  • The heat transfer by simultaneous conduction, convection and radiation between flame and fuel surface in a thermally radiating medium is investigated theoretically. The flame and fuel surface are assumed to be diffuse, gray, infinite, isothermal, parallel surfaces separated by a finite distance. The space between the plates is supposed is formulated exactly in terms of simultaneous interior-differential equations. The numerical results reveal the effect of the system parameters on the heat transfer characteristics and the temperature distributions. The numerical results reveal that the optically thick radiating medium has a blocking effect on the total beat transfer. The temperature distributions are observed to be convex upward for an optically thick radiating medium as the alberto decreases.

  • Natural convection heat transfer has been investigated numerically in the vertical annulus filled withsaturated porous material for the aspect ratio less than unity. The inner wall of the annulus is exposed to constant heat flux condition and the outer wall is cooled to keep isothermal condition. The upper and the lower horizontal wall are assumed to be insulated. Under conditions ranging 50 .leq. Ra .leq. 10000, 1 .leq. RD .leq. 12, the characteristics of flow and heat transfer have been investigated. The results show that average Nusselt numbers increase when the radius ratio increases and the multicellular flows are not detected under the present conditions. Isothermal lines are plotted within the porous media. Temperatures of the inner wall with constant heat flux conditions and the local heat flux rate of the cooled outer wall with constant temperature are also obtained.

  • In this paper, the numerical analysis for heat conduction of silica/phenolic composite material, used for solid rocket nozzle liners or insulators, is conducted. A 1-dimensional finite difference method for the analysis of silica/phenolic during the firing of a solid rocket motor is used to calculate heat conduction, considering surface ablation and thermal decomposition. The boundary condition at the nozzle wall, considering the convective heat transfer, is obtained via integration equations. The numerical results of the surface ablation and char depth are compared with the results of a TPEM-10 test motor, finding that the result of calculation agrees with the thermal response of the test motor.

  • This paper investigated the method to predict a thermal response of internal insulation in a solid rocket motor considering both thermal decomposition and ablation. Changes in properties due to the thermal decomposition, swelling of char layer and movement of decomposition gases inside the material were considered during a modeling. And radiative/convective heat flux from the exhaust gas were applied as boundary conditions, while the chemical ablation of the material surface is modeled with algebraic equations. Test SRM with thermocouples was solved for a validation purpose. The results showed that predicted temperatures have identical trends and values compared to the experimental values. And an error of predicted thermal destruction depth was around 0.1 mm.

  • experimental and computational studies ore carried out to investigate the natural convection of the single phase flow in a tank with a heated horizontal plate facing downward. This is a simplified model for investigations of the influence of a core melt at the bottom of a reactor vessel on the thermal hydraulic behavior in a oater filled cavity surrounding the vessel. In this case the vessel is simulated by a hexahedron insulated box with a heated plate Horizontally mounted at the bottom of the box. The box with the heated plate is installed in a water filled hexahedron tank. Coolers are immersed in the U-type water volume between the box and the tank. Although the multicomponent flows exist more probably below the heated plate in reality, present study concentrates on the single phase flow in a first step prior to investigating the complicated multicomponent thermal hydraulic phenomena. In the present study, in order to get a better understanding for the natural convection characteristics below the heated plate, the velocity and temperature are measured by LDA(Laser Doppler Anemometry) and thermocouples, respectively. And How fields are visualized by taking pictures of the How region with suspended particles. The results show the occurrence of a very effective circulation of the fluid in the whole How area as the heater and coolers are put into operation. In the remote region below the heated plate the new is nearly stagnant, and a remarkable temperature stratification can be observed with very thin thermal boundary. Analytical predictions using the FLUTAN code show a reasonable matching of the measured velocity fields.

  • In this paper, we have analyzed the temperature variation trend of a slab on between the process of reheating furnace and the termination of roughing mill process during hot rolling process. 1) cooling by radiation and convection current in the air, 2) plastic deformation heat, 3) cooling by descaling water, 4) cooling by contact with rolling rolls and/or transmitting rolls. For the analysis, the factors have been adopted as the problems of the rolling process to be solved such that we have established an application technique in relation to the determination of boundary conditions on the slab surface. We have presented a procedure for an analysis of the cooling phenomenon treated as a problem of two-dimensional transient heat flow using finite difference equation and suggested techniques of implementing sequentialized rolling tasks in correlation with the procedure. From the result of simulation, it is shown that the difference between calculation value and measurement value is within the range of the industrial measurement error. Also, it is proved that the assumptions, conditions, and properties used in the computer simulation is appropriate by showing that the pattern of a drop in temperature at each rolling event is in accord with real circumstances.

  • The purpose of this paper is to introduce a method to predict the case thermal insulation charred and erosion thickness as a function of the exposure time to combustion gases and in solid rocket motors. The sizing of the insulator requires a good estimation of the thermal and mechanical loads at the wall. The method is particularly suitable for internal insulation areas subjected to high radiative, convective heat fluxes and $Al_2O_3$ slag pool. The mathematical approach and lab-scale experiment were intentionally simplified in order to obtain some simple and rapid relationships particularly useful for trade-off studies and thermal insulation preliminary design. The method was utilized to compute the charred and erosion thicknesses of the insulation on the aft chamber domes. A comparison between theoretical and experimental insulator char thicknesses of the motor insulation is reported, indicating the applicability of the predictive method employed.

  • A total of 6 stepwise constructions were made for building the floating mass concrete foundation. The optimal curing strategies and specialized construction guidelines were adoptively extracted from the 1.5m cube mock-up test prior to the main concrete work. Two different thermal crack index(TCI) calculations from current construction manual exhibit relatively low values as comparing the measured temperature data. This implies that the hydration-induced cracking could be developed in parts of concrete mass. However, the controversial phenomenons in reality were observed. No significant surface cracks are detected at the successive construction stages. Thereby, this paper raises the question regarding on the existence of characteristic length with varying size and shape of a target specimen which are missing in the current construction manual. The isothermal core area and high thermal gradient area in the edge volume should be identified and be introduced to TCI calculation for the purpose of an accuracy.

  • The heat transfer coefficient on the wall, which is used as a boundary condition in the thermal analysis of general contract-divergent supersonic nozzles, affects the thermal analysis accuracy of the entire nozzle. Accordingly, many methods of deriving a heat transfer coefficient have been proposed. In this study, the accuracy of each method was compared. For this purpose, the heat transfer coefficients were calculated through theoretical-based analogy methods, semi-empirical equations, and CFD simulations for the previously performed heat transfer experiment with an isothermal wall and compared with the experimental results. The results show that the Prandtl-Taylor analogy methods and the CFD results with the k-ω SST turbulence model were in good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, the Modified Bartz empirical formula showed an overall over-prediction tendency.
