Effect of Computing Procedure of Average a Daily Air Temperature on Frost Index determination (일평균 대기온도 산정방법이 동결지수 결정에 미치는 영향)

  • 도로의 동상방지층을 설치하기 위하여 동결관입깊이를 산정하며, 동결지수는 대기온도의 강도와 지속시간의 누가영향으로 표시된다. 대기온도는 일평균 대기온도를 사용하며 4개/일 평균(대기온도$_4$)을 사용하는 것이 일반적이지만, 현재 기상청에서 제공하고 있는 일평균 대기온도는 8개/일(대기온도$_8$)를 제공하고 있다. 이러한 일평균 대기온도의 산정하는 방법이 동결지수의 산정결과에 미치는 영향을 확인하기 위하여 한반도 남부지역(동결지수 $350^{\circ}C{\cdot}$일) 미만 6개지역을 저성토부, 절성경계부 및 절토부로 구분하여 15개소에 대하여 현장계측시스템을 구축하였다. 그리고 현장계측 시스템으로부터 얻어진 대기온도를 통하여 동결지수를 산정하여 비교하였다. 동결지수 비교결과 일반적으로 일평균 대기온도$_4$를 사용한 경우가 일평균 대기온도$_8$을 사용하는 경우보다 약 3% 전후 큰 것으로 나타나났으며, 6개 지역의 동결지수를 결정할 때 대기온도$_8$을 사용한 동결지수를 보정할 수 있는 보정식을 제안하였다.

  • Wheel tracking and ravelling tests were conducted on the hot mix crumb rubber modified asphalt concrete usmg waste tire t to evaluate the mechanical prope$\pi$ies in comparison with conventional asphalt concrete. According to the test results, the m modified product, lias superior to the conventional one by 50% in the resistance of permanent deformation and by 15% in the m resistance of dmability. The experimental results should recommend thut the waste tir$\xi$ is positively recycled for asphak concrete.

  • This paper presents the experimental test results on moisture and freeze-thaw resistance of hot mix crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt concrete mixture. To compare the differences in mechanical properties of conventional and CRM asphalt concretes, various tests were conducted under different moisture conditions and freeze-thaw cycles. Marshall mix design was also performed to determine the optimum asphalt contents for the both asphalt concrete mixtures. Test results revealed that the moisture and freeze-thaw resistance of CRM asphalt mixture was superior to the conventional asphalt concrete. As a result, it is considered that the utilization of waste tires in asphalt pavements has the potential of minimizing the damage due to the moisture and freeze-thaw.

  • This study presents a viscoelastic characterization of flexible pavement subjected to moving loads. A series of field tests have been conducted on three pavement sections (A2, A5, and A8) at the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) test road. The effect of vehicle speed on the responses of each test section was investigated at three speeds: 25 km/hr, 50 km/hr, and 80 km/hr. During the test, both longitudinal and lateral strains were measured at the bottom of asphalt layers and in-situ measurements were compared with the results of finite element (FE) analyses. A commercial FE package, ABAQUS was used to model each test section and a step loading approximation has been adopted to simulate the effect a moving vehicle. For viscoelastic analysis, relaxation moduli of asphalt mixtures were obtained from laboratory test. Field responses reveals the strain anisotropy (i.e., discrepancy between longitudinal and lateral strains) and the amplitude of strain normally decreases as the vehicle speed increases. In most cases, lateral strain was smaller than longitudinal strain, and strain reduction was more significant in lateral direction.

  • Various geological structures are found on the slope of Bangnim district in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do, based on the Paleozoic Joseon Supergroup Limestone. The recumbent fold observed on the slope is a very rare geological structure that has not been found in Korea, and has important academic value in exploring the formation process of the Paleozoic geological structures in the Gangwon region. In this study, discussed the geological value of the geological structure observed on the slope of the road, and studied the management method of rockfall problem slopes. The state of development of recumbent folds has conservation value in geological scarcity and specificity. Preservation management measures should be prepared through the protection of slopes and measures to reduce of rockfall risks as geoheritage with an important value in geology science and education. Furthermore, it is expected to be preserved and utilized as a geopark.

Temperature Sensitivity Analysis of TDR Moisture Content Sensor for Road Pavement (도로하부 함수비 계측을 위한 TDR 방식 함수비 센서 온도 민감도 분석)

  • The infrastructure of flexible pavement is composed of aggregate subbase, anti-frost layer, and subgrade. In particular, the subgrade performance is affected by climates such as frost action and precipitation. The method of TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry) sensors to measure moisture contents in subgrade layer has been used in the research. Due to the TDR method using dielectric permitivity of soil and water, the sensors can be affected by the low subgrade temperatures. The air temperatures frequently drops below $-20^{\circ}C$ in the winter in Korea. As a result, it is necessary to estimate the accuracy of the TDR moisture sensors in the range of below zero temperatures. In this study, the subgrade temperatures of lower than $-2^{\circ}C$ were extended to evaluate temperature sensitivity of the TDR moisture sensors. The test results revealed that the moisture contents around the sensors were reduced while those of the upper part of specimen showed a tendency to increase as the specimen surface temperature drops below zero under the volumetric moisture contents(VMC) of 20% and 30%. However, the impact of temperature on the function of the sensor at lower water contents was found to be negligible if any.

An Analysis of Perceptions by Road Construction Engineers on ICEC Framework at the time of System Transition, from Responsibility Supervision to Construction Management (II) - Focused on CM Terminology & ICEC Coordination - (책임감리가 건설사업관리(CM)로 전환시 도입된 역량지수(ICEC)에 대한 도로건설기술자들의 인식 분석(II) - CM 용어와 ICEC 조정을 중심으로 -)

  • This study (II) aims to draw up the future-oriented construction policy recommendations based on the outcomes as a result of a broad research and conducting questionnaire surveys on the arguable issues raised by construction engineers for roads and bridges in the course of previous study (I) implementation. As for the question of "The term 'Construction Management (CM)' which currently is defined in two (2) ways", 45% of respondents have answered that two (2) different types of CM should be unified into one (1) CM type as is the case in most advanced countries. About the question of "The ways to educate the CM professionals", many respondents have preferred to acquire CM professional certificate after receiving education for a certain period of time from private CM training institutions. As for the question of The revised draft that the ICEC grade of special engineers for design, construction and quality control areas shall be "more than 78 points from a more than 75 points by the original draft." 52% of respondents preferred to maintain the original draft. About the question of "The reason why the CM system has not been working well yet." 62% of respondents have answered that the staff members who are in charge of handling public project procurements are concerned about the fact that their roles (or activities) might be deprived as a result of CM adoption. In order for the CM system to be activated, based on the notion that the construction projects must be out soured, the reshuffle of the headquarter organization of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation (MLIT) should be preceded.

A Applicability Study on the Asphalt Concrete Pavement Condition Index in Narrow Regional Roads using Road Crack (도로 균열율을 사용한 소규모 지역 아스팔트 콘크리트 포장상태평가지수의 적정성 검토)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the evaluation criteria of asphalt pavement condition in narrow regional road considering the traffic environment in order to reduce road budget of local governments. In general, narrow regional roads are considered relatively less important because they have low travel speed and low traffic volume of heavy-vehicle. Generally, automatic surveying equipment is used for investigations of pavement condition, but the operating costs are not efficient for the narrow regional roads because the cost is too high. This study presents the pavement condition evaluation index suitable for narrow regional roads. In this study, the pavement condition evaluation index is presented considering the traffic environment of narrow regional roads. The pavement condition were classified into three classes based on the crack measured by visual inspection, and the validity of the pavement condition evaluation index presented through the expert's questionnaire survey was examined. Pavement condition for the narrow regional roads was classified into three grades based on the index values calculated by visual inspection. Expert's surveys were conducted to evaluate the validity of the proposed pavement condition evaluation. The proposed evaluation index shows a high correlation with questionnaire survey result ($R^2=0.88$). The proposed evaluation index which is obtained through visual crack inspection under limited conditions can be applied to narrow regional roads. In addition, it is expected that it will be effective not only for road management but also for road management budget by more economical evaluation method of pavement condition.

  • The result of responsibility supervision system which has been enforced for the last twenty (20) years since January, 1994 is evaluated, and keeps an eye out the process of unification and absorption of the system into the construction management (CM). As a baseline data for this study, the grade framework of construction engineer's ICEC introduced with CM is summarized. In this manuscript, the questionaire survey for CM and ICEC was conducted toward the target group of road field construction engineers and analyzed the outcome of the respondents' answers. 50% of the respondents have answered positively for the question about converting responsibility supervision to CM. 48% of the respondents from construction works field have answered positively for converting responsibility supervision system to CM while 38% of the respondents from engineers of supervision field have answered positively, less positive than the answers from works field engineers. 46% of overall respondents have answered, however, to maintain the present system of 40%, 40% and 20% on the survey to the question asking the opinion on the ways of calculating ICEC to use the rates : 40% of career, 40% of qualification and 20% of academic achievements. However, it appeared that engineers who have comparative advantages with academic achievements and career, and engineers with lower grade qualification demanded higher rate for career.

An Analysis of Maintenance Cost of Preventive Optimized-Rehabilitation Area Method in Asphalt Concrete Pavement (예방적 최소단면 보수공법 적용 아스팔트 도로포장의 유지관리 비용분석)

  • The paper presents the economic analysis of optimized-rehabilitation area method considered as one of the preventive maintenance methods in asphalt concrete pavement. The optimized-rehabilitation area was selected based on the analysis of traffic lane characteristics. The main concept of the selected method was to minimize the maintenance cost. The effective width of traffic lane in this method was 70 cm of each wheel path. According to the traffic survey conducted in this research, more than 95% of vehicles passed within the width of each wheel path. The new preventive optimized-rehabilitation area method showed less maintenance cost than the conventional overlay. In addition, traffic congestions and the user cost can be reduced. The research results revealed that the total maintenance cost was reduced by 35% by using the new method compare to the conventional one.
