  • This study illustrates the necessity and feasible process of constructing local collections in public libraries. One of the important responsibilities of public libraries is to collect, preserve, and provide local information in order to enhance the identity of the region and local culture and to maintain and preserve the social memory of the community. However, as the subjects and types of local information are diverse and are owned and scattered by various persons and organizations in the local community, it is difficult to collect materials and build collections. There is, as a result, a lot of confusion in the library field. Focusing on the case of a few public libraries that hold good local collections, this study attempted to add suggestions to build a local collection containing regional history and locality and to promote related services.

  • This study seeks to develop a curriculum operating model for Korean Library and Information Science, based on investigations into LIS curricula at home and abroad. Standard courses that can be applied to this model were also proposed. This study comprehensively analyzed the contents of domestic and foreign curricula and surveyed current librarians in all types of library fields. As a result, this study proposed required courses, core courses, and elective courses. Six required LIS courses are: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Organization, Information Services, Library and Information Center Management, Information Retrieval, and Field Work. • This study analyzed the characteristics of library service users' information seeking behavior based on the grounded theory methodology. After interviewing twelve undergraduate students, the researcher coded the data based on the grounded theory methodology. As a result of the entire coding processes, this study constructed the library service users' information seeking behavior model. According to the model, the following ten factors are important when explaining library service users' information seeking behavior: the information users' environment, other people, users' experiences, recognition of information sources, information provided, memory, a need-creating environment, information gathering, information use, and satisfaction and/or dissatisfaction.

  • This study illustrates the process of the development of founding collection in public libraries. Specifically, this study surveys such cases of ten public libraries recently opened. It also analyzes current laws and standards about library collection and compares the criteria with the ones in various manuals and reports. For the study, supplementary data were also collected through qualitative interviews and brain-storming discussions with public librarians and other regional government officials who were in charge of the library construction project. For the suggestion to improve the quality of such founding collection, the researcher put the emphasis on the construction of collection development policy for the library, on the official collection plan, on the adequate volume of founding collection, and on the strategies for collection programs about regional studies.
