De Morgan in the development of algebra and mathematical logic in 19C (19세기 대수학 및 논리학 발달에서의 드모르간의 위상)

  • The purpose of this study is what exactly De Morgan contributed to abstract algebra and mathematical logic. He recognised the purely symbolic nature of algebra and was aware of the existence of algebras other than ordinary algebra. He madealgebra as a science by introducing the ordered field and made the base for abstract algebra. He was one of the reformer of classical mathematical logic. Looking into De Morgan's works, we made it clear that the developments of algebra and mathematical logic in 19C.

  • Since the liberation in 1945, Korean specialists in the field of geological science and mineral resources engineering have developed two disciplines through the cooperation and competition with each other. Specialists both in the geophysics and in the geophysical exploration, who share much, have developed their own fields deeper and broader. Since the late 1990s, specialists in both fields felt the need for an independent society to deal with their fields and discussed the establishment of such a society. In 1997, they discussed to establish a unified society which integrates both fields instead of separated societies. However, in 1998, the Korean Geophysical Society and the Korean Society of Exploration Geophysicists were separately established due to some practical problems. During 7 ~ 8 years since the establishment of the two societies, many members of the two societies intended that the two societies should integrate into a single comprehensive society based on the facts that many fields of each society are overlapped and naturally many members of one society are the members of the other society. The leaders of the two societies accepted these opinions also and began to discuss thoroughly the integration from 2005. Eventually, in 2007, the two societies successfully integrated and established the Korean Society of Earth and Exploration Geophysicists. The Korean Society of Earth and Exploration Geophysicists continues to cooperate and compete with other societies of geological science and mineral resources engineering in Korea and in circumpacific area including Asia, Oceania and Americas, contributing to the development of geophysics and geophysical exploration.

Critical Review on Educational Gerontology in Journal of the Korean Gerontological Society (한국노년학 30년을 통해 본 노년교육 관련 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to review papers published in the Journal of Korean Gerontological Society(1980-2008). For this purpose, the 55 articles on the educational gerontology were collected from the Journal. The published time, the number of authors, the author's positions, subjects, type of the researches, methods, the statistical techniques, topics of the educational gerontology, and so on were analyzed for this research. The results of this study were as follows: (1)The articles regarding on the educational gerontology took 7.14% in the Journal of Korean Gerontological Society. (2)The case of the quantitative researches for the elderly done by single author, performed without fund, through the questionnaire survey, and with more than two statistical techniques were the most common. Based on this researches, the organization of the major field or some courses on the educational gerontology, more research funds for the educational gerontology, and the efforts on the various research methods of themes and objects are recommended for better researches on the educational gerontology. Finally, we must expand our interests for the elderly's empowerment as a learner and the educational gerontology.

Key Factors of Talented Scientists' Growth and ExpeI1ise Development (과학인재의 성장 및 전문성 발달과정에서의 영향 요인에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to explore key factors of expertise development of talented scientists who achieved outstanding research performance according to the stages of expertise development and dimensions of individual-domain-field. To fulfill the research purpose, 31 domestic scientists who were awarded major prizes in the field of science were interviewed in-depth from March to September, 2007. Stages of expertise development were analyzed in light of Csikszentmihalyi's IDFI (individual-domain-field interaction) model. Self-directed learning, multiple interests and finding strength, academic and liberal home environment, and meaningful encounter were major factors affecting expertise development in the exploration stage. In the beginner stage, independence, basic knowledge on major, and thirst for knowledge at university affected expertise development. Task commitment, finding flow, finding their field of interest and lifelong research topic, and mentor in formal education were the affecting factors in the competent stage. Finally, placing priority, communication skills, pioneering new domain, expansion of the domain, and evaluation and support system affected talented scientists' expertise development in the leading stage. The meaning of major patterns of expertise development were analyzed and described. Based on these analyses, educational implications for nurturing scientists were suggested.
