이번 탐방은 대한민국 최초의 손해보험회사로서 83년의 역사와 전통을 자랑하는 동양화재의 중추 조직으로서 보험계약자를 위한 사고예방활동과 적정요율 산출을 위한 언더라이팅 업무를 수행하고 있는 동양화재 위험관리연구소를 방문하였다.

연구의 목적은 의류생산에 있어서 동양(Oriental women)과 서양여자(Caucasian women: U.S.A)의 인체계측에 의한 치수의 비교를 하였다. 연구자료는 동양여자 100명과 서양여자 970명의 자료로 비교하였다. 동양여자의 인체계측치는 1981년 4월 일본에서 필자에 의해 수집되고 서양여자의 인체계측치는 1976년 11월부터 1977년 2월 미국(U.S.A by the Quartermaster Corps of the United States Army)에서 인체계측을 한 자료이다. 동양과 서양여자의 인체계측치 중에서 각각 32항목을 선출하여 비교된 것은 높이항목과 길이항목(height-related measurements; height and length), 나비항특(surface measurements; breadth and depth) , 둘레항목(measurement of circumference)이다. 32항목을 평균치의 t-test로 동양인과 서양인을 비교한 결과, 모든 항목에서 P<.001 수준에서 유의한 차를 보였다. 그 중에서 머리둘레, 목둘레, 손목둘레, 팔굼치둘레, 손바닥둘레의 항목에서는 동양인이 서양인에 비해서 큰 값을 나타냈다. 그 외에 27개 항목은 동양인이 전부 높거나, 길거나, 또는 큰 값을 나타냈다. 표준편차에서 보이는 바와 같이 서양인자가 동양여자보다 크고, 특히 높이 항목, 길이항목(height-related measurements)이 더 높거나 길다. 이러한 결과로서 동양과 서양여자의 인종적인 측면에서, 다양한 의류생산에 있어서 고려해야 할 것 같다. 이 동양과 서양여자의 인체계측비교에 중요한 요점을 두고 연구한 것은 의류생산과정에 있어서, size설정, 보다 미적인 design, 의복구성을 위한 등등에 고려되겠으나, 특히 미국과 같은 대량생산국에서 동양과의 무역(import or export)에 있어서 중요하게 고려가 될것이며, 나날이 발전하는 우리나라의 의류무역에도 고려되리라 본다. 뒤에 recommendations for future research에서 말한 바와 같이 서양과 한국여자의 입체계측비교를 하며 우리나라의 의류무역(수출)에 도움이 되었으면 한다.

서비스 로봇이 발전함에 따라 인간이 직접 해결해야했던 작업들이 로봇에게 위임가능하게 되었으나, 서비스 로봇이 잘못된 행동을 하게 되는 경우 작업에 심각한 혼란이 야기되고, 사람의 안전과 직결될 수 있다. 이러한 문제점을 극복하기 위해 지능형 서비스 로봇을 위한 자가 치유 방법론 및 자가 치유시스템의 구조를 제안한다. 제안 방법론은 7단계로 설계 및 구현되며, 시스템 구조는 모니터링, 진단 및 평가, 치유전략 계획 및 실행 순으로 수행된다. 제안사항을 통해 로봇의 고장으로 인한 불편을 최소화 하며 관리를 위해 발생하는 비용 절감이 가능하다.

This article criticizes the dichotomous world view in which the East and the West are absolutely divided from each other and asserts that the East and the West should be understood as 'we' who ought to acknowledge each other not only as subjects but also reciprocally as 'others'. If the East is 'I', then the West is 'You' and vice versa and as such, the East differs from the West. Hence, supposing that they both regard themselves as subjects and if they realize that they can also be others against the other subject, they as different subjects should be understood as 'others in us'. Since the 19th Century the East has made efforts to learn and accept Western culture and thought. But it seems that the East has never regarded the West as an 'other in us', but rather as either an 'other outside of us' or as 'the real I that it should develop into'. This shows the self-contradictory perspective of the East. It can be thought that such an attitude was revealed as typical of the Far East in the 19th Century, in which the Opium War broke out and Sinocentrism collapsed. On the other hand, the West has never recognized the Eastasan 'other in us'. Nowadays we pursue the most actual value, that is, 'globalization'. In order to realize that value for the development of the whole human, it is necessary that both the East and West should first recognize each other as the 'other in us'.

동양시멘트는 1957년 국내 자본으로 최초로 설립된 시멘트 제조회사이다. 찬란한 동양시멘트의 역사만큼이나 동양시멘트 기술연구소는 국내 시멘트 기술력 향상의 주역으로 자리매김하며 맹활약해왔다. 연구소는 시멘트 산업의 호황기인 1984년 1월 기술혁신을 통한 시장개척을 목적으로 신설한 기술개발실을 모태로 하고 있다. 1986년 3월 기술연구소가 처음 설립되었는데 이후 연구개발 분야를 확대하면서 연구개발과 인재육성이 미래 시장을 선도할 수 있다는 신념에 따라 2005년 연구기능을 확대 개편하여, 삼척공장 내에 새로운 둥지를 틀었다. 현재 18명(기업부설연구소 등록기준)으로 구성된 전문 연구인력이 첨단 신기술 개발을 통해 시멘트산업의 장밋빛 미래를 그려가고 있다.

People say that dichotomous way of thought in the Occident separating human from nature resulted in ecological crisis. Furthermore, it is said that surmounting Occidental way of thought is necessary to heal ecological crisis, and ecological elements in Oriental traditional philosophy could be the alternative for changing anti-ecological disposition inherent in Occidental thought. Although so-called ecology did not exist in Oriental traditional philosophy, there is room for reviewing Oriental traditional philosophy in terms of ecological elements or ecological orientation. In modern society, however, the vitality and significance of ecological elements in Oriental traditional philosophy cannot be conclusively verified. On the other hand, Occidental thought regarded as the main culprit of environmental destruction may not contain anti-ecological contents. Therefore, this study critically reviews the possibility and significance of modern change of ecological thought in Oriental tradition by raising two questions, "Is Occidental view of nature anti-ecological?" and "Is Oriental view of nature ecological?"

Both An, Joonggeun and Park, Youngcheol lived in similar innovative time period from the enlightenment times through the Japanese colonial era. Even though they had the same resolution to pour their energy on national sovereignty and oriental peace, their opinions and activities were contrary. While An aimed the gun at the heart of Japanese imperialism with the belief that Japanses empire hindered Korea's independence and the Oriental Peace, Park willingly joined the heart of the imperialism with the belief that Japan could enhance Korean civilization and the Oriental peace. They had commonly developed their visions about oriental peace on the basis of the theory of social evolution focusing on the survival of the fittest and the weak-to-the-wall kind of society that had been prevalent since 19th century. Furthermore, their logics were based on racism combined with the social evolution theory. Although the two men lived in the same era, their spirit of the times were quite different. An considered that the Japanese extortion of Korean sovereignty caused the corruption of peace of the East. On the other hand, Park believed that peaceful age came by way of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity constructed by the union of Korea and Japan. Especially Park put higher value on Japanese modern civilization than Korean sovereignty and also insisted Korea should take Japanese case as its model.
