An Algorithm for Identifying the Change of the Current Traffic Congestion Using Historical Traffic Congestion Patterns (과거 교통정체 패턴을 이용한 현재의 교통정체 변화 판별 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we proposed an algorithm for the identification of relieving or worsening current traffic congestion using historic traffic congestion patterns. Historical congestion patterns were placed in an adjacency list. The patterns were constructed to represent spatial and temporal length for status of a congested road. Then, we found information about historical traffic congestions that were similar to today's traffic congestion and will use that information to show how to change traffic congestion in the future. The most similar pattern to current traffic status among the historical patterns corresponded to starting section of current traffic congestion. One of our experiment results had average error when we compared identified changes of the congestion for one of the sections in the congestion road by using our proposal and real traffic status. The average error was 15 minutes. Another result was for the long congestion road consisting of several sections. The average error for this result was within 10 minutes.

  • This study was conducted to investigate that bus information was used as an information of travel speed. To determine the travel speed on the road, bus information and the information collected from the point detector and the interval detection installed were compared. If bus information has the function of traffic information detector, can provide the travel speed information to road users. To this end, the model of recognizing the traffic patterns is necessary. This study used simple moving-average method, simple exponential smoothing method, Double moving average method, Double exponential smoothing method, ARIMA(Autoregressive integrated moving average model) as the existing methods rather than new approach methods. This study suggested the possibility to replace bus information system into other information collection system.

Developing Road Hazard Estimation Algorithms Based on Dynamic and Static Data (동적·정적 자료 기반 도로위험도 산정 알고리즘 개발)

  • This study developed four algorithms and their associated indices that can quantify and qualify road hazards along roadways. Initially, relevant raw data can be collected from commercial vehicles by camera and DTG. Well-processed data, such as potholes, road freezing, and fog, can be generated from the Integrated management system. Road hazard algorithms combine these data with road inventory data in the Data Sharing Platform. Depending on well-processed data, four different road hazard algorithms and their associated indices were developed. To test the algorithms, an experimental plan based on passive DTG attached in probe vehicles was performed at two different test locations. Selection of the test routes was based on historical data. Although there were limitations using random data for commercial vehicles, hazardous roadways sections, such as fog, road freezing, and potholes, were generated based on actual historical data. As a result, no algorithm error was found in the entire test. Because this study provides road hazard information according to a section, not a point, it can be practically helpful to road users as well as road agencies.

Improved Real-Time Variable Speed Limits for a Stable Controlling of the Freeway (안정적인 고속도로 통제를 위한 향상된 실시간 가변 속도 제한)

  • Recently, many researchers have studied the VSL decision method using traffic information in multiple detector zones. However, this method selects incorrect VSL starting points, leading to the selection of the wrong speed control zone and calculation of the wrong VSL, causing traffic congestion. Eventually, the Unstable VSL system causes more congestion on the freeway. This paper proposes an improved VSL algorithm stably operated in multiple detector zones on the Korea highway. The proposed algorithm selects a preliminary VSL start station (VSS) expected to end the congestion using the acceleration of stations. It also determines the VSS at each congestion area. Finally, it calculates the VSL relative to the determined VSS and controls the vehicles that enters the traffic congestion zone. The developed strategy is compared with Real-time Variable Speed Limits for Urban Freeway (RVSL) to test the stability and efficiency of the proposed algorithm. The results show that the proposed algorithm resolves the problems of the existing algorithm, demonstrated by the correct VSS decision and the reduction of total travel time by 1-2 minutes.

  • Travel speed is an important parameter for measuring road traffic and incident detection system. In this paper I suggests a model developed for estimating reliable and accurate average roadway link travel speeds using image processing sensor. This method extracts the vehicles from the video image from CCTV, tracks the moving vehicles using deep neural network, and extracts traffic information such as link travel speeds and volume. The algorithm estimates link travel speeds using a robust data-fusion procedure to provide accurate link travel speeds and traffic information to the public. In the field tests, the new model performed better than existing methods.

  • The C-ARS(Cooperative Automated Roadway System) refers to a road infrastructure system that links automated vehicles with road infrastructure and communicates with each other via V2X communication to support automated vehicles. The purpose of this study is to suggest a performance evaluation method of C-ARS service. This study exemplifies the 'Work zone information service' among I2V service that provide information to automated vehicles in road infrastructure. First, we define the requirements and service scope needed to check the use case analysis and service performance of the service, and propose an evaluation system for performance evaluation of these services. In addition, the evaluation system was used to verify the feasibility of evaluation through the field test of 'Work zone information service'.

A Study on Extraction Method of Hazard Traffic Flow Segment (고속도로 위험 교통류 구간 추출 방안 연구)

  • The number of freeway traffic accidents in Korea is about 4,000 as of 2020, and deaths per traffic accident is about 3.7 times higher than other roads due to non-recurring congestion and high driving speed. Most of the accident types on freeways are side and rear-end collisions, and one of the main factors is hazard traffic flow caused by merge, diverge and accidents. Therefore, the hazard traffic flow, which appears in a continuous flow such as a freeway, can be said to be important information for the driver to prevent accidents. This study tried to classify hazard traffic flows, such as the speed change point and the section where the speed difference by lane, using individual vehicle information. The homogeneous segment of speed was classified using spatial separation based on geohash and space mean speed that can indicate the speed difference of individual vehicles within the same section and the speed deviation between vehicles. As a result, I could extract the diverging influence segment and the hazard traffic flow segment that can provide dangerous segments information of freeways.

  • The variable message sign (VMS) is equipment to improve the efficiency of traffic flow and safety of travel by providing real-time information to road users on traffic, road, weather situation, and traffic control due to construction. The information messages of the letter-based VMS taking up most of the VMS on the general national highways consist of section, travel time in sections, and road control situation. This study devised an improvement plan centered on road users, not road managers-centered existing message-based VMS through an analysis of road users' preference targeting the letter-based VMS operated in the general national highways in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. By presenting the measure for system improvement through which information on unexpected situations that road users prefer the most can be quickly and efficiently provided, this study aims to improve the efficiency of road user-centered VMS traffic information.

Application of Simulation for Road Design Evaluation (도로설계 평가를 위한 3차원 시뮬레이션 적용)

  • Two dimensional road design is connoting danger factor because different point between design standard and driver's reaction. Consequently two dimensional road design is difficult to recognize problem that happen beforehand when before construction. Therefore three dimensional road design that can grasp problem after completion is required. In this study, three dimensional road was designed to evaluate road that is designed. Road designed by Inroad that is road design program. DTM is created using digital map and elevation data. Three dimensional road was designed by integrated DTM of road and topography. Road design evaluation was performed in three dimension. Driving simulation and sight distance assessment were carried out to estimate stability of alignment. Shadow simulation was executed on icy road section for bad section of icy road surface. As a result of evaluation, this study could confirm shape of road after completion. And sight distance could be calculated and visually confirmed. Also, icy road sections were extracted through shadow simulation.
