  • This study aims to suggest the values and utilization measures of the stone walls in Jeju Island as place assets. The discussion on this subject may serve as a breakthrough to resolve the current situation where the stone walls in Jeju Island have been focused on for their potential value not for their practical value as place assets. Moreover, specific measures to utilize Jeju stone walls may become a vehicle to seek the sustainable development of the region. This study discussed the types, functions and values of the stone walls in Jeju Island as place assets and suggested practical measures to use the structures based on their regional distribution. The in-depth discussions largely concluded that there might be five values and seven utilization measures with regard to the Jeju stone walls. The results of the study are expected to be utilized as a new indicator for the regional development of Jeju Island.

  • Recently, stone walls in Jeju Island have gained more attention as their importance in cultural value and tourism source got recognized. In addition, there are several projects to restore the walls underway at local governments' level. This study was conducted with the idea that it is also necessary to find out the background to build stone walls and its implication. The study mainly investigated the height of 'Uldam' or a stone wall surrounding the property including the house by using wind maps, geological maps and interview with local residents. The study found out that stone walls are more likely to be higher than others when they were built to protect the property against wind and stood against maximum wind and easily catched stone surround house.

  • In this paper, we present a procedural modeling algorithms to create Korean traditional stone fence using the fractal subdivision. The main process of the algorithm is to get the next step mesh by subdividing each triangle in the previous step triangular mesh. This process is repeated recursively. Dividing each triangle into four sub-triangles after choosing a random point on each side of the triangle and moving each vertices in the normal direction with random perturbations make the bumpy appearance of stone fences. In each step we remove flat vertices which does not influence the shape of the stone. The discrete curvature determines the flatness of a vertex. New triangles whose vertices are the vertices around the removed vertex are added to make a triangular mesh.

  • Based on the metadata of BIGkids, a news big data system, this study analyzed the trends of news coverage by the major fields and topics related to Deoksugung Doldam-gil in mass media. In addition, we tried to interpret the space discourse of Deoksugung Doldam-gil which has been formed in contemporary period through the analysis of data related to BIGKinds, the contents of related reports and context. As a result of the analysis, the coverage of Deoksugung Doldam-gil was mostly reported in the field of 'Culture', and the news related to 'Cooking_Travel', 'Exhibition_Performance' and 'Broadcasting Entertainment.' Deoksugung Doldam-gil was categorized as the pedestrian freindly street, the cultural and artistic street, and the historical street, and interpreted the spatial discourse with related news contents.

  • Today, Deoksugung Doldam-gil, which is a well-known area in Seoul, has become a mixed place as many places reaching a critical age have been converted into parks. However, the previous research on the Deoksugung Doldam-gil was deficient in that the user, an essential variable, was not considered when assessing the place. Based on that, this study aims to analyze and interpret the perception of the places in Deoksugung Doldam-gil and to analyze factors to further enrich the place to visitors. According to the research, the representative idea of Deoksugung Doldam-gil is "the distance you want to go" and that has influencing factors, such as vehicle restrictions and the improvement of the walking environment. The analysis of classifying the variables that make up the perception of the place, physical environments, activities and meanings showed high awareness in, "streets of green (3.95)" and "stone walls of curves (3.88)." In the category of activities, "walking activities in the inner city (4.01)" and "love and romance (3.57)" were high. These results seem to reflect the spatial characteristics of the streets and the familiar image of the place were important. Five factors were extracted from the factor analysis to provide a more detailed understanding of the place perception, the correlation between each factor, and the place atmosphere of Deoksugung Doldam-gil. These factors confirmed a high correlation between 'green landscape' and 'historicity.' This can be attributed to the fact that the analysis reflects vital space, visual experience, and free walking conditions to be important, and these variables are present in urban parks. It also indicates the long-accumulated image and behavior near the site of Deoksugung Palace, including the historical and cultural heritage. It was confirmed that the factors related to the cognitive perception of Deoksugung Doldam-gil and the formation of the atmosphere of the place were strongly recognized. It found that there was a need to reflect the value and importance of 'green' in the future as culture or in the use of preservation and management related to heritage. This study presented a direction to be noted from the perspective of a user's place awareness, but considered only a fraction of the variables that affect the multidimensional sense of place and location recognition, and thus must be supplemented in the future.

  • New directions on rural policy have been discussed due to the domestic and international environmental changes such as the price degradation of agricultural products, maintenance of rural landscape, and so on. Development of amenity in rural areas has been come out as the one of new policy directions. Amenity defines as, in a very broad way, the public benefits accruing from the condition of a place, such as aesthetic beauty, clean air and water, or good street lighting. Amenity in rural area is referred as a resource with a potential possibility for development. Among them rural landscape is regarded as the one of major resources. In Jeju, particularly, stone wall retains the most esthetic landscape in rural regions. In addition, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism appointed stone wall as the one of important components in rural landscape and one of the 100 national historic symbols. Stone wall in Jeju has its intrinsic and real value and is widespread in rural regions. However, in spite of it's popularity, the landscape of stone wall has been degraded without any concerns and has been partly destroyed. Landscape of stonewall should be maintained and the depth of concerns and systematic management measures for protection should be discussed. In this sense, the purpose of this paper, first of all, is to examine the status of stone wall and to evaluate the landscape of stone wall in Jeju. GIS is used as an analysis tool. Several areas such as Hankyung, Namyeup, and so on in Jeju are selected as the case areas for this study.
