtze River.

  • Three lines from $36_{\circ}$ N, $124_{\circ}$ E, and $132_{\circ}$ E of the East Sea and the Yellow Sea were chosen to extract spectra of normalized water leaving radiances. Comparative analysis of the OCTS algorithm and SeaWiFS(OC-2) algorithms was presented here. OCTS algorithm have more overestimate than SeaWiFS(OC-2 algorithm) for detecting chlorophyll concentration. Atmospheric correction algorithm that is excluded the effect of SS in the case 2 water need for long term ocean environmental monitoring of the East Sea and the Yellow Sea. And, considered the effect of CDOM and SS, bio-optical algorithm have to be developed in this research.

  • To measure temporal variability of long- range transmission in northern part of the East Sea of Korea, low frequency acoustic sources were deployed on the continental shelf 0.4km south of Cape Shultz near the port of Vladivostok during October 1999. The transmissions of the phase modulated signals were recorded by VLA moored on the northern slope of Ulleung-do. The measured signals were processed for the acoustic arrivals and their variability in time. The temporal signal processing involves pulse compression of the phase-encoded signal, time spread and temporal coherence processing. Variability of the ocean sound speed field in time scales of short period seems to be dominated by random fluctuations caused by sound speed perturbation due to the vertical displacements associated with internal waves.

  • Four wave gauges of pressure type were installed for about one month(1992. 2~3) for the analysis of wave agitations induced by the intrusion of long-period incident waves inside and outside of Donghae Harbor. Helmholtz natural period and second peak period of seiche in Donghae Harbor are found to be approximately 17.1 and 5.5 minutes from the spectral analysis of measured long-period wave data. Amplification ratio at Helmholtz natural period reaches about 10 which is five times as lagre as that of Youngil Bay, but wave amplitudes ill harbor were about 10 em during the measurement period which are relatively small.

  • A new internal tide model for solving flow fields and wave generations is presented here which seems to be simple to apply, converges fast and yields accurate results. The new method employs a representation of vertical structure using dynamic basis functions which depend on the stratifications. The present method has been applied to the East Sea. For a constant Brunt-Vaisala case, weak baroclinic currents are generated over the entire continertal slop: however, results using a more realistic stratification can be described using only the lowest modes and exhibit much more realistic behavior. Baroclinic tide generation is confined to the upper slope. Model results for the East sea show the semi-diurnal baroclinic modes contain almost all the energy transferred from the barotropic mode.

  • Density inversions are investigated by using the oceanographic data of temperature and salinity obtained in the Japan Sea Srom 1965 To 1979. The density inversions are found more frequently in winter than summer. About one half of the Japan Sea has the density inversions in winter, while in summer, they appear only in the small part os the Korean Strait. The inversions are usually sormed surface layers of a few tens of meters. Such phenomena can be explained by the advection of cold water in the suface layer by Ekman drift: In winter, the southward flow of surface cold water due to northwesterly monsoon causes the density inversions, and in summer, surface layer on the Korean strit unstable.

  • The origin of the East sea is discussed in the light of modern geophysical theories such as plate tectonics and sea-floor spreading. The origin of the East Sea was due to the tensional force of the back-arc spreading which was initiated as early as late Cretaceous time of Paleocene. The spreading was asymmetric with a fast movement of eastward or southeastward and a slow westward motions. The spreading, however, was confined to the East Sea due to the change of the Pacific Plate north-northwest to west-northwest during Eocene time. Further intensifying research based on more accurate seismic data as well as on geophysical and geological informations should be carried out continuously to understand if the spreading of the Japan Sea died out due to triple junction formed by mention of the Pacific, the Eurasian, and the Philippine plates since the Quaternary.

  • 동해의 일본쪽 해저 단층내에서 발생한 지진해일은 우리나라 동해안에 영향을 미쳐왔다. 또한 1983년 동해중부 지진해일과 1993년 홋카이도남서외해 지진해일은 우리나라 뿐만 아니라 러시아에도 인명피해와 재산피해를 발생시켰다. 우리나라 동해안에는 울진, 월성 및 고리 원자력발전소 부지가 있고, 앞으로도 수 개의 원전이 계획되어 있다. 따라서 지진해일의 영향 평가 및 원자력발전소의 안전성 확인에 대한 계속적인 연구가 필요하다. 기존에 수행된 동해에서의 지진해일 평가인구는 원자력발전소의 설계와 관련하여 안전성을 확인하는 정량적인 평가와 지진해일에 의한 예상 범람지역을 평가하는 것으로 크게 분류할 수 있다. 또한 최근에는 보다 세밀한 격자에 의한 비교적 자세한 평가연구가 수행되었다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 지진해일범람 수치모형을 이용하여 1993년 지진해일에 대하여 울진 원자력발전소의 안전성 평가를 수행하였으며, 지진해일 평가결과를 이용하여 원자력발전소의 안전성을 확인하였다. 또한 현재까지의 원자력발전소에 대한 지진해일 안전성 평가연구에 대한 검토를 통하여 지진해일에 대하여 원자력발전소의 안전성 확인을 위한 평가에서 향후 고려하여야 할 몇몇 사항을 제안한다.
