  • Park Tae-Joon, a pioneer in the Korean steel industry, has greatly influenced the advancement of science and technology as well as the development of the nation's economy. He believed that POSCO, which was a government-owned company, should not only focus on making profits, but also operate for higher state-level purposes. This belief became the basis for founding a general laboratory and a research university, as well as building big science and technology R&D facilities. Park Tae-Joon's efforts to establish a research university and his dedication to the advancement of science education stemmed from his devotion to public welfare. Just like he believed that the steel industry, which is the basis for all other industries, should be promoted at the state-level, he believed that university and basic science should also be promoted at the state-level. Thanks to his philosophy, the Pohang University of Science and Technology has risen beyond just a polytechnic school to become a research university that makes revolutionary science and technology advancements for the nation. The fact that Park Tae-Joon used profits from business to build the university and national research facilities such as the Pohang Light Source also shows that he nurtured pure science with the welfare of the whole nation in mind.

  • Firms initiate philanthropic activities to improve social welfare that is beyond the scope of their responsibility towards society. Forestry activities, among other philanthropic areas, simultaneously improve corporate environment and social performance and provide the opportunity to cooperate for a large number of employees. Firms can effectively contribute to forest conservation with their financial and human resources. To encourage participation of more firms, we need to understand how and why firms engage in such activities. This study aims to explore different types of philanthropic forestry activities that these firms undertake. Corporate philanthropic activities can be categorized as donation, in-house project, or collaboration according to the governance type. We analyzed Yuhan-Kimberly's forestry campaign to investigate how and why the firm engaged in each type. We also propose some practical implications for firms, government, and non-profit organizations to invigorate firm's participation in philanthropic forestry activities.

  • This study reviews strategic CSR, which recently has become a controversial topic, and examines the implications of strategic CSR activities on corporate performance. For this, three hypotheses were set. First we categorize CSR activities into economic, legal·ethical, philanthropic, and social innovation responsibility, and to verify if these CSR activities have positive influences on the performance of Chinese and Korean companies. Second, we explore the moderating effects of globalization between the CSR activities and corporate performance. In addition, CSR activities were separated into traditional and strategic in order, and to determine whether the strategic activities had a more positive influence on corporate performance than traditional CSR activities. For this, a total of 646 surveys (401 from China and 245 from Korea) were collectd from MBA students in China and Korea, and the results were comparatively analyzed.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the effects of triple helix model on the firm innovation, especially focused on the moderating effects of trust in Daegu Gyeongbuk. There are two ways of triple helix interactions in Korea. One is a traditional triple helix interaction in which entrepreneurial universities have a central role. As the other way, such 3rd-sector type organizations as technoparks have a important role in facilitating the triple helix interactions. We collected data from 231 firms located in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. According to the findings, firstly, 3rd-sector type organizations such as technoparks have a positive(+) effect on the firm innovation. But a traditional triple helix interaction has not. Secondly, a 3rd-sector type support has much more positive(+) effects on the firm innovation than a traditional triple helix interaction. Thirdly, the trust has a positive(+) moderating effect on the firm innovation in the two-type of the triple helix interactions. In the conclusion, research implication, limitation of this study, and future directions are suggested.

  • This study investigates the moderating effects of corporate mentoring on the relationship between entrepreneurship and start-up satisfaction. The research was designed to examine a direct relationship between the entrepreneurship on the start-up satisfaction. In addition, indirect impacts of corporate mentoring on the relationship between entrepreneurship and start-up satisfaction. Data was collected by distributing questionnaires through e-mail or direct visit to the participating companies in the Start-up Leading University Project, college start-up clubs, companies in university business incubating centers, and general entrepreneurs in Busan and Gyeongnam areas. Empirical data was then analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 statistical program. The results reveal that such categories as innovation and autonomy in entrepreneurship have a direct positive effect on entrepreneurial satisfaction and the corporate mentoring has a moderating effect only when autonomy has a direct positive effect on start-up satisfaction. It is implied that an improvement of start-up satisfaction may be attained only when mentoring programs are well accepted by entrepreneurs and their workers while working in a free and autonomous environment with a flexible corporate culture. This study may provide the theoretical and practical implications for start-up support organizations such as start-up support groups of Start-Up Leading University Project.
