A Study on the Development of Conceptualization Model for Reading, Information, ICT, and Digital Literacy (독서·정보·ICT·디지털 리터러시의 개념화 모델 개발 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop conceptualization models of reading, information, ICT, and digital literacy through conceptual differences of these literacy by reviewing and defining the concepts of literacy as well as reading, information, ICT, and digital literacy. Computer literacy has emerged as a concept that explains the phenomenon of contemporary social, cultural, and information technology development, and since then, computer literacy has since changed to IT, ICT literacy, and digital literacy. As a result of the study, a conceptualization model of the reading, information, ICT, and digital literacy was developed. In this model, these literacy whose terms have changed according to the technological development of media, have been classified as medium-centered literacy. And reading and information literacy that focuses on the cognitive process of understanding, utilizing, and evaluating texts and information is categorized as process-oriented literacy. In the digital environment, reading and information literacy is a core competence to critically think and evaluate the texts that are on media, and further research is needed to reduce the reading and the information gap among readers.

Information Poverty Viewed Through the Families of Children With Developmental Disabilities (발달장애아 가족의 정보빈곤 양상에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to portray the phenomena of information poverty of the families of children with developmental disabilities. The focus was especially put on investigating their information needs of everyday lives and information-seeking behaviors. The sample group includes six children with developmental disabilities and their families, mainly mothers. The investigation was conducted by the participant observation and in-depth interviews. The study found out that they sought the formal information sources such as medical specialists and special agencies first with which they were not satisfied. As a result, they rather relied on informal information sources. And the information from 'the group of families of children with developmental disabilities' was thought to be the most reliable information for them. In terms of information related behaviors, the strongest information needs were regarding the children's special education, especially to the school education, and they made effort to seek reliable information. They, however, tended to passively treat their personal concerns that are not related to their disabled children. This study found out that their information poverty is in terms of the information environment, information sources and their attitude to information, and that it comes from the external(social) factors as well as internal(individual) ones.

A Quantitative Analysis of Scholarly Monograph Publishing by University Presses in Korea (국내 대학출판부의 학술단행본 출판에 대한 양적 분석)

  • Scholarly monographs have been a main vehicle for knowledge representation and transfer as well as an important research outcome. University presses have long been considered as the last bastion for scholarly monographs that have low commercial prospect. Until now there has not been a systematic data analysis regarding scholarly monograph production by university presses in Korea. In this paper, we collected bibliographic records of university presses' monograph publications between 1950 and 2015 using the National Library of Korea's online catalog system. A total of 21,015 records were used in the analysis. In particular, for monographs published between 2001 and 2015, we categorized them into scholarly monographs and non-scholarly monographs. University presses' publishing showed sharp increase during the 1990's but is in decline after its peak in 2005. University presses seem to have engaged in publishing more non-scholarly monographs than scholarly monographs by a ratio of 6:4. Large university presses in size seem to produce higher proportions of scholarly monographs than smaller presses. In terms of authoring types, single authorship accounts for the highest proportion and on the increase. However, edited books are losing ground as translated books seem to hold steady. Monographs in social sciences have been published more frequently than any other subject areas as there seem to be significant discrepancies among subject areas in terms of the scholarly monograph proportion.
