  • The prototype of a library is analysed upon the facts that are generalized and recognized as commonsense. On the extension of the prototype, a digital library is considered. Ultimately the libraries' prototype should be steady at any time. A library which is being a digital library to which the best technology at that time applies, should function as the creator of the value by publishing, circulating, and re-production of the information resources.

  • The cognitive approaches on library and librarianship are being questioned. These are led from what the identity of the librarian is and from what the library is. This revealed that the perception of the library should not be acquired by interpreting its appearances but by interfering its nature. In conclusion, the information service is disclosed virtually as the essence of the library. On realizing the library virtually, even a person could be entitled as the library on the underlying assumption of information service (one-person-library).

  • I have discussed some problems of distortion in reading education. I think we must give careful consideration to the true meaning of reading to overcome the matter. From the position of the readers I have looked into the true meaning or reading and cases of reading programs. I presented the directions for a new reading program.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the essence and directions of the library and information science education in Korea. For this purpose, first, the introduction and development of library and information science education in Korea was examined in this research; Second, the problems in the library field as well as the academic community of library and information science are analyzed; Third, based on these findings, the essence and directions of developing library and information science education are explored. In this research, an attempt was made to figure out the essence of library science education with the focus on libraries as 'the quality as a facility', not as 'a facility itself.' Furthermore, it was emphasized that Korean Library Association should establish the essence of library and information science education, develop the standard program for educating professional librarians, and improve the certification system and educational institutions for librarians by connecting the library field with the academic community of library and information science.

  • The concept of library is newly interpreted and designed under the environment of U-City. The basic notion of the library should not changed its kernel nevertheless, the new technologies like ubiquitous computing services are applied to the library, which functions in terms of information services, continuous learning programs and communities of practice(CoP). The library is fit for any technologies or environments as organism. Actually the library has been shown in terms of new information technologies with the changes of the times. It leads to comprehend the library as its appearance not as it is. The libraries including even cities have evolved toward ubiquitous(computing) environment. On the other words, the libraries have sought ubiquitous at the past, now they are still chasing it.

  • This study is to research quintessence of information service in the libraries by interpreting 'Information' as it is ubiquitous. For the purpose, it investigates and analyzes information behaviors of the libraries in information-cultural history. The meaning of 'ubiquitous' is understood as a practice that everything we need should be inherent in our lives for its usefulness and effectiveness. Information is intrinsic in our lives and the libraries, information management systems, have been evolved by extending the intrinsic value of information, 'ubiquity'. Human being's history results from information behaviors and the meaning of the libraries consists of production, accumulation, organization and distribution of the libraries. It should be recognized that the ultimate purpose of the library services is for their users. Consequently information systems and technological networks in the libraries should be focused on applications and inherence for the purpose. Model studies of the libraries should be developed to user-centered information services that substantialize the interpretation of information, as it is ubiquitous. This study is a trial for defining the quintessence of the libraries. Furthermore, it provides foundation of understanding what the libraries are.

User Education in Academic Libraries : Research Trends and Issues (대학도서관 이용교육 연구의 동향과 논점)

  • User education in academic libraries can be traced back to the beginning of the education for librarianship in late 19th century. Since then, perspectives in library user education and the perceptions of researchers and practitioners have changed due to new technologies. Recent literature in this field illustrates wide variety of concerns and issues of user education in academic libraries. This paper attempts to highlight such issues and perceptions regrading the subject. It suggests that some fundamental features of LIS education require attention. Suggestions are outlined along with the strong recommendations in terms of the importance of critical thinking and reading, user education as a tool of library promotion, and the politics of academic library user education.
