  • Thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena of piezolaminated plates are investigated by applying an are-length scheme to Newton-Raphson method. Based on the layerwise displacement theory and von Karman strain-displacement relationships, nonlinear finite element formulations are derived for the thermopiezoelastic composite plates. From the static and dynamic viewpoint, nonlinear thermopierzoelastic behavior and vibration characteristicx are stuied for symmetric and eccentric structural models with various piezoelestric actuation modes. Present results show the possibility to enhance the performance, namely thermopiezoelastic snapping, induced by the excessive piezoelectric actuation in the active suppression of thermally buckled large deflection piezolaminated paltes.

  • Rubber materials with excellent damping property are widely applied for vibration isolators. The dynamic characteristics of the rubber materials for vibration isolators were investigated. Dynamic tests for rubber materials with five different hardness were performed. In dynamic tests for test specimen, non-resonance method was used to obtain the dynamic storage modulus and loss factor. Moreover, the effect of dynamic vibration frequency, strain amplitude and temperature were investigated. As results, the storage modulus and loss factor generally increase when the hardness and frequency increase, and the glass transition temperature is $-50^{\circ}C$ by a large change in modulus and loss factor.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the dynamic behaviour of containment building in nuclear power plant excited by aircraft impact loading using a lower order 8-node solid element. The yield and failure surfaces for concrete material model is formulated on the basis of Drucker-Prager yield criteria and are assumed to be varied by taking account of the visco-plastic energy dissipation. The standard 8-node solid element has prone to exhibit the element deficiencies and the so-called B bar method proposed by Hughes is therefore adopted in this study. The implicit Newmark method is adopted to ensure the numerical stability during the analysis. Finally, the effect of different levels of cracking strain and several types of aircraft loading are examined on the dynamic behaviour of containment building and the results are quantitatively summarized as a future benchmark.

  • Dynamic fracture mechanism of rock is important to improve rapid excavation method and develop precise damage assesment of rock mass in the vicinity of an excavation. In order to investigate dynamic fracture characteristics and dynamic damage mechanism of brittle materials, this study employed pulse shape-controlled Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system. The P- and S-wave velocities of the tested samples were measured before and after tests to examine damage of the samples. The decay ratios of the Ultrasonic wave velocities increased with impart velocities and the samples which have lower strength showed higher permanent strain significantly.

  • Soil and rock dynamic properties such as shear wave velocity (VS), compressional wave velocity (VP) and corresponding Poisson's ratio ( v ) are very important geotechnical parameters in predicting deformational behavior of structures as well as practicing seismic design and performance evaluation. In an effort to measure the parameter efficiently and accurately, various bore-hole seismic testing techniques have been, thus, developed and used during past several decades. In this study, cross-hole seismic testing technique which is known as the most reliable seismic method was adopted for obtaining geotechnical dynamic properties. To perform successfully the cross-hole test for rock as well as soil layers regardless of the ground water level, spring-loaded source which impact laterally a subsurface ground in vertical bore-hole was developed and applied at three study areas, which contain four sites composed of two existing port sites and two new LNG storage facility sites. The geotechnical dynamic properties such as VS, VP and v with depth were efficiently determined from the laterally impacted cross-hole seismic tests at study sites, and were provided as the fundamental parameters for the seismic performance evaluation of the existing ports and the seismic design of the LNG storage facilities.

  • The engine bearing transmits the powers from cylinder to crankshaft with small clearance between con-rod and crankpin. The minimum oil film thickness is a significant parameter in the operation of bearing. The contact pressure of bearing should be considered for the reason that elastic deformation of bearing be caused by contact pressure of bearing. There are important factors which are maintaining of minimum oil film thickness expecting of the length of maximum and minimum oil film thickness with changing of the loads to keep running normally. Furthermore, this study is very crucial to develop the design of engine bearing and crankshaft system.

  • Structures show the phehomena of deformation and lowering of function with time-lapse by artificial environments and changes of geotechnical conditions or accumulation of initial deformation elements. This study aims the structural assessment of cultural property, Chum-Sung-Dae, located in Kyeongju city, Korea. It was built about 1,300 years ago, and has undergone deformation and ground-subsidence with time-lapse. Non-destructive evaluation techniques were applied to the Chum-Sung-Dae, to protect it from survey Because of this reason, 3D precise laser scanning surveying system was applied to measure the exact size of Chum-Sung-Dae, displacement and declining angles. Geophysical exploration also was applied to study the subsurface distribution of geotechnical parameters or physical properties. Natural frequencies were measured from real and model of Chum-Sung-Dae to study the dynamic characteristics of vibration and/or earthquake load and stiffness of structures.

  • The resonant column testing determines the shear modulus and material damping factor dependent on the shear strain magnitude, based on the wave-propagation theory. The determination of the dynamic soil properties requires the theoretical formulation of the dynamic behavior of the resonant column testing system. One of the theoretical formulations is the use of the wave equation for the soil specimen in the resonant column testing device. Wood, Richart and Hall derived the wave equation by assuming the linear elastic soil, and didn't take the material damping into consideration. Hardin incorporated the viscoelastic damping of soil in the wave equation, but he had to assume the material damping factor for the determination of the shear modulus. For the better theoretical formulation of the resonant column testing, this study derived a new wave equation to include the viscosity of soil, and proposed an approach for the solution. Also, in this study, the equation of motion for the testing system, which is another approach of the theoretical formulation of the resonant column testing, was also derived. The equation of motion leads to the better understanding of the resonant column testing, which includes the dynamic magnification factor and the phase angle of the response. For the verification of the proposed equation of motion for the resonant column testing, the finite element analysis was performed for the resonant column testing. The comparison of the dynamic magnification factors and the phase angles far the system response were performed.

  • There are basically two methods for the seismic design of underground structures ; analytical or pseudo-static, and dynamical method. In pseudo-static analysis approach, the ground deformations are imposed as a static load and soil-structure interaction does not include dynamic or wave propagation effects. However the behavior of soil structure interaction is nonlinear, it needs to consider nonlinear soil-structure interaction effects. In this study simplified seismic analysis method to consider soil-structure interaction by iterative procedure is proposed and the results are compared and analyzed by a finite difference computer program.
