  • In recent years, the needs for double deck-tunnels have increased in large cities due to the increase in traffic volume and high land compensation costs. In Korea, a network type tunnel which is smaller than general road tunnels and crosses another tunnel underground is planned. In the shield tunnel joints between the existing shield tunnel and the box-type enlargement section, a partial steel-concrete joint is proposed where the bending moment is large instead of the existing full-section steel joint. In order to analysis the enlargement section of the shield tunnel diverged section to reflect the three-dimensional effect, the two-dimensional analysis model is considered to consider the column effect and the stiffness effect of the longitudinal member. A two-dimensional analysis method is proposed to reflect the stiffness of the longitudinal member and the column effect of the longitudinal point by considering the rigidity of the longitudinal member as the elastic spring point of the connecting part in the lateral model. As a result of the analysis of the model using the longitudinal member, it was considered that the structural safety of the partial steel-concrete joint can be secured by reducing the bending moment of the joint and the box member by introducing the longitudinal member having the stiffness equal to or greater than a certain value.

  • Behavior of a rock block consisting of rock joints during excavation of an underground opening is an important factor for the mechanical stability of the opening. In this study, the behavior of a rock block under different geostatic stress and joint property conditions was analyzed quantitatively. The behavior of the rock block analyzed by 3DEC numerical analysis was compared with that of the theoretical calculation, and the error between the theoretical value and the numerical analysis result was analyzed under various geostatic stress and joint property conditions. The result of the stability analysis of a rock block showed less than 5% of error with numerical simulation result, which verified the applicability of the purposed analytic solution.

  • Rocks are composed of the discrete elements of microstructures such as different grains and microcracks. The studies of these microstructures are of increasing interest in engineering geology and civil engineering related to construction of a deep under-ground space. Accordingly, instead of a simplified continuum approach, discrete structural elements and mechanical properties of various grains must be accounted. But it is difficult to analyse crack and discontinuity surfaces in Euclidean geometry. So, Mandelbrot( 1983) developed fractal theory to manage irregular body in nature. In this study, geometrical properties of microstructures to estimate a relation between crack propagation and stress were calculated. Then it is shown that fractal theory can be applied to research real mechanical behavior of rocks.

  • The failure of rock mass around deep tunnel, different from shallow tunnel largely affected by discontinuities, is dominated by magnitudes and directions of stresses, and the failures dominated by stresses can be divided into ductile and brittle features according to the conditions of stresses and the characteristics of rock mass. It is important to know the range and the depth of the V-shaped notch type failure resulted from the brittle failure, such as spalling, slabbing and rock burst, because they are the main factors for the design of excavation and support of deep tunnels. The main features of brittle failure are that it consists of cohesion loss and friction mobilization according to the stress condition, and is progressive. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model has been developed in order to simulate the brittle behavior of rock mass around deep tunnel by introducing the bi-linear failure envelope cut off, elastic-elastoplastic coupling and gradual spread of elastoplastic regions. By performing a series of numerical analyses, it is shown that the depths of failure estimated by this model coincide with an empirical relation from a case study.

  • Round trip activity occurs discretely due to the abrasion of drill bit in the deep drilling project. Round trip has great impact on the drilling performance because it takes more time to change a drill bit as the depth goes deeper. Therefore, a reliable prediction technology of the round trip should be secured for feasibility analysis and effective management of the drilling project. Lee et al. (2013) developed the TOSA (round trip occurrence simulation algorithm) which can analyze the depth and timing of round trip occurrence at each abrasion state of bit. However, TOSA has weakness that it takes long time for simulation because the number of simulation increase exponentially as increasing the number of simulation section. This study developed the TOSA based round trip performance prediction module using genetic algorithm for simulating in a short time and verified simulation results.

  • Recently, as the utilization of underground space increases, the demand for underground excavation increases. In this study, the concrete mixture with a new material was used to develop and evaluate the stability of the CS-H wall that can greatly minimize the problems of existing wall and minimize the impact of ground depression and surrounding ground that may occur in the future for excavation of over 30 m deep in urban areas. The fiber reinforcement formulation of steel fibers, synthetic fibers, and glass fibers, along with fine aggregate parts of PS-ball and ferronickel, were mixed. The Mixture ratios were determined by conducting slump test compresive strength test, modulus of elastic test, flexural strength test, splitting tensile strength test and conductivity test. As a result of the test, the steel fiber mixture showed very good results compared to other reference values in all items, and it is considered to be the most suitable for the CS-H wall to be developed.

  • As the construction of trans infrastructure using the underground tunnel have been rapidly increased, various nearby excavation of existed underground facility including subway structure has been occurred in urban tunnelling. The concern and worry relating to the safety and stability of the existed facility by nearby excavation is becoming the key issues in urban tunnelling. In this study, it was conducted for existed the subway station structure at Seoul subway line which was closely located in the new Dongbuk urban metro railway to determine the behavior characteristics of station structure according to adjacent tunnel construction. Also, it was reviewed the evaluation of the safety zone and excavation method for subway structure. And after a review of damage evaluation, track irregularities and structural calculation by using a numerical analysis, stability of the subway structure according to nearby tunnel excavation was evaluated to be secured. This study is expected to be applied as useful reference in advance if you need to review the effects of existed structure according to nearby construction in complex urban tunnelling.

  • ESCP Project showed an urban excavation case and introduced design method for case of Soil-Structure behavior in urban excavation. In this case, a retaining structures design to analysis the behavior of retaining wall and adjacent structures in urban excavations was applied by using a Elasto-plastic beam and limit Equilibrium analysis and soil-structure interaction analysis. Reliable design of earth retaining structures and the ground adjacent to braced wall in urban excavation are often difficult due to many variable factors. The ground settlement and the damage of adjacent structures in urban excavation has been an imprtant issue. Therefore, the stability of the adjacent structures must be secured with the excavation support and research on the protection of adjacent structure is necessary.

  • High-speed trains have been developed widely in many countries in order to transport a large quantity of people and commodities rapidly. When a high speed train enters a tunnel, aerodynamic resistance is generated suddenly. This resistance causes micro pressure wave and discomfort to passengers. Therefore, it is essential to incorporate a pressure relief system in a tunnel and streamlined shape of a train in order to reduce aerodynamic resistance caused by a high-speed train. Additionally, the cross-sectional area of a tunnel should be carefully determined to reduce discomfort of passengers. A pressure relief duct and a vertical shaft are representative measures in a tunnel. This study represents the effect of pressure relief ducts in order to alleviate pressure changes within a time period in a tunnel. One-dimensional network numerical simulations were carried out in order to estimate the effect of pressure relief systems.

  • Recently, there has been a growing demand for underground space, leading to the utilization of earth retaining walls for deep excavations. Earth retaining walls are structures that are susceptible to displacement, and their measurement and management are carried out in accordance with the standards established by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. However, managing displacement through measurement can be considered similar to post-processing. Therefore, in this study, we not only predicted the horizontal displacement of a retaining wall with ground anchors installed using machine learning, but also analyzed the impact of the prediction model based on data scaling and data splitting methods while learning measurement data using machine learning. Custom splitting was the most suitable method for learning and outputting measurement data. Data scaling demonstrated excellent performance, with an error within 1 and an R-squared value of 0.77 when the anchor tensile force and water pressure were standardized. Additionally, it predicted a negative displacement compared to a model that without scaling.
