  • The purpose of this study is to diagnose the current status of alternative materials in Korea and to suggest directions and goals for the development of alternative materials. The comprehensive list of national alternative materials and the list of popular and new books were analyzed using the collection evaluation method. Results first the percentage of alternative material collections based on the popular book list for 10 years is 90.1%. The production rate of alternative materials is low in the subjects of 'Language', 'Art' and 'Technology and Science'. Most of the service formats were 'text only daisy'. Second, the CCHR(Common Collection Holding Ratio) and CUI(Collection Uniqueness index) of alternative materials were analyzed using the union catalog. Libraries with a large volume of books have a high proportion of CCHR and CUI. Topics with the highest CCHR are 'Literature' and 'Social Science'. The subjects with the highest collection uniqueness index are 'religion', 'art', and 'language'. Third, the replacement ratio of new books for 3 years is 5.09%. During the same period, the average book purchase rate of public libraries was 8.83%. The average book purchase rate in public libraries is 8.83%, and it is necessary to increase the collection rate of alternative materials based on this ratio.

In conclusion, first, "Dongyeopyengo" was compiled with contents originated from "Sinjungdonggukyeojisungnam(新增東國輿地勝覽)" removed, under the reign of King Sunjo(純祖, 1800~1834). Second, mostly under the reign of King Sunjo, "Dongyeopyengo" has gone through proofreading and adding process based on information from "Donggukmooneonbigo (東國文獻備考)". Third, under the reign of King Heonjong(憲宗, 1834~1849), proofreading and adding work was performed based on various materials including "Jungjeongnamhanji(重訂南漢志)". Fourth, the compiler of "Dongyeopyengo" is surely Kim Jeong-ho(金正浩), considering documentations on the transfer of central city of Yangju (楊州) and the overall tendency found in geography book compilation. "Dongyeopyengo" is an important documentation that depicts the process of geography books that proceeded in the early years of his life as the greatest geographer in Korea, and it holds academic values in that it helps us to understand the life of Kim Jeong-ho prior to 1834, to which people has not paid much attention due to the lack of material and documents.

  • This study analyzed the process of multimedia services and indexed the core quality characteristics through the tools employed in 'Define' and 'Measure' steps of the 6 Sigma DMAIC methodology. To achieve the goal, as a case study of 'S' University Central Library, first, brainstorming technique was used to tap the librarians, second, interview with the half-time student workers, third, user's opinion on homepage was analyzed and lastly, the interview with the users. This study also drew some potential causal factors which would likely to affect the multimedia service using Process Map and C&E Diagram. Those factors were prioritized using X-Y matrix and Pareto Chart. This study revealed 14 factors affecting multimedia services: 'presence/absence of the persons who are in charge of selection', 'cycle of selection materials', 'presence/absence of seperated multimedia room', 'materials arrangement method', 'notification of popular materials', 'notification of documents arrivals', 'methods of noticing new arrivals', 'methods of ordering materials', 'cycle of checking order status', 'types of persons requesting materials', 'methods of requesting materials', 'checking of the status of the returned materials', 'methods of noticing materials in housed', and 'methods of ways to return overdue materials'.

  • By the 1990s, Database Online Searching and CD-ROM Searching have been used universally in libraries. Due to their ease of use and facilitation, it is believed that such new media searching will produce more benefits than the usual printed materials. Furthermore, from the library management's point view, the new media searching's ability to minimize holding space will be another example of the advantage. The new media searching will have ever the printed materials. However, since it Is necessary to have an objective appraisal of the cost effectiveness in the implementation and the design of the new media system, it will be compared the new media searching with the conventional searching by using printed materials at the KIEP Library and Data Bank.

  • In this study, we propose an approach of building a portal site that can offer integrated services for textbook through special libraries For this purpose, we analyzed previous related studies and investigated textbook portal construction sites domestically and abroad. Based on this research, we developed survey questions and conducted a survey targeting users of textbook libraries. As a result, the following projects are required for creating a textbook library: a comprehensive list of textbooks and other content construction, digitization projects of library holdings, collection and delivery of various textbook-related reference books, building a textbook database by topic, collecting and providing textbook-related research publications, a cooperation network with textbook-related organizations, and active promotion of portal sites.

While teaching at universities after obtaining a master's degree in library science from Yonsei University, he published 49 academic articles and 7 edited and authored books. It is highly regarded that he was the first scholar to chronologically write the history of libraries in Korea. In 1973, he transferred to Harvard University's Yenching Library as a Korean studies cataloging librarian, and until his retirement in 1991, he cataloged East Asian classical texts and Korean books at Harvard's Yenching Library and supported the research of professors there. • The purpose of this study is to describe the trends and contents of literature in green library and to suggest the research direction on green library. Earlier studies focus on the green library architecture and necessity, after then green library management studies have proliferated. Green library architecture studies have emphasized on 'energy and atmosphere' and 'indoor environmental quality' based upon 5 categories of LEED evaluation system. Green library management studies have focused on library resources recycling and utilizing energy through effective management of library collection. Based on the analysis of literature, five research directions are suggested, such as the number of libraries in an area, library shelf position and space, library space program, collection ratio for library storage, and user studies.
