  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate and maximize the value of Dokdo as a marine educational tourism destination. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the identification of Dokdo as a unique territory of Korea rather than a disputed territory by further activating Dokdo tourism. The revitalization of Dokdo tourism was reviewed and analyzed from the viewpoint that it is possible when Dokdo is recognized as a destination for marine educational tourism. As a result of reviewing various research papers, periodicals, and government documents published in Korea and abroad, it is necessary to emphasize on-site education such as patriotism, anti-Japanese consciousness, and historical awareness in order to maximize value as a marine educational destination of Dokdo. Points out that it is possible to differentiate from other tourist destinations. Second, it pointed out that Dokdo preserves and develops to maximize the resource value of various tourism resources it possesses. Third, it pointed out to develop specialized tourism resources that can be linked with Dokdo tourism. Fourth, it pointed out that Dokdo will maximize its development potential as a marine educational tourism destination. Fifth, it is pointed out that there is a need to improve the educational program related to Dokdo. • Since the Shimane Prefecture government in Japan enacted "Takeshima Day" in March 2005, it has held commemorative ceremonies with Japanese politicians present each year on February 22. Japan has marked Dokdo as its territory in elementary and middle high school textbooks, and the number of such references has been increasing in recent years. Shimane Prefecture, which is the area nearest to Dokdo is strengthening Dokdo education in its geography classes at elementary and middle schools as part of regional studies. The study and education on Dokdo was begun by social studies teachers in the Oki Islands in Shimane Prefecture, but now extends throughout the prefecture. The auxiliary educational materials regarding Dokdo produced in Shimane Prefecture include teaching guidelines for teachers, worksheets for students, CDs containing statistics and picture files, and two kinds of DVD movie clips for each grade. In particular, schools teach the damage to the Japanese fishery industry caused by Korea's illegal occupation of Dokdo. This will likely form anti-Korean sentiments among Japanese students. It is hoped that Korean and Japanese scholars will work together to develop Dokdo auxiliary textbooks in order to improve the correct historical understanding of Dokdo.

  • We believe, 'Dokdo is clearly an inherent territory of Korea, in the light of geographical and historical facts', This paper aims to discuss Japanese multidimensional approach on the Issues of Dokdo(Takeshima) in the context of Territory Education. We considered the matter from various angles that supported by the ministry of Foreign affairs and the ministry of Education in national scale, as well as shimane prefecture government and municipality scale. Therefore, It is likely that the approach of territory education on Dokdo in Japan is variable and potential, and is temporary state of condensation, depends on Korea-Japan's political, economical, social, and international conditions. More studies of the new approach must be done for the new implications of Territory Education that embraces all meanings and events according to the disposition of neighbouring condition of Dokdo in world context, keeping out emotional and nationalist sympathies. The result of consideration in this paper are as follows. First, Territory Education in japan was focused on geography, history, Civil, Social Studies, compared with focusing on History in Korea. Second, It is centered on "korea is illegally occupying Dokdo, against which Japan has been consistently making strong protests" rather than simple historical approach. Thirdly, Their approaches seek to be succeeded the identity and importance of Territory Education to next generation rather than the present solving problem.

  • This study is about the Novel Engineering(NE) education program : a class model that combines reading and engineering. By including the process of directly designing and programming a virtual reality using CospacesEdu (a VR authoring tool for the NE class), the effects of the educational program on learners' STEAM literacy and Learning immersion are demonstrated. Moreover, the subject of this education is Dokdo in South Korea. As a result, the average of STEAM literacy is increased, and a significant change is confirmed statistically in Convergence. Learning immersion shows significant improvement in Challenges-skills balance. On the other hand, some students experience difficulties due to the long research stages, from reading a book to researching for information to designing VR and rewriting a story with the collected information. In conclusion, this study will help generalise other education using NE, and this developed program will be a reference that would suggest a new way of teaching.

  • Two specimens (1770~1850 mm disc width) of Mobula thurstoni, belonging to the family Myliobatidae, order Myliobatiformes, were first collected from the central coast of the Southern Sea of Korea in September 2018. This species is characterized by an anterior margin of disc with double curvature, a white-tipped dorsal fin, and the absence of a caudal spine. This species is morphologically similar to Mobula kuhlii, but has an anterior margin of pectoral fins with a double curvature and the dorsal coloration is bluish black rather than white. In addition, M. thurstoni was well distinguished from M. kuhlii as determined by mitochondrial DNA 16S rRNA sequences with genetic distances ranging from 0.030 to 0.069. The Korean name 'Mae-kkeun-kko-li-jwi-ga-o-li' is proposed for the species M. thurstoni.

  • We extensively observed macroalgal assemblages of species composition and biomass of summer benthic marine algae at Dokdo in the East sea of Korea. A total of 102 species (12 Chlorophyta, 36 Phaeophyta, and 54 Rhodophyta) were identified in quadrats and were analysed qualitatively to define the variation patterns. Biomass in dry weight according to various depths ranged between 146.0 to 764.2 g m-2 at study sites. Mean biomass at the investigated sites was greater in the 10m depth range than in the 5 and 15m depths at Dongdo. The flora could be classified into six functional groups: coarsely branched form (51.0%), filamentous form (17.7%), thick leather form (15.7%), sheet form (5.9%), jointed calcareous form (4.9%) and crustose form (4.9%). The R/P, C/P and (R+C)/P value were 1.67, 0.50 and 2.17, respectively. The number of marine algae species and the biomass in Dokdo area were markedly reduced as compared with those in the previous studies. This result suggests possible future changes in the algal vegetation, considering coastal marine environment of this area.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine and better understand student's perception of territory in the deterritorialized world. Students' sketch maps were analyzed to investigate the way of which they recognized the form of national territory, border, geographic location, and neighboring countries. In addition, students' values, attitudes, and affection for their homeland and other countries were observed through the awareness of North Korea, DMZ, and Dok-do island. Scrutinizing students' sketch maps and follow-up interviews provided much more in-depth context for understanding students' narratives about territorial identity than did the analysis of structured surveys since they can freely draw and sketch their cognition. A qualitative data analysis builded a code list with 67 codes generated from 626 quotations. These data were exported to CSV format to elicit and evaluate differential variances of territorial identity along with student's Social Studies score and Grade Point Average for inferential statistics and quantitative data analysis using SPSS. Based on the results of data analysis and discussion, some suggestions to build a model of territorial education and to develop teaching and learning materials in the domain of geography education were provided.

  • This study is to analyze on territorial education described in geography textbooks in Korea and Japan. The following is the result that shows similarities and differences of the geography textbooks when it comes to territorial education. Korea and Japan have a contrasting territorial background. However, both countries start their territorial education by learning the location and shape of their country. Japanese geography textbooks focus on what people in the world think of Japan, but in case of Korea, the geography textbooks focus on how Koreans look at the world. In short, the territorial education in Japan try to emphasize Japan from the view point of the world. The next common ground is that the two countries provide territorial models in their geography textbooks in order to increase understanding. However, the Japanese students are provided with these territory models much earlier than Korean students and these models help them visualize and solidify their concept of territory. And, the two countries both put great importance on teaching territorial sea. In Japan, they try to include EEZ(Exclusive Economic Zone) in their territory. Considering these facts, it can be concluded that Japan is enlarging their concept of national territory as maritime territory. Lastly, after learning of territory the two countries both treat on territorial problems. But Korea treats passively territorial problem as such Dokdo, but Japan treats actively their territorial problems. Like that, the contents of territorial education described in geography textbooks in Korea and Japan are similar in terms of selection, but differ in quality in terms of organization. Therefore, future territorial education in Korea will be actively and successively done through succession and sequence of geography curriculum.
