  • Wooded areas that are a part of school campuses are one type of urban forest. Most schools located in an urban environment make an excellent setting for a forest in terms of location and area. These kinds of wooded spaces also make the city greener and healthier. As a place where students spend a great deal of time, schools can also be a venue for environmental education. The creation of wooded areas in schools currently has focused on the end result only; by ignoring student needs and participation, these areas have not had a significant influence on student environmental education. Previous studies based on questionnaire survey are significant in that they have quantified subjective qualitative data via Likert Scale. There has been, however, a problem in quantifying the more ambiguous subjective data. Therefore, this paper has attempted to investigate those factors that have an influence on student satisfaction with the wooded areas of their school campus using Fuzzy Theory with elementary school students in Gyeongsangbuk-do. A change was observed in terms of the ranking of arithmetic mean values of 'school peculiarity' and 'emotion evolution' and center of gravity, which has adopted Fuzzy Theory, proving that Fuzzy Theory could rationally objectify qualitative data such as human thoughts. In terms of the influential factors on the satisfaction with school forests(regression coefficient), 'school uniqueness(0.159)' was the highest, followed by 'many trees(0.142),' 'importance of nature(0.136)' and 'emotion evolution(0.130).' This paper may therefore be useful as basic data for objective questionnaire surveys and the development of school forests.

  • This study was carried out to provide basic data. his research conducted the survey using face to face survey and board survey during about 2 months from Oct. to Nov. in 2009 for users of Bongje Mt., a small-sized mountain at downtown, and Acha Mt., a big-sized mountain at outskirt so as to compare the differences of using behavior by forms and size of urban forest in living area of Seoul. Characteristics of urban forest users, using behavior, demands and satisfaction of facilities and management and pass pattern were set as research items. The thing in common for using behavior is that both genders of main users were in more than 40s~60s. They showed the highest using rate from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and high rate for using nearly everyday or visiting two or three times per a week. In addition, it's judged that the accessibility from dwelling area to entrance of urban forest in living area is good and satisfaction for the standard of facilities and their management in forest way was relatively low. For the complement and essential facilities, 'sanitary facilities' showed the highest rate. For the differences of using behavior, most of Bongje Mt. users were residents living within a 2km radius (under the standard of walking) and they moved by average 1.3km. And, they preferred short-time activities of about 24 minutes. On the other hand, main users of Acha Mt. were residents living within a 4km radius (under the standard of walking) and people of other regions. and 60% of them preferred the passage route taking 3hours half over 6km. Through the survey on using behavior of urban forest in living area of Seoul, with different using form and forest size, introduction of using program for main users or managing method of differentiations for introduced facility's management should be properly applied. Especially, urban forest should be systematically managed like park green as expected that residents's using of urban forest will be increased with the increase of leisure time.

  • This study surveyed three land cover types in Chungju City in Chungcheongbuk Province to check the distribution of cultured bacteria in bio-aerosols according to land cover type. It was possible to compare and analyze the distribution of bacteria according to microclimatic changes at each measurement point by examining meteorological factors and bio-aerosols according to land cover. The microclimate temperature in each measurement point was 8.7℃ for the urban forest, 10.8℃ for the waterside green area, and 10.2℃ for the urban area, indicating the urban forest had the lowest temperature among the measurement points. The relative humanity was 61.8% fin the urban forest, 59.3% in the waterside green area, and 55.7% in the urban area, indicating that the urban forest was the most humid among the measurement points. The identified bacteria were found to be 43 genera and 99 species. In terms of species diversity of cultured bacteria, 22 genera were found in the waterside green area, 21 genera in the urban forest, and 17 genera in the urban area, 37 species were found in the waterside green area, 31 species in the urban area, and 31 species in the urban forest. Bacillus toyonensis and Pseudarthrobacter oxydan were the species present in all three types of measurement sites, and Herbiconiux flava was confirmed to inhabit green areas such as urban forests and waterside green areas. The analysis result of the bacterial concentration according to the microclimatic environment in each measurement point was 333 CFU/m3 in the urban forest, 287 CFU/m3, in the waterside green area, and 173 CFU/m3 in the downtown area. The relative humidity and wind speed were analyzed to show a similar trend as the concentration. This study is expected to provide basic data for healthy urban management and green area creation by identifying the distribution of cultured bacteria in bio-aerosols according to land cover type and comparing and analyzing the traits of bio-aerosol in each measurement point.

  • Aedes albopictus, a common species in the Republic of Korea, is internationally known as a major vector for various diseases, and it is well-adapted to urban environments. Recent insect outbreaks in urban areas, attributed to climate change and urban heat islands, have increased the necessity of researching the effects on mosquito populations. This study analyzed climate data from 25 Automatic Weather System (AWS) stations in Seoul, identifying urban areas with pronounced heat island effects and suburban areas with milder effects. Nine urban heat island conditions were established based on this analysis, under which the hatching rates of Ae. albopictus were examined. The results revealed an increase in hatching rates correlating with the intensity of the urban heat island effect. Regression analysis further indicated that this trend accelerates as the strength of the heat island effect increases. This study suggests that temperature variations resulting from urban heat island phenomena can significantly influence the hatching rates of Ae. albopictus.

  • Seasonal variability of water quality in the upland headwater streams in ten forested catchments (37.0~209.0 ha) was examined from April to November 2021. Here, seven physicochemical parameters were analyzed including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (T-N), total phosphorous (T-P), and BOD/TOC. The parameters were compared with those of lowerland rivers as middle and lower reaches within a watershed. The pH showed was low (6.4~6.9) during all the seasons, however, BOD and BOD/TOC in the fall season were 2-fold higher than in the spring and summer seasons. Based on environmental standards, the water quality level revealed that the upland headwater streams maintained the purity and cleanliness of water except for pH in the summer season. BOD/TOC of all the seasons and BOD of the fall season in the upland headwater streams were higher than that in the lowerland rivers, whereas the rest of the physicochemical parameters in the upland headwater streams were lower than that in the lowerland rivers. Additionally, the water quality level maintained the purity and cleanliness of water as "Good" in two reaches. The unique aspects of our study design enabled us to draw inferences about water quality characteristics with temporal and spatial analysis in upland headwater streams. This design will be useful for the long-term strategy of effective water quality management for integrated upland headwater streams and lowerland rivers within a watershed.
