Scotopic Pupil Size in Myopes (근시안에서 암순응상태의 동공크기)

  • Purpose: This research was performed to measure and analyze scotopic pupil size in myopes and to figure out the factors that influence it. Methods: The pupil size of 191 healthy myopic subjects were measured with the pupillometer (Colvard pupillometer, OASIS medical, USA) in scotopic and analyzed with the age, corneal size, spherical equivalent refractive error, corneal curvature. In addition, it was compared with the measurements of intra-examiner and inter-examiner to verify reproducibility of pupillometer. Results: The mean (${\pm}$SD) scotopic pupil size was $6.64{\pm}0.68$ mm (range, 5.00~8.00 mm), the lower age and the larger corneal size, The bigger the pupil size. The lower spherical equivalent refractive error and steepper corneal curvature tends to be smaller. The reproducibility of intra-examiner and inter-examiner in pupillometer showed the reliability highly (Guttman splithalf point > 0.91). Conclusions: The pupil size associated with age, corneal size, spherical equivalent refractive error and corneal curvature in scotopic condition. It can refer to prevent inconvenience that may occur RGP contact lenses, cataract surgery and refractive surgery.

Relationship of Pupil's Size and Gaze Frequency for Neuro Sports Marketing: Focusing on Sigma Analysis (뉴로 스포츠 마케팅을 위한 동공 확장과 주시빈도 간의 관계: 시그마 분석법을 적용하여)

  • In order to verify the effectiveness of marketing in the basketball stadium, this study measured and analyzed the gaze frequency and interest when the pupil was expanded by using the eye-tracking technology among various neuro marketing techniques of marketing. To analyze the section where the pupil size get expanded, interval of pupil size was higher than 2.275% (2 sigma data) and higher than 0.135% high (3 sigma data). Overall the valid data was analyzed by inflection points according to gaze frequency. We also analyzed the correlation between overall valid data and the ranges where the pupil size was significantly increased. The result showed that the correlation between overall valid data and pupil size 2 sigma data showed the highest correlation with 0.805. The pupil size 2 sigma data and pupil size 3 sigma data showed a correlation with 0.781, overall the valid data and pupil size 2 sigma data showed a correlation with 0.683. Therefore, it is concluded that, the section where the pupil size was expanded and the section at which gaze frequency is higher in the eye-tracking data were similar. However, the correlation between data of pupil size is determined to be significantly expanded and overall the valid data is decreased.

Pupil Data Measurement and Social Emotion Inference Technology by using Smart Glasses (스마트 글래스를 활용한 동공 데이터 수집과 사회감성 추정 기술)

  • 본 연구에서는 적외선 카메라 기반의 비접촉식 측정 방법을 이용하여 동공 반응 데이터를 수집하여 공감의 사회감성을 객관적이고 정량적으로 추정하는데 그 목적이 있다. 실험에는 10명(남 6명, 여 4명, M ± SD = 24.17 ± 2.16세)의 피험자가 참여하였다. 30초의 참조 데이터 측정 후, 공감 유무에 따라 과제는 얼굴 표정 모방 과제와 얼굴 표정 자발적 표현 과제로 구분되어 두 사람은 표정으로 상호작용하였고, 2번씩 반복 진행하며 적외선 카메라를 통해 동공을 촬영하였다. 이진화 및 원형 윤곽선 검출법의 영상처리를 활용하여 동공 데이터를 수집하였고, 이동 평균 기법을 활용해 눈깜빡임 노이즈를 제거하고 동공 크기 개인차로 데이터 표준화를 진행하였다. 공감 유무에 따른 동공 크기 데이터는 정규성 검증 및 독립표본 t검정을 통해 통계적 유의성을 확인하였다. 분석결과, 공감하는 경우(M ± SD = 0.508 ± 1.278)와 공감하지 않은 경우(M ± SD = 1.681 ± 0.968) 동공 크기가 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보였다(t(18) = -2.313, p = 0.033). 판별분석을 통해 동공 크기에 따른 공감의 유무를 추정하는 규칙을 정의하였다. 본 연구에서 제안한 동공 크기 데이터를 이용한 공감의 사회감성 추정 기술은 비접촉식 카메라 기반의 기술로 스마트 글래스와 접목되어 다양한 분야에 활용도가 높을 것으로 기대된다.

A Model of Pupil's Change with Luminance (Luminance에 의한 Pupil의 변화에 대한 모델)

  • The size of pupil with pupillary light reflex is determined by the amount of a luminance. and it is dependent with the distribution function of the retinal illuminance which is the amount of transmittance for the external light due to the size of pupil, and the detector of cone and rod due to the amount of the luminance. The change of the pupil size with the luminance can be expressed with the mathematical model $$y(x)={\alpha}+{\beta}\frac{1}{1+{e}{x}{p}(x-x_0)/{\theta}}$$ where ${\alpha}$ is the size of the pupil diameter in a maximum value of the luminance, ${\beta}$ is the deviation of the pupil's diameter between maximum and minimum, ${\theta}$ is the parameter showed the degree of a sensitivity. Comparing with the experimental value of P.Moon et al, We known that the equation of the model is very compatible.

The Difference in Pupil Size Responding to Cognitive Load and Emotional Arousal Questions between Guilty and Innocent Groups (유죄 및 무죄 집단 간 인지적 부하 및 정서적 각성 질문에 따른 동공크기의 변화의 차이)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of emotional arousal and cognitive load on pupil diameter during a lie detection interview. The guilty group (n = 30) committed a mock crime (i.e., stealing cash) and the innocent group (n = 30) performed a mission (i.e., sending a message) in the research assistant's office. After that, their pupil size was measured using a wearable eye-tracker during the interview. The interview questions were classified with the three cognitive load, three emotional arousal, and three neutral questions. The results indicate that the main effects of group and time were not significant, but the interaction between group and time was significant. It means that when answering cognitive load questions, the guilty group showed larger increase in pupil diameter than the innocent group. The present study suggests that inducing cognitive load is more effective than inducing emotional arousal during an interview when using pupil diameter as an index of deception, and it is expected to improve the accuracy of lie detection.

A Study on Neuro Sports Marketing by using Pupil's Size of Men: Focusing on Basketball Game (남성의 동공 크기를 이용한 뉴로 스포츠 마케팅의 접근 방법: 농구 경기를 중심으로)

  • The present study used one of research techniques which is eye gaze tracking for neuromarketing. When pupil's size of men dilated over than three sigma (0.135%), the interest and eye movement in observation were measured. According to statistical analysis of previous studies, three sigma range is meaningful therefore sigma range was used as operational definition because 'pupil dilatation' is difficult to be define in eye gaze tracking data. Pictures of basketball games were selected as visual stimuli and 90% effective ratio of total 7,200 data were calculated. Thus, 29 of 34 participants were used for test. Pupil's size was calculated by applying pupil's width and height into a formular; [Pupil's size = Pupil width/2${\times}$Pupil height/$2{\times}{\pi}$]. In conclusion, billboard utilized for sports marketing had meaningless effects because gaze frequency to basketball player and surrounding environment was higher than that to billboard when participantsas game spectators diltaed their pupil's size over than three sigma. Thus, it was required using new marketing strategies like neuromarketing to increase utility through the present study.

Intracameral Epinephrine Injection after Phacoemulsification on Pupil Dilation during Phacovitrectomy for Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (유리체절제술과 수정체유화술 동시 수술 시 백내장수술 후 앞방내 에피네프린 주입과 동공 확대)

  • Purpose: We explored the mydriatic effects of injected intracameral epinephrine after phacoemulsification (PE) combined with phacovitrectomy to treat proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Methods: We enrolled 96 patients (96 eyes) who underwent phacovitrectomy to treat PDR; we used ImageJ software to measure pupil sizes and the ratios of pupil to cornea area (PCA) before and after PE and after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). We compared pupil sizes between those who received intracameral epinephrine (0.001% w/v) after PE but before PPV (study group, 46 eyes) and patients not so treated (control group, 50 eyes). Results: The PCA ratios of the study group were $0.52{\pm}0.11$ before PE, $0.43{\pm}0.12$ after PE, and $0.51{\pm}0.11$ after PPV, respectively. Changes in pupil size were significant (p < 0.001, p < 0.001 respectively). The PCA ratios of the control group were $0.52{\pm}0.10$ before PE, $0.39{\pm}0.15$ after PE, and $0.43{\pm}0.15$ after PPV, respectively. Changes in pupil size after PE were significant (p = 0.011) but the change after PPV was not (p = 0.056). Conclusions: Intracameral epinephrine given after PE but before PPV effectively dilates the pupils during phacovitrectomy to treat PDR.

Research on the Change in Index of Pupil in the Initial Observation on Large Space of Library (공간의 초기 주시과정에 나타난 동공지표의 크기변화에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to conduct eye-tracking experiments to target large spaces and to analyze the characteristics of pupil gaze by gender. By analyzing the change of pupil size in the eye-tracking experiment, we suggest a template for objective and scientific analyses of gender observation data. Additionally, based on the difference between gender and time to pupil size change, we noted the characteristic of time that gather the visual perception data information and showed that females attend to interesting elements of visual information one to two seconds slower than males. In the initial "$1sec{\rightarrow}2sec$", the pupil size has been increased in leap condition of male and in fixed condition of female. In addition, if condition limits to fixed observation to view the change rates on gender then the pupil size of female was larger than male before 9 seconds, while male's pupil size was larger after 9 seconds. This indicates that females obtain visual information through a relatively larger pupil size during the first 1-8 seconds after stimulus presentation, while males acquire it between 10-15 seconds after input. However, based on the result that the pupil size of female was larger than male on the change of observation time, the pupil size movement on female was energized to watch more interest element after a certain period of time.

Emotion Classification Method Using Various Ocular Features (다양한 눈의 특징 분석을 통한 감성 분류 방법)

  • In this paper, emotion classification was performed by using four ocular features extracted from near-infrared camera image. According to comparing with previous work, the proposed method used more ocular features and each feature was validated as significant one in terms of emotion classification. To minimize side effects on ocular features caused by using visual stimuli, auditory stimuli for causing two opposite emotion pairs such as "positive-negative" and "arousal-relaxation" were used. As four features for emotion classification, pupil size, pupil accommodation rate, blink frequency, and eye cloased duration were adopted which could be automatically extracted by using lab-made image processing software. At result, pupil accommodation rate and blink frequency were statistically significant features for classification arousal-relaxation. Also, eye closed duration was the most significant feature for classification positive-negative.

Study of UV-cut Effect by Luminance and Size of pupil in lens (Luminance와 동공크기 변화에 따른 렌즈에서 UV 차단효과 연구)

  • We analyzed the luminance in the visual light region and the size of pupil by the luminance to estimate an UV-A line cut efficiency in the lens. The size of pupil by the luminance(L) was given by ${\Phi}=d-e{\cdot}tanh(f{\cdot}logL)$ and the transmittance efficiency value of a size of pupil was given by $T_r(r)=1-gr^2+hr^4$. We derived the absolute cut efficiency value ${\alpha}$ and the exclusion index $b=(1-{\alpha}){\times}100%$ about the UV-A in the $320{\sim}400nm$ regions. The ${\alpha}$ and b values were obtained respectively 0.018, 0.31, 0.273, 0.153 and 98, 69, 72, 85% of Uv-cut Lens, CR-39, red color and blue color.
