  • In this study, A series of fatigue tests have been performed on the fillet welded joints of cover plates in steel plate girders in order to quantitatively assess the fatigue characteristics according to the shapes of cover plates. From the results of fatigue tests, it has been shown that the fatigue strengths were slightly different according to their shapes, but satisfied the fatigue design curves in Korea and other countries. Also, from the results of beachmark tests, it has been confirmed that the points of fatigue crack initiation were closely related to the shapes of weld bead toes, and fatigue cracks simultaneously initiated from several points in weld bead toes have been grown as semi-elliptical surface cracks, and these cracks have been coalesced each other, and grown as through thickness cracks, and finally reached to fracture. Besides, from the results of fracture mechanics approaches, stress gradient factors were the most dominant factors among crack correction factors obtained from the existing equations and finite element analysis, and the fatigue life on fillet welded joints of cover plates could be estimated using the relations between fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor range obtained from finite element analysis.

  • A deep-sea pressure vessel needs to protect the internal electrical equipment from the high external pressure. Thus, the pressure vessel should be designed to be watertight and structurally safe. In this study, a cylindrical-type pressure vessel comprising a hollow cylinder and cover plates at both ends is investigated. For communication between the internal electronic equipment and the external device, holes are bored on the cover plate to install underwater connectors. Considering the type of internal equipment and underwater connector specifications, multiple holes may be required. These holes can affect the structural safety of the pressure vessel cover plate. In this study, the optimum design of the hole arrangement in consideration of the structural safety of the cover plate was performed.

  • This study consists of static and fatigue tests to evaluate the behavior on the field splice joint of longitudinal rib in orthotropic steel deck specimens. Specifically, static and influence surface tests are performed for the stress distribution at the scallop area and high-strength bolt connection of longitudinal rib to examine the existence of handhole cover plate and the effect of eccentric loads. The ultimate strength of the field splice joint of longitudinal rib is obtained. In fatigue tests, cracks are observed at the scallop in the lower level test and the catastrophic failure of longitudinal rib is occurred following the failure of handhole cover plate in the higher level test. This study gives a basis for the better understanding of the field splice joint of longitudinal rib.

  • The simplified method drawing the S-N curves in welding joints of the cover plates, the transverse stiffners and the gusset plates of the plate girders by calculation and its computer program without the direct fatigue tests, was established. And the method was applied to the Young- Dong Great Bridge, the 3 th Han River Bridge and the Kang Chon Bridge. Before this, SS 41, SS 50, SWS 50 and SWS 58 were selected, then the compact tension specimens were made by the use of these materials, the things welded by these materials transversely and the ones longitudinally to the crack propagation direction. The fatigue tests were performed by the use of these 'specimens, and the values of material constants c and m were obtained. By these results the followings were obtained. It was showed that the fatigue: strength in the case of the cover plates was much lower than in the case of other two cases. It was showed that, in the case of the cover plates with the cover plates thicker the fatigue strength was lower, but besides this the fatigue strength was not much influenced by the size of specimens. It was showed that in the difference from this the fatigue strength was sensitively influenced by the values of c and m. It was showed that in accordance with the lower values of c and m the fatigue strength was fairly higher, in accordance with the lower values of m the gradient of the S-N curves was abrupter. It was considered that if such data were accumulated continuously, in the near future the basic pattern used availably in providing the indicater of the fatigue design of the plate girders, and presuming the life-proof of the existing plate girders.

  • This study conducted a static tensile test in order to prevent the lowering of load carrying capacity caused by critical sections made by over bolt holes in the base plate and the cover plate of steel member joints using high-tension bolts. The change of the load carrying capacity of joints was examined by comparison of the maximum load on joint fracture obtained from the tensile test with critical section rate and design strength. According to the results, the rate of decrease in strength was higher when the critical section rate was high, and in particular, decrease in strength was affected much more by critical sections in the base plate than by those in the cover plate. In high-tension bolt joints using over bolt holes for the base plate and the cover plate, load carrying performance was somewhat lower than that in joints using standard bolt holes, but the maximum tensile strength on facture was over 15% higher than design fracture strength. According to the results of this study, the use of over bolt holes in high-tension bolt joints had an insignificant effect on the lowering of load carrying capacity, so the allowance of over bolt holes in the joints of steel members is expected to enhance to the economy and efficiency of the works.

  • Static and fatigue tests were performed to evaluate fatigue strength in scallop at field bolted joints of longitudinal rib and deck plate in orthotropic steel decks. Numerical parametric studies using finite elemtn analysis were also conducted to show the influence of parameters such as length and radius of scallop, and thickness of deckplate on the stress concentration at the scallop. In the low stress level, fatigue tests yielded cracks at the scallop while in the high stress level, catastrophic failure of longitudinal rib occurred following the failure of handhole cover plate. Fatigue strength was compared with JSSC specification and the predicted S-N curves using Shigley and Juvinall methods, and a satisfactory result was obtatined.

  • There can be some variation in the load carrying capacity of high-tension bolt friction joints when oversize bolt holes are made on the base plate and the cover plate. This study performed a static tensile test in order to examine the variation of slip load and slip coefficient according to standard bolt hole and oversize bolt hole in high-tension bolt friction joints. According to the results of the static tensile test, the slip coefficient changed to some degree according to oversize bolt holes on the base plate and the cover plate, but it was somewhat unreasonable to find a pattern in the change. Sliding strength showed a difference of up to 26% between the use of standard bolt holes and the use of oversize bolt holes. Because this exceeds the design sliding strength, however, its effect on the serviceability of joints under service load is insignificant. Thus, if the regulation on oversize bolt holes, which may be inevitable in making steel members, is applied flexibly, we may improve efficiency and economy in the design and construction of structures.
