  • In this paper, electroencephalographic (EEG) signal of one among subjects measured biosignal with visual evoked stimuli inducing the concentration was analyzed to detect the changes in the attention status during attention task fulfillment from January to February, 2011. The independent component analysis (ICA) was applied to EEG signals to isolate the attention related innate source signal within the brain and Electroculogram (EOG) artifact from measured EEG signals at the scalp. The consecutive accumulation of short time Fourier transformed (STFT) attention source signal with excluded EOG artifact can enhance the regular depiction of EPOCH graph and spectral color map representing time-varying pattern. The extracted attention indices associated with somatosensory rhythm (SMR: 12-15 Hz), and theta wave (4-7 Hz) increase marginally over time. Throughout experimental observation, the ICA with STFT can be used for the assessment of participants' status of attention.

  • Inquiry has been emphasized in science classrooms, but the problems shown in the inquiry are somewhat different with ones that students usually meet and experience in everyday life. The purpose of this study is to investigate how attitudes toward the task and thinking skills affect students' problem solving process, especially, the way of creating a problem space and elaborating problem solving strategies when they have little schema. The difference in students' problem solving strategies of Lego Robotics class, one of the summer programs for $4^{th}-6^{th}$ grade gifted students, which is new to them, was investigated. The results are as follows: (1) The difference in attitudes toward the task, or selection and identification of the missions, and the perception of operators, affected creating a different problem space. (2) Different level of thinking skills, or analytical and flexible thinking, efficient elaborative skill, and application of schema affected a different level of elaboration of the problem space and resulted in asuccess rate of problem solving. (3) Different initial problem space resulted in different problem solving strategies. But without thinking skills, students could not elaborate problem solving strategies efficiently. Several instructional recommendations to promote scientific inquiry were suggested based on the results.

  • We investigated the implicit representations of success/failure associated with mother in male and female college students. In study 1, participants were presented 'mother' or 'basket' as a context prime and 'success' or 'failure' related words as second primes for 100ms, and were asked to make lexical decisions about 'accept' or 'reject' related words and non-words after 150 ms (SOA 250ms). Results revealed that lexical decision times on the mother condition were more rapid than the ones on the basket condition, and lexical decision times on the acceptance condition were more rapid than the ones on the rejection condition, and female participants showed shorter times than male students did. In study 2, we divided participants into four groups by gender and attachment style, Results showed that the interaction between success/failure and acceptance/rejection was statistically significant, that is, quickest lexical decision times on the success-acceptance condition, and slowed times on failure-acceptance, failure-rejection, and success-rejection condition in order. On the other hand, no significant differences between high and low attachment group were found in males, but significant three-way interactions were found in females. In highly attached females, lexical decision times in success-acceptance condition were not differed from ones in success-rejection condition, and slowed times in failure-rejection condition. Low attached females showed very rapid times in success-acceptance condition, but very slow times in success-rejection condition. The results were discussed in terms of self-positivity and success/failure scheme depending on gender and attachment styles.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze trilogy by means of semiotics. trilogy constructs a story as a whole while each piece delivers a concluded ending. This study used 'modele actantiel' and 'carre semiotique' of Greimas in order to clarify not only the meaning structure but also the course of narrative of . is a compelling story which reverses the fairy tale of a beautiful princess and a heroic prince. Each piece of the trilogy unfolds as following; (1)ls the love of a princess and an ogre possible? (2)Can the marriage of the couple get confirmed? (3)Can Shrek be free again? The repeated meaning structure of trilogy is the binary opposition of nature versus culture, and the narrative course forms the meaning square on the basis of the opposition. Human culture represented by the lord Farquaad and Duloc castle signifies cleanness, order, complex, anxiety, paranoia, authoritarian, and violent. On the contrary, Nature represented by Shrek and the swamp signifies barbarity, freedom, confident, maturity, unstrained, and humar. The meaning of Shrek series is generated by the structure of the basic discrimination of culture versus nature. However, as story twists the bias and fixed idea, the meaning structure of Shrek shows a unique relationship of culture and nature. Although Shrek, an ogre, lives alone in a swamp because of the bias of human world, he is depicted as self-sufficient, comfort, and broad-minded. On the basis of this meaning structure, Shrek is not a story that an ogre(nature) strives to enter the human culture, nor a story that nature wins a victory at the confrontation between culture and nature, but a story that human(culture) and ogre(nature) overcome their fixed ideas through the transition from culture to nature and vice versa.

  • In this research, 'Construction Technology and Environment' units in 12 different technology home economics textbooks for 1st~3rd year middle school students under the 2009 Revised Educational Curriculum and the content system of textbooks were analyzed based on Reigeluth's elaboration theory, and the following conclusions were derived. First, each of the 12 different textbooks presented the elaboration process by procedural method and composed the content system. Second, the 'Construction Technology and Environment' unit presented many 'Thought Opening' as the systematization strategy of advance learning ability, and 'Unit Summary' presented at the end of the unit as the use strategy of the summarizer was presented preponderantly. In addition, 'Learning Objective' that represents the degree of achievement of the students after learning the unit was presented most as the use strategy of the synthesizer although there are differences in terms. In all of the textbooks, 'Figure,' 'Table,' 'Diagram', and 'Explanation of Terms' were used, and particularly, in the vitalizer strategy of the cognitive strategy, overwhelmingly greater number of 'Figure's, compared with all other elements, were presented as the vitalizer strategy of cognitive strategy. Finally, 'Compensatory Learning,' and 'In-depth Study' were presented as the learner control strategy in each of the 4 different textbooks, and there was one textbook that presents the term 'Supplement Reinforcement' in which compensatory learning and in-depth learning were integrated. Third, the metaphor utilization strategy among the 7 teaching strategies of the elaboration theory was hardly used in the composition items in units of textbooks.

  • This purpose of this study was to address the issue of forgiving unforgivable crimes, inevitably raised in Paul Ricoeur's thoughts. He explores the possibility of righteous historical representation of tragic events in Western history. Being aware of injustices of amnesty indiscriminately extended by the government, he studied the process through in which a genuine pardon should unfold before granting amnesty. He believes that this process called the "odyssey of forgiveness" presupposes the process of "imputability," in which the perpetrator should acknowledge his/her wrongdoing as his/her act and take reasonable responsibilities for it in a modest position. However, such acknowledgement of wrongdoing cannot be any reason for the victim to necessarily grant forgiveness to the perpetrator. According to him, forgiveness is a gift and the power of love enabled by a complete forgiver only. The initiative of forgiveness is attributable to the forgiver only. To never relinquish tension between love and justice in the forgiving process, he devises a way of planning an equation of forgiveness in a vertical scheme. Finally, he explains the process of requesting and granting forgiveness in a form of a righteous historical representation against the oblivion of past tragic events. He contends that this event of forgiveness promises a new life and a new era to all seeking and granting forgiveness, and that write a righteous history in eschatological hope.

  • This study employs Lacan's psychoanalytic approach to reinterpret the images of others and teachers that influence the process of self-formation within the teaching profession as students enter a university of education Seventy-four first- and second-year students majoring in science education at the College of Education from three regions across the country participated in this study, which was conducted using Lacan's L schematic as a representative theoretical framework. Through qualitative analysis and a word cloud analysis, it was confirmed that the students developed perceptions of the teaching profession based on somewhat fictitious and unrealistic teacher images, while others actively intervened in the process of career decision-making. In addition, although parents or teachers mainly occupied the realm of the Other, it was found that they failed to appropriately fulfill the role of the Other, in that they should have corrected the fictional image of teachers. Accordingly, it is necessary to recognize the limitations of ego-psychological career education that can deepen fixations on distorted self-images and, therefore, seek a new career education and counseling model through a psychoanalytic approach.

  • The database schema is assumed to be stable enough to remain valid even as the modeled environment changes. However, in practice. data models are not nearly as stable as commonly assumed by the database designers. Even though a rich set of schema change operations is provided in current database systems, the users suffer from the problem that schema change usually impacts existing application programs that have been written against the schema. In this paper, we are exploring the possible solutions to overcome this problem of impacts on the application programs. We believe that for continued support of the existing programs on the old schema, the old schema should continue to allow updates and queries, as before. Furthermore, its associated data has to be kept up-to-date. We call this the program independency property of schema change tools. For this property. we devise so-called program independency schema evolution (PISE) methodology. For each of the set of schema change operations in the relational schemas, the sketch of the additional algorithms due to the PISE compliance is presented in order to prove the comprehensiveness and soundness of our PISE methodology.

  • Effects of the dimensionless variables on the heat transport phenomena in the extrusion process of a single screw extruder have been studied numerically. Based on the understanding of the solids conveying related to the geometrical structure and characteristics of the screw, the heat balance equation for the solids conveying zone was established and normalized. The finite volume method and power-law scheme were applied to derive a discretized equation and the equation was solved using the alternating direction iterative method with relaxation. Effects of the dimensionless parameters, Biot and Peclet numbers, that define the heat transfer characteristics of the solids conveying zone have been investigated with respect to the temperature of the feeding zone and the length of the solids conveying zone. As the Biot number is increased, the heat loss by cooling dominates to decrease the temperature of the barrel but it has little effects on the temperature of the solids bed and the length of the solids conveying zone. On the other hand, if the Peclet number is increased, the convection term dominates to decrease the temperature of the solids bed and it results in an increase in the length of the solids conveying zone.

  • In this study we investigated the types of inscriptions representing the concept of atom and molecule in the 9th grade science textbooks developed under the 7th National Curriculum, and analyzed the processes of interpreting those inscriptions on the view of semiotics. The concept of atom and molecule was represented in various ways such as circular diagram, matters of everyday life, ball-and-stick, and STM graphic, etc. We identified two kinds of inscriptions on the basis of the possibilities of handling models: the inscriptions that represent concept of atom and molecule by image; the inscriptions that represent concept of atom and molecule by using specific matters. We analyzed the processes of interpreting inscriptions systematically with a semiotic model that includes ‘structuring processes' and ‘translating processes'. The interpretation of inscriptions representing concept of atom and molecule was a complex process requiring many steps of interpreting works. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
