Twelve caregivers were assigned to either a treatment group or a control group. The treatment group intervention consisted of 8 weekly, 2-hour sessions which included education, peer and professional support, individual counselling. Wilcoxon test of the pretest and posttest scores of the two groups showed that those in the treatment program experienced significant decrease in caregiving burden and loneliness compared with caregivers who received no intervention. They also experienced increase in self-esteem, self-efficacy in dealing with caregiving tasks, satisfaction with a relationship with the care-receiver, emotional support. Most of these intervention effects were maintained in the 3-month follow-up measurement except loneliness and the caregiver-carereceiver relationship. Caregivers in the treatment group showed overall satisfaction with the program and willingness to continue to attend in the interventions. Based on these findings, implications for social work practice including self-help groups, psychotherapy for the caregivers, expanding social work intervention for the family caregivers of the older persons were discussed.

  • Since the 1960s, Korean welfare regime has been characterized by developmental welfare regime, of which invisible welfare programs like relation-based welfare are one of core elements. Developmental welfare regime of Korea has been dismantled after 1990s by the internal and external pressures. Focusing on the declines of relation-based welfare, this study examines the dismantle of developmental welfare regime of Korea. Since the late-1990s, the roles of inter-family income transfer and public income transfer are significant changed in terms of each share of total household income and each contribution of poverty alleviation. In other words, the role of public welfare has been growing while that of relation-based welfare has been decreased in the last twenty years. For the sake of a successful welfare regime transition in Korea, redistributional function of public welfare is quite important, but the development of reciprocal social economy and open community are also needed. Because, at this time and in this place, traditional welfare state building strategy is not proper in many aspects. However, it is impossible to achieve the development of reciprocal open community by restoration of relation-based welfare which has been already declined. This study regards enlargement of social economy or third sector as a development of reciprocal open community, and insists that cooperatives are especially worthy of notice.

  • This study examines how labor unions change in the 21st centry and what is needed for successful transformation of Korean labor union. The study identifies four major driving forces of change in union's role. They are changes in industrial and occupational structures, utilization of information technology, labor substitution, and changing attitude of workers. The effects are decrease in union membership, shrinking coverage of bargaining, weakening voice mechanism, and representation. Thus, labor unions in the 21st centry transform themselves into service union, individual representation system, and worker participation model. Korean labor union, with its current reputation of militant unionism, needs to transform into above mentioned model. Two keys for the change are market competition and family unionism.

  • The purpose of this research was to reduce the burden of household management and the difficulty of rearing children, which are two most important obstacles for a dual-income family. For this, we suggested a cohousing project, as an alternative concept to conventional housing, where people can socially interact with each other and share mutual cooperation for a better quality of life. We surveyed the lifestyle of dual-income families in Korea, how they understood the cohousing project and their opinions on it. We carried out a survey with the wives from dual income families who were living in the metropolitan areas including Seoul. We contacted 30 wives for the survey to determine the reality of the double income couple family and interviewed them to make a detailed plan for cohousing based on their understanding and needs. In the results, many women who responded to the interview agreed that cohousing was an ideal housing arrangement for the dual-income family. However, they were anxious that it would take too much time and effort to develop their own housing estate by themselves. Therefore, we looked for a way to save time, efforts and cost in developing a cohousing project and came up with the remodeling as a solution.

  • This research is conducted through a qualitative methodology, and it aimed for understanding of the generalized structure of getting-together experiences from South Korean who had conversations with North Korean refugees for a long term. As a result, the study, which includes the experiences along with consideration of both contexts and timeline, shows that 'One Korean but divided into South and North', 'Synthesize of water and oil', 'Different from us', 'Understand relativism and deal with it', 'Limitation as an one race: Living different ways on a peninsula' and 'Parallel horizons: Heading to vanishing point' are the key concepts. By understanding these keys, it was able to figure out how their consciousness and acts have been developed in a long term perspective, and thus, we suggest alternative solutions that can be practiced by social workers.

This study applied analytical framework based on logic model of systems theory, collected data from the subject group, and evaluated the sub-programs on dimensions of process and outcome. The results showed that this program has an effect on improving self-efficacy through participating SNS activities, enhancing communication through boosting SNS, creating new culture for older adults, and changing attitudes between generations. Based on these results, the practical guidelines for expanding the communication enhancement program through SNS, leading by older adults in the community, were suggested.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore ways to revitalize the community-based child care community by identifying the factors that are hindering and activating the operation and use of this community by elementary school students. To this end, an in-depth interview survey was conducted of operators of child care communities in Jeollabuk-do and users of caring communities. Detailed themes, sub-ranges and upper ranges were determined through a qualitative research method. As a result of the study, it was determined that the basic environmental weakness of the caring community and its lack of power are the things hindering the operation and use of rhe communities the most. On the other hand, the main activation factors for community-based child care community activities were the stabilization of the environment and the strengthening of the internal capacity of the care community. This study is meaningful as basic data for the safe establishment and activation of a community-based child care community, which is emerging as an alternative to the child care gap due to the prolonged effects of COVID-19.

  • The purpose of this study is to critically review recent discourse on aging appeared in Korean newspapers. For this purpose, 1,725 articles on 'aging' or 'elderly' appeared on three major Korean newspapers during 1997- 2006 are analyzed. It is shown that there is a recent surge of articles portraying the positive images of aging in Korean newspapers emphasizing the importance of productive, successful aging and active life style of the elderly. This trend is a welcomed change from the negative images of elderly as dependent burden of society. However, it seems that over emphasis on positive aging and 'New Elderly' might have created another stereotype about the elderly and unintentionally marginalize the certain group of the elderly. By focusing on individual responsibility, it also overlooked the constraints imposed by social structure on disadvantaged elderly group, such as women, elderly in low socio-economic strata. Theoretical and policy implications of this trends are discussed.
