Slope Stability Analysis Considering Multi Failure Mode (다중파괴모드를 고려한 사면안정해석)

  • Conventional slope stability analysis is focused on calculating minimum factor of safety or maximum probability of failure. To minimize inherent uncertainty of soil properties and analytical model and to reflect various analytical models and its failure shape in slope stability analysis, slope stability analysis method considering simultaneous failure probability for multi failure mode was proposed. Linear programming recently introduced in system reliability analysis was used for calculation of simultaneous failure probability. System reliability analysis for various analytical models could be executed by this method. For application analysis for embankment, the results of this method shows that system stability of embankment calculate quantitatively.

Reliability Analysis for Fracture of Concrete Armour Units (콘크리트 피복재의 단면파괴에 대한 신뢰성 해석)

  • A fracture or breakage of the concrete armor units in the primary cover layer of breakwaters is studied by using the reliability analysis which may be defined as the structural stability. The reliability function can be derived as a function of the angle of rotation that represents the rocking of armor units quantitatively. The relative influences of all of random variables related to the material and geometric properties on the fracture of armor units is analyzed in detail. In addition, the probability of failure for the fracture of individual armor unit can be evaluated as a function of the incident wave height. Finally, Bernoulli random process and the allowable fracture ratio may be introduced together in this paper, by which the probability of failure of a breakwater due to the fracture of armer units can be obtained straightforwardly. It is found that the probability of failure of a breakwater due to the fracture of armor units may be varied with the several allowable fracture ratios. Therefore, it should be necessary to consider the structural stability as well as the hydraulic stability for the design of breakwaters with multi-leg slender concrete armor units of large size under wave action in deep water.

  • Evaluation of stability in traditional designing of reinforced soil structures is executed by examination of internal and external stability. Analysis of internal stability is for pull-out and ductile strength. Analysis of external stability is for settlement, overturning and sliding. To minimize inherent uncertainties of soil properties and analytical model, reliability analysis was developed recently. In this study, reliability analysis method considering simultaneous failure probability for various failure mode of internal and external stability is proposed. By applying uni-modal bounds, Stability of system reliability of reinforced soil structures is evaluated by integrating multi failure mode for various analytical model. Because of complex consideration for various failure shapes and modes, it is possible to secure advanced safety by using simultaneous failure probability. And evaluation of reinforced soil structure is executed by representative index, simultaneous failure probability, than previous method.

  • 현재까지 SFCP 해석법은 기초단계에 있으며, 아직도 정립된 방법이 없는 것이 사실이다. 따라서, 이 분야에는 많은 개선을 필요로 하고 있다. 이와 같은 개선은 이론적인 연구뿐만이 아니라, 실험적인 연구가 바탕이 되어야 라며, 동시에SFCP에 영향을 주는 초기균열의 변동성, 하중의 변동성 등을 정확한 모델링 방법에 대한 연구가 병행되어야 한다. 그리고 더 나아가서 실제 구 조물에서 피로파괴에 영향을 주는 중요한 요소인 잔류응력, 부식 등의 고려하는 방법에 관한 연구가 수행 되어져야 할 것이다. 또한, 지금까지의 연구가 주로 구조부재에 하나의 균열이 존 재한다는 가정을 내포하고 있는데, 실구조물에 적용하기 위해서는 여러개의 균열이 동시에 존 재하는 경우에 대한 연구와 균열이 성장하면서 합체(coalescence)하는 경우에 대한 연구도 수행 되어야 한다. 이와 같은 연구가 꾸준히 진행되어 소기의 성과를 거둠으로써, 구조물의 피로파괴 확률을 정확하게 추정할 수 있을 것이며, 이에 따라 합리적인 설계가 가능해질 것이다.

Reliability-based Design Method of Concrete Armour Units with Structural Stability (구조적 안정성을 고려한 콘크리트 피복재의 신뢰성 설계)

  • A method for the determination of concrete armor unit weights with hydraulic stability and structural stability may be formulated in this paper. The hydraulic stability is analyzed by using Hudson's formula, the structural stability is also studied by evaluation of maximum flexural tensile stresses in armor unit induced by the impact loads and by comparison of those with the tensile resistance strength directly. The applicable criteria for concrete armor units can be represented as a function of design wave heights with return period, armor weights, and tensile strengths for the practical uses. In addition, reliability analyses for two failure modes are carried out to take into account some uncertainties. Finally, a series system for two-failure mode analysis can be made up straightforwardly, by which the optimal weights of armor units can be estimated with the various relative breakages, given the specific target probability of failure under the concepts of reliability-based design method.

  • Engineering structures including civil infrastructures require a life-cycle cost and benefit during their service lives. The service life of a structure can be extended through appropriate inspection and maintenance actions. In general, this service life extension requires more life-cycle cost and cumulative benefit. For this reason, structure managers need to make a rational decision regarding the service life management considering both the cost and benefit simultaneously. In this paper, the probabilistic decision tool to determine the optimal service life based on cost-benefit analysis is presented. This decision tool requires an estimation of the time-dependent effective cost-benefit under uncertainty to formulate the optimization problem. The effective cost-benefit is expressed by the difference between the cumulative benefit and life-cycle cost of a deteriorating structure over time. The objective of the optimization problem is maximizing the effective cost-benefit, and the associated solutions are the optimal service life and maintenance interventions. The decision tool presented in this paper can be applied to any deteriorating engineering structure.

Determination of cross section of composite breakwaters with multiple failure modes and system reliability analysis (다중 파괴모드에 의한 혼성제 케이슨의 단면 산정 및 제체에 대한 시스템 신뢰성 해석)

  • The stabilities of sliding and overturning of caisson and bearing capacity of mound against eccentric and inclined loads, which possibly happen to a composite caisson breakwaters, have been analyzed by using the technique of multiple failure modes. In deterministic approach, mathematical functions have been first derived from the ultimate limit state equations. Using those functions, the minimum cross section of caisson can straightforwardly be evaluated. By taking a look into some various deterministic analyses, it has been found that the conflict between failure modes can be occurred, such that the stability of bearing capacity of mound decreased as the stability of sliding increased. Therefore, the multiple failure modes for the composite caisson breakwaters should be taken into account simultaneously even in the process of deterministically evaluating the design cross section of caisson. Meanwhile, the reliability analyses on multiple failure modes have been implemented to the cross section determined by the sliding failure mode. It has been shown that the system failure probabilities of the composite breakwater are very behaved differently according to the variation of incident waves. The failure probabilities of system tend also to increase as the crest freeboards of caisson are heightening. The similar behaviors are taken place in cases that the water depths above mound are deepening. Finally, the results of the first-order modal are quite coincided with those of the second-order modal in all conditions of numerical tests performed in this paper. However, the second-order modal have had higher accuracy than the first-order modal. This is mainly due to that some correlations between failure modes can be properly incorporated in the second-order modal. Nevertheless, the first-order modal can also be easily used only when one of failure probabilities among multiple failure modes is extremely larger than others.

Optimal design of nonlinear seismic isolation system by a multi-objective optimization technique integrated with a stochastic linearization method (추계학적 선형화 기법을 접목한 다목적 최적화기법에 의한 비선형 지진격리시스템의 최적설계)

  • This paper proposes an optimal design method for the nonlinear seismic isolated bridge. The probabilities of failure at the pier and the seismic isolator are considered as objective functions for optimal design, and a multi-objective optimization technique is employed to efficiently explore a set of multiple solutions optimizing mutually-conflicting objective functions at the same time. In addition, a stochastic linearization method is incorporated into the multi-objective optimization framework in order to effectively estimate the stochastic responses of the bridge without performing numerous nonlinear time history analyses during the optimization process. As a numerical example to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method, the Nam-Han river bridge is taken into account, and the proposed method and the existing life-cycle-cost based design method are both applied for the purpose of comparing their seismic performances. The comparative results demonstrate that the proposed method not only shows better seismic performance but also is more economical than the existing cost-based design method. The proposed method is also proven to guarantee improved performance under variations in seismic intensity, in bandwidth and in the predominant frequency of the seismic event.

Effect of turbulent motion on size distribution of suspended flocs (난류 거동이 점착성 부유사의 입도분포에 미치는 영향)

  • 점착성 유사는 비점착성 유사에 비해 1차입자의 크기가 작아 1차입자간의 점착력이 중요한 역할을 하는 유사를 말한다. 점착성 유사는 비점착성 유사에 비해 크기가 작아 입자의 전자기적 점착력의 영향을 무시할 수 없으므로 점착력으로 인해 입자들은 서로 응집하는 동시에 입자들 간의 충돌에 의하여 파괴되는 과정을 거친다. 이러한 응집과 파괴가 지속되는 일련의 과정을 응집현상이라 한다. 점착성 유사는 응집과정을 통해 일차입자보다 크기가 크며 수십 개에서 수천 개의 일차입자와 물의 덩어리인 플럭을 형성하게 된다. 흐름 내 존재하는 플럭의 응집현상에 가장 지배적인 영향을 미치는 인자로 난류 거동이 알려진 바 있다. 본 연구에서는 난류 거동에 따른 점착성 플럭의 입도분포 변화를 살펴보고자 하였으며, 점착성 유사 입도분포 모형을 개발하였다. 수치모형의 개발은 확률과정(또는 추계과정)의 개념을 바탕으로 한다. 점착성 유사의 응집현상을 구성하는 응집과정은 다양한 연구를 통해 메커니즘들이 규명된 것과 달리 파괴과정은 난류로 인해 발생하며 무작위한 것으로 여겨진다. 무작위한 플럭의 파괴과정을 확률과정으로 가정하고 매개변수 중 하나를 대수정규분포를 따르는 난수로 고려하였다. 개발된 모형의 검증은 연안지역에서 점착성 플럭의 거동을 측정한 연구결과와의 비교를 통해 수행하였으며, 흐름 유속의 연직분포와 유사 농도의 연직분포, 응집현상 이후 플럭의 평형크기와 입도분포가 모두 합리적으로 계산되는 것이 확인되었다. 더불어 모의 결과에서는 대수정규분포를 따르는 동일한 난수를 적용하였음에도 불구하고 하상으로부터 거리가 가까워짐에 따라 플럭입도분포가 단봉분포(Unimodal Distribution)와 이봉분포(Bimodal Distribution)가 모두 계산되는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 모형의 개발과정에서 플럭의 가능 최대 크기를 콜모고로브 길이규모로 제한한 것과 관련이 있다. 난류 흐름 내 존재하는 플럭의 크기가 응집현상을 통해 난류의 콜모고로브 길이규모까지 성장하는 경우, 난류의 전단응력이 급격하게 증가하여 파괴과정이 활발해지고 응집과정이 저하된다는 것은 널리 알려진 사실이다. 이러한 사실을 바탕으로 플럭의 가능최대 크기를 콜모고로브 길이규모로 제한하였으며, 하상으로부터의 거리에 따라 콜모고로브 길이규모의 변화로 인해 콜모고로브 길이규모 부근에서 하나의 최빈값이 추가로 나타나는 것으로 이해된다. 수치모의 결과로부터 얻어진 콜모고로브 길이규모와 입도분포 형태의 상관관계를 보다 정확하게 이해하기 위해 실측 자료들을 검토해 본 결과, 균질한 재료를 이용한 실험실 실험결과에서 플럭 이봉분포의 최빈값이 콜모고로브 길이규모와 일치하는 것이 확인되었다. 연안지역에서 측정을 수행한 자료들에서도 이봉분포 또는 다봉분포와 콜모고로브 길이 규모와의 상관성을 찾아볼 수 있었다.
