Estimation of Environmental Effect and Genetic Parameters for The Carcass Traits in Hanwoo (Korean Cattle) (한우 도체형질의 환경효과 및 유전모수의 추정)

  • This study aims to estimate the genetic parameters for carcass traits on Hanwoo of breeding farmhouses using Animal Products Grading Service’s data of 428,812 cattle from 101 slaughterhouses nationwide from 2000 to 2005. Using carcass traits of carcass weight, eye muscle area, backfat thickness, marbling score, meat color and fat color that greatly influence Hanwoo's grade, the effects of carcass year, carcass season, sex and carcass region were estimated. Based upon carcass traits of carcass weight, eye muscle area, backfat thickness, marbling score and meat color that greatly influence Hanwoo’s grade, the heritabilities and genetic parameters were estimated of 17,578 Hanwoo slaughtered in 2005 with existing herdbook, where EM-REML algorithm was used in estimating genetic parameters. The mean and standard deviation of each carcass trait are 321.42±53.62kg, 76.25±10.43cm2, 9.96± 4.14mm, 3.75±2.00, 4.83±0.48 and 2.99±0.40, for carcass weight, eye muscle area, backfat thickness, marbling score, meat color and fat color, respectively. As a result of analysis on the effects of carcass year, the carcass weight, backfat thickness and meat color came out highest as 359.40±0.181, 9.82±0.017 and 4.90±0.002, respectively in 2004. As a result of analysis on the effects of carcass season, the carcass weight and eye muscle area came out highest as 345.88±0.144 and 79.57±0.033 respectively in spring, and the backfat thickness was highest as 8.78±0.013 in winter, and the meat color and fat color slightly came out higher as 4.88±0.002 and 2.96±0.001 in fall, while the marbling score was highest as 3.29±0.006 in summer. The results of the analysis on the effects of sex indicated that the backfat thickness and fat color were highest as 10.53±0.010 and 3.07±0.001 in cow, the carcass weight came out highest in Hanwoo steer as 368.03±0.068kg, the eye muscle area were highest as 82.96±0.042 in bull, and the marbling score was highest as 4.19±0.007 in steer, and the meat color was highest as 4.89±0.001 in cow. A Study on the Repeat Tests for Diagnosis at a Tertiary Hospital in Taegu City (3차진료기관(3次診療機關)과 환자의뢰기관간(患者依賴機關間)의 중복검사(重複檢査))

  • This study was conducted to investigate the repeat test rate for diagnosis at a tertiary hospital for the outpatients who were referred themselves to the hospital by the clinics and other medical facilities. The study population consisted of 498 patients who visited outpatient department of internal medicine, general surgery, orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery in the hospital between March 16 and April 11, 1992. This study was surveyed by the questionnaire about the tests for diagnosis at first level medical facilities, and then, was investigated by the medical record about the tests for diagnosis at a tertiary hospital. The proportion of test among the patients who utilized the first level medical facilities was 20.9% for the X-ray test, 10.6% for the urinalysis, 9.0% for the electrocardiogram, 3.4% for the computer tomogram and 6.4% for the ultrasonogram. At the tertiary hospital, the X-ray test was 45.2%, the liver function test was 24.1%, the urinalysis was 19.1%, and the electrocardiogram was 15.7%. The proportion of patients who possessed results of test for diagnosis at the first level medical facilities was 76.5% for the computer tomogram, and 31.3% for the ultrasonogram. As the repeat test rate between the first level medical facilities and the tertiary hospital, the thyroid function test was the first rank as 71.4%, the second rank was the routine CBC as 67.9%, and the third rank was the X-ray test as 64.4%. But among the patients that brought the result for tests at the first level medical facilities, the repeat test rate was as follow : the routine CBC was 75.0%, the liver function test was 72.1%, and the computer tomogram was 15.4%.

Effects of Supplementing Herbs on Growth Performances, Blood Composition and Diarrhea in Hanwoo Calves (한방제재 첨가급여가 한우송아지의 성장, 혈액성상 및 설사에 미치는 영향)

  • The current study was conducted to determine the effects of herbal supplement on growth performances and diarrhea in Hanwoo calves. Total 24 Hanwoo calves (3 treatments: 8 calves per treatment) were randomly assigned to either Control (no treatment), Treatment 1 (0.3% herb supplement), or Treatment 2 (0.5% herb supplement) diets for 150 days. Total body weight gain and total feed intake per head in Treatment 1 was 142.8 kg and 545.9 kg, respectively, and it was higher (p<0.05) compared to other groups. The blood total cholesterol range was 86.43~97.00 mg/dl, triglycerides 13.26~13.86 mg/dl, GOT 76.97~79.60 mg/dl, GPT 19.54~20.97 mg/dl, WBC 8.75~9.95 k/${\mu}{\ell}$, RBC 10.14~11.91 M/${\mu}{\ell}$, and hemoglobin 10.74~11.20 g/$d{\ell}$, respectively, with no significant (p>0.05) differences among treatments. The blood immunoglobulin G levels were 5.74~6.05 mg/ml which tended to decrease as experimental period extended. Total number of pathogens in feces showed peaks at 1~2 months after the initiation of experiment, and tended to decrease thereafter. Total number of Eimeria spp., E. coli and BVDV in feces showed no significant differences but control group showed higher counts than both treatment groups. During overall period, the incidence of pathogenic diarrhea in calves of 2 treatment groups was much lower than control group calves (C: 24, vs T1: 9, T2: 13 heads), however, it was not significant (p>0.05). In conclusion, supplementation of herbs in Hanwoo calf diets might be beneficial to improve growth performances and prevent diarrhea.

Comparison of Growth Performances and Physico-chemical Characteristics of Hanwoo Bulls and Steers of Different Slaughtering Ages (한우 거세유무 및 도축월령에 따른 비육능력 및 도체의 이화학적 특성 비교)

  • The current study was conducted to compare the growth performance and physico-chemical characteristics of Hanwoo bulls and steers of different slaughtering ages. Thirty-six Hanwoo (average age, 13-mon) were allocated into either a bull or steer group (18 animals/group). Each group was sub-divided into 26-, 28-, and 30-mon-old age groups (six animals/group). Surgical castration was performed in the steer group immediately after the experimental groups were assigned. Growth performance of the animals, as well as carcass characteristics and fatty acid composition of M. longissimus dorsi were determined. Cold carcass weights increased as carcass slaughtering age increased in both Hanwoo bulls and steers (p<0.05). Backfat thickness was thickest (p<0.05) in 28-mon-old Hanwoo bulls and 30-mon-old steer, and the M. longissimus dorsi area was widest (p< 0.05) in 28-mon-old Hanwoo bulls and steers. Marbling score, cooking loss, and water holding capacity (WHC) were higher (p<0.05) in 30-mon-old Hanwoo bulls and steers as slaughtering age increased. The shear force value was highest in 30-mon-old Hanwoo bulls and 26-mon-old Hanwoo steers compared to that in other groups. The unsaturated fatty acid composition in M. longissimus dorsi was significantly (p<0.05) higher in 28- and 30-mon-old Hanwoo bulls and steers than that in other groups. The results suggest that castration, even at late stages of Hanwoo development, improved beef carcass quality grade, and that no difference in beef quality grade had occurred (marbling score and WHC) in 28- and 30-mon-old slaughtering age Hanwoo steers.

Caregivers' adherence factors affecting maintenance treatment in children with well-controlled asthma : A qualitative analysis through in-depth interview (천식 조절 상태 환아의 유지 치료에 대한 보호자 순응 요인: 심층 면담을 통한 질적 분석)

  • Purpose : Good adherence of caregivers is essential for successful health outcomes in the treatment of childhood asthma. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors contributing to good adherence of maintenance treatment in children with well-controlled asthma. Methods : Children with well-controlled asthma being treated with a daily controller for at least 3 months in Korea University Anam Hospital were selected. Their caregivers who had good adherence to maintenance treatment were recruited. Qualitative study through in-depth interviews was conducted with 18 caregivers who agreed to the study. Results : The 18 caregivers (mean age, 40.0 years) consisted of 15 mothers, 2 grandmothers, and 1 father. The resulting consensus were identified and grouped into 2 domains: the caregiver/patient aspect with 8 theme factors and the treatment aspect with 4 theme factors. The main theme factors in the caregiver/patient aspect were enabling participation in physical activities and exercise (77.8%), perceptions regarding asthma and the need for long-term treatment (50.0%), and perceived value of the medications outweighing the risk of side effects (38.9%). The main theme factors in the treatment aspect were trust in the physician (77.8%), general satisfaction with the manner and attitude of the physician (77.8%) and verification of the necessity of further treatment by performing tests (38.9%). Conclusion : Efforts to improve caregivers' adherence to the treatment of childhood asthma must include a range of factors related to both caregiver/patient aspects and treatment aspects. Among all of these factors, it may be most important to establish a physician-caregiver partnership.

Changes in Pood Components of Top Shell, Omphalius pfeifferi capenteri by Thermal Processing at High Temperature (고온가열처리에 의한 바다방석고둥 (Omphalius pfeifferi capenteri)의 식품성분 변화)

  • The top shell, Omphalius pfeifferi capenteri meat vacuum-packed in can (diameter$\times$height, 74.1mm$\times$50.7mm) were heated at 115$^{\circ}C$ up to $F_0$ values of 5 min, 10 min, 15 min and 20 min, and the changes in food components were studied. After 14 days storage at 37$^{\circ}C$ and 55$^{\circ}C$, no growth of microorganism and panelling were recognized from the canned meats which were sterlized at 115$^{\circ}C$ with $F_0$ value of S min and over. In the case of proximate composition of the canned meats, the moisture content decreased with the increase of $F_0$ value, while crude protein increased. The increase of volatile basic nitrogen content, pH and degree of browning and the decrease of mineral, total amino acid, free amino acid, trimethylamine oxide, total creatinine contents and yields were observed during thermal processing, In sensory evaluation on color, texture and taste in the canned meats, no significant difference was observed among a boiled sample and the canned meats heated at re value of 10 min and below. But, in the canned meats heated at $F_0$ value of over 15 min, its sensory scores decreased with the increase of $F_0$ value. From these results, the reasonable $F_0$ value for preparation of the heat-treated top shell meats was in the range of 5$\~$10 min.

Characteristics of Cooked Rice by Adding Grains and Legumes (곡류와 두류를 혼합한 잡곡의 취반 특성)

  • Nutritional compositions of the raw materials, such as well-milled rice, milled upland glutinous rice, milled barley, glutinous millet, SoRiTae, red beans and mung beans were analysed, and cooking characteristics and sensory attributes of mixed cereals were measured. Crude protein and crude fat in SoRiTae were 31.6% and 16.16%, respectively, and the highest among the raw materials. Crude ash was 3~11 times higher and crude fiber was 5~7 times higher in legumes than in grains. Iron content in SoRiTae was the highest as 7.8 mg/100 g, and calcium content was the highest as 71.0 mg/100 g in SoRiTae and mung beans. Phosphorus content was higher in glutinous millet and mung beans, and potassium content was greatly higher in legumes than in grains and the highest as 934 mg/100 g in red beans. Vitamin B$_1$ and B$_2$ contents were higher in legumes than in grains, and niacin content was the highest as 5.51 mg/100 g in mung beans and was 3.77 mg/100 g in glutinous millet. Water uptake of the raw materials increased greatly after 5 min of soaking in water and then stayed at the almost same level. Water uptake was the highest in SoRiTae and decreased in the order of milled barley, milled upland glutinous rice, glutinous millet and well-milled rice. Hardness was the lowest as 142.8 g/cm$^2$ in cooked SoRiTae, and the highest as 206.3 g/cm$^2$ in cooked milled barley compared with 169.4 g/cm$^2$ in cooked well-milled rice. Cooking time increased and hardness of cooked mixed cereals decreased with the increase of water added. Moisture content decreased, while crude protein, crude ash and crude fiber increased as the increase of mixing ratio of SoRiTae and red beans in mixed cereals. Lightness decreased, while red and blue color increased, and hardness increased with the increase of mixing ratio of SoRiTae and red beans. Sensory evaluation showed greater preference in terms of color, roasted nutty, sweet taste and overall acceptance in the cooked mixed cereals with 8 and 10% of SoRiTae and red beans.

Microbial and Quality Changes during Storage of Raw Oyster Treated with High Hydrostatic Pressure (초고압 처리한 생굴의 저장 중 미생물수 및 품질 변화)

  • Raw oysters were treated at $10^{\circ}C$ and $22^{\circ}C/350$ Mpa/15 min, and microbial counts and quality were measured during storage of 14 days at $10^{\circ}C$. Total viable cell count (TVCC) in untreated oyster increased greatly during storage from starting inoculum of $1.6\times10^2\;CFU/mL$, and reached to $5.6\times10^2\;CFU/mL$ after 4 days of storage. TVCC of the pressure-treated was about $10^1\;CFU/mL$ right after high hydrostatic pressure treatment and increased slowly during storage, and about $10^3\;CFU/mL$ even after 7 days of storage. Lactic acid bacteria count (LABC) in the untreated was increased greatly during storage from starting inoculum of $3.3\times10^3\;CFU/mL$ at 3 days of storage and $7.2\times10^4\;CFU/mL$ after 4 days of storage. LABC in the pressure-treated was detected only after 5 days of storage, and about $10^2\;CFU/mL$ after 8 days of storage. The pH of the untreated was 6.19 and decreased gradually during storage, and 5.83 after 4 days of storage. The pH of the pressure-treated showed little change during storage, and 6.07, 6.03 and 5.82 after storage of 4, 8 and 14 days, respectively. Volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) in the untreated was 16.8 mg%, and maintained almost constant until 1 day of storage, and then increased suddenly, and 30.1 mg% after 4 days of storage. VBN of the pressure-treated stayed unchanged during storage, and about 20 and 23 mg% even after 4 and 8 days of storage, respectively. Hunter $L^*,\;a^*\;and\;b^*$ values were increased until 2 days of storage and then showed no change during storage. Demerit score was the lowest in the thawed raw oyster, and then in the increasing order of the pressure-treated (4 day and 8 day storage) and the untreated (4 day storage).

  • Performance tests of a 75-tonf liquid rocket engine turbopump were conducted. The performance of sub-components - two pumps and a turbine - and their power matching were measured and examined firstly near the design speed under the LN2 and kerosene environment. In the real propellant - LOX and kerosene - environment tests, design and off-design performance of turbopump were fully verified in regime of the rocket engine operation. During the off-design performance tests, turbopump running time was set longer than the engine operating time to verify the pump operability and set the pump inlet pressure close to design NPSHr to investigate pump suction capability in parallel. It has been found that developed-turbopump satisfied all of the engine required performances.

The Optimal Turbo Coded V-BLAST Technique in the Adaptive Modulation System corresponding to each MIMO Scheme (적응 변조 시스템에서 각 MIMO 기법에 따른 최적의 터보 부호화된 V-BLAST 기법)

  • In this paper, we propose and analyze the Adaptive Modulation System with optimal Turbo Coded V-BLAST(Vertical-Bell-lab Layered Space-Time) technique that adopts the extrinsic information from MAP (Maximum A Posteriori) Decoder with Iterative Decoding as a priori probability in two decoding procedures of V-BLAST; the ordering and the slicing. Also, we consider and compare the Adaptive Modulation System using conventional Turbo Coded V-BLAST technique that is simply combined V-BLAST with Turbo Coding scheme and the Adaptive Modulation System using conventional Turbo Coded V-BLAST technique that is decoded by the ML (Maximum Likelihood) decoding algorithm. We observe a throughput performance and a complexity. As a result of a performance comparison of each system, it has been proved that the complexity of the proposed decoding algorithm is lower than that of the ML decoding algorithm but is higher than that of the conventional V-BLAST decoding algorithm. however, we can see that the proposed system achieves a better throughput performance than the conventional system in the whole SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) range. And the result shows that the proposed system achieves a throughput performance close to the ML decoded system. Specifically, a simulation shows that the maximum throughput improvement in each MIMO scheme is respectively about 350 kbps, 460 kbps, and 740 kbps compared to the conventional system. It is suggested that the effect of the proposed decoding algorithm accordingly gets higher as the number of system antenna increases.
