Provenance discrimination of sixty four obsidian artifacts found in the Korean Peninsular has been carried out using major elements, minor elements and magnetic properties. Most of obsidians in this study were classified into the subalkaline series based on the contents of $Al_2O_3,\;CaO,\;and\;Na_2O+K_2O$ in samples. Provenance & obsidians were classified into three major groups using major elements and minor elements analyse. This result suggests that there are no correlations among the three groups whose provenances are different. Although the magnetic properties of obsidians do not yield clear groupings according to the archaeological site, the bivariate plot for the magnetic susceptibility and the saturation isothermal remanent magnetization shows a rough correlation with the results of major and minor elements analyses.
The stone implements from the Unjeonri relic sites were studied on the basis of petrology, geochemistry and archaeogeological interpretations. Magnetic susceptibility (MS) of the stone implements were mainly lest than 0.5 $(10^{-3}\;SI\;unit)$, however, stone axe of syenitic rock (2.37), stone axe of schist (0.19) and stone knife of slate (0.11) showed different from the some measured rocks of an outcrop. Geochemical evolution trend of both a stone implement and the surface rock were identical when it a normalization to use the behavior, enrichment, compatibility and incompatibility of the elements. But, some rocks of a axe (schist), a knife (slate), a arrowhead (shale) could not confirm typical occurrence and the distribution area within the Unjeonri site and a radius 10 km. In the Unjeonri site, the stone implements suggest that coexisting two types as domestic- and foreign-type lithic artifacts.
Geochemical and physical investigations such as ${\delta}^{13}C$ isotope ratio, carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, magnetic susceptibility (MS), and particle size analyses were carried out on the estuarine tidal flat sediments from the west coast of Korea in order to reconstruct the East Asian summer monsoon variability during the late Pleistocene and Holocene Our results indicated that the summer monsoon probably peaked around 7,700-7,800 yr BP and then started to decline about 7,400 yr BP in the Korean peninsular, and that the monsoon was relatively weak between 24,000-24,500 yr BP but relatively strong between 18,500-19,500 yr BP during the Last Glacial Maximum. Our estuarine geochemical data have proven to be valuable as a new proxy for detecting the shifts in monsoon strength. This new evidence will be helpful, especially for Korean paleoenvironmental studies with few proxy data archives.
The magnetic record of loess deposits may be one of the most detailed and useful records of Quatermary climate change on the continents. Stratigraphic variations of magnetic parameters define alternating zones of high and low concentrations of magnetic minerals. All the concentration-sensitive magnetic parameters show an increase within the interstadial Gilman Canyon Formation and interglacial Brady soil and a systematic decrease within the Wisconsinan Peoria loess. The influence of climate change on magnetic records is confirmed by a high correlation between the magnetic parameters and biological proxies. Rock magnetic data appear to be better correlated with temperature-sensitive biological proxies than does a precipitation-sensitive index such as the aridity index derived from opal phytoliths. Simultaneous, higher resolution sampling of magnetic and biological proxies proved to be a better sampling tactic, and enhanced the feasibility of rock magnetic parameters as independent climate proxies.
Paleosol layers lying on top of the terrace in Jeongdongjin area appear to have been deposited under generally well-drained condition with periodic waterlogging. From a 4.5m-long profile observed, a total of 6 stratigraphic units were identified. Grain-size analysis indicates the dominance of silty and clay materials with some portions with high sand content. Major mineralogical elements are quartz, feldspar, mica and chlorite. Geo-chemical composition shows little change throughout the stratigraphy with some fluctuation in chemical weathering index. Marked increase in magnetic susceptibility is recognizable where stratigraphic unit changes. Soil- wedge layer is developed around 50cm below the surface with concentration of grains of AT tephra (c. 25,000 BP). An OSL date of c. 110,000 BP was obtained from a sand layer lying below the paleosol.
A fuzzy logic based data integration was applied for geothermal potential mapping in Jeju Island. Several data sets, such as geological map, the density of drainage system, the distribution density of cinder cones, density of lineaments, aerial survey map for total magnetic intensity and total gamma ray, were collected as thematic map for the integration. Fuzzy membership function for all thematic maps were compared to the locations of the spa, which were used as ground-truth control points. The older geology, the lower density of drainage, cinder cones and lineaments, and the lower intensity of magnetic and gamma ray were showed the higher fuzzy membership function values, respectively. After integrating all thematic maps, the results of gamma operator with the gamma value of 0.75 was the highest success rate, and new geothermal potential zone is prospected in western north part of Jeju Island.

This study aims to investigate the formation and sedimentary environment including formative period, grain composition and climate change from loess-paleosol sequence deposited on a gravel bed of river terrace in the Jincheon Basin, Chungbuk Province. The Jincheon section consists downward of a surface layer, loess-paleosol sequence, transitional layer I, transitional layer II and gravel bed. It can be suggested from the OSL age dating that the sequence was deposited during MIS 6 to 4. The sequence can be divided into four horizons based on the variation in the magnetic susceptibility values. Grain size analysis reveals that the sequence indicates similar properties of grain size to loess deposits in Korea and especially, the Y values in the sequence are lower than those in the loess and paleosol horizons in the Chinese Loess Plateau and similar to those in the Red Clay in the Chinese Loess Plateau and Xiashu loess in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. These Y values in the sequence can be attributed to the remote source and/or experience of intensive weathering process after deposition in the Korean Peninsula.
Detailed geological mapping, petrographic study, analyses of geochemistry and magnetic susceptibility, and K-Ar dating were carried out in order to determine the origin, age, and stratigraphic implications of granitic rock fragments in the pyroclastic rocks, SE Jinhae city, southern part of the Gyeongsang Basin. As a result, it was found that the area is composed of volcanics and tuffaceous sediments of the Yucheon Group, Bulguksa granites, pyroclastics bearing granitic rock fragments, $basalt{\sim}basaltic$ andesite, and rhyolite in ascending stratigraphic order. The granitic rock fragments in the pyroclastic rocks are divided into granodiorite and biotite granite, which have approximately the same characteristics as the granodiorite and the biotite granite of the Bulguksa granites, respectively, in and around the study area including color, grain size, mineral composition, texture (perthitic and micrographic textures), intensity of magnetic susceptibility (magnetite series), and geochemical features (calc-alkaline series and REE pattern). This leads to the conclusion that the rock fragments originated from the late Cretaceous Bulguksa granites abundantly distributed in and around the study area, but not from the basement rocks of the Yeongnam massif or the Jurassic granites. Based on relative and absolute ages of various rocks in the study area, the pyroclastics bearing granitic rock fragments are interpreted to have erupted between 52 and 16 Ma, i.e. during the Eocene and early Miocene. These results indicate that the various volcanisms, acidic to basic in composition, occurred after the intrusion of the Bulguksa granites, contrary to the general stratigraphy of the Gyeongsang Basin. Very detailed and cautious mapping together with relative and absolute age determinations are, thus, necessary in order to establish reliable stratigraphy of the Yucheon Group in other areas of the Gyeongsang Basin.
To understand human activity in the past, the information about past environmental change including geomorphological and climatic conditions is essential and this can be traced by using age dating and geochemical analysis of sediments from the prehistoric sites. The sedimentary sequence of Seokgwan-dong Paleolithic Site located in Seoul was 5m long unconsolidated sediments and consists of lower part bedrock weathering sediments, slope deposits and upper-part fluvial deposits. In this study, upper part sediments were used to reconstruct past environmental change through age dating and various physical and chemical analyses including grain size, magnetic susceptibility and mineral and elements. The fluvial sediments can be divided into 4 units including three organic layers. Grain size analysis results showed that the sediments were very poorly sorted with fining upward features. Magnetic susceptibility was relatively high in the organic layers, indicating environmental changes causing mineral composition change at that times. The mineral and major element composition are similar to Jurassic biotite granite which mainly consists of quartz, K-feldspar, biotite and muscovite. The radiocarbon age of $14,240{\pm}80yr$ BP was obtained from the lower most organic layer of Unit III(O), suggesting that the fluvial sediments formed at least from the early stage of deglacial period after the end of Last Glacial Maximum. Subsequent wet and warm climates and resultant fluvial process including slope sedimentation during the Holocene may have been responsible for the sedimentary sequence in Seokgwan-dong paleolithic site and surrounding area. The observed organic layers suggests frequent wetland occurrence combined with natural levee changes in this area.
We present petrography, mode and chemistry data for Fe-Ti oxide minerals from the Mesozoic granitoids in South Korea. Magnetites from the Daebo Uurassic) granites are nearly pure $Fe_3O_4$, while those from the Bulgugsa (Cretaceous) granites contain considerable amounts of Mn and Ti. This is probably related to rapid cooling of the Bulgugsa granites compared with slow cooling of Daebo granites, which is supported by geologic relations and hornblende geobarometry results of Cho and Kwon (1994) on the emplacement depth for these granites. The composition of ilmenite does not shew appreciable difference between the Daebo and Bulgugsa granites. However, $Fe_2O_3$ contents are higher for the ilmenites coexisting with magnetite than for those without magnetite. In the temperature vs. oxygen fugacity diagram, the Bulgugsa granites plot near Ni-NiO and QFM buffer curves, although only two samples show greater than the granite solidus temperature. The mode data suggest that both magnetite- and ilmenite-series exist in Daebo and Bulgusa granites from the Kyonggi massif, Ogcheon belt and Youngnam massif, while only magnetite-series exists in Bulgugsa granites from the Kyongsang basin. Many ilmenite-series granites occur in the Ogcheon belt, which might be related to assimilation of carboniferous sediments in the belt. The proportion (44 : 56) between ilmenite- and magnetite-series for the Daebo granites is significantly different from that of Ishihara et al. (1981) who showed, using magnetic susceptibility data, predominance of ilmenite-series (more than 70%) for the Daebo granites, which can be mainly attributed to preference in sampling and to wrong assignment of age for some plutons. We also found magnetite in weakly-magnetized Kanghwa granite which was formerly classified as ilmenite-series by Ishihara et al. (1981). The proportion of ilmenite-series increases in the order of hornblende biotite granite, biotite granite and two mica granite. We conclude from these observations that the ilmeniteseries granites might have originated from contamination of carboniferous crustal material and/or such source material.
