  • Natural convection heat transfer in rectangular air enclosure was studied interferometrically and numerically for the use of adiabatic and constant temperature horizontal boundary conditions. In the isothermal horizontal boundary case with the temperature difference ratio, .DELTA. $T_{v/}$.DELTA. $T_{H}$ .simeq. 1 temperature distribution in the enclosure is strongly stratified and the average Nusselt Number is higher than that of adiabatic horizontal boundary case.ase.

  • Numerical calculations are carried out for evaluating the natural convection induced by the temperature difference between a hot inner circular cylinder and a cold outer square enclosure. A two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained by using the finite volume method to model an inner circular cylinder that was designed by using the immersed boundary method (IBM) for a Rayleigh number of $10^7$. In this study, we investigate the effect of the location ($\delta$) of the inner cylinder, which is located along the vertical central axis of the outer enclosure, on the heat transfer and fluid flow. The natural convection changes from unsteady to steady state depending on the $\delta$. The two critical lower bound and upper bound positions are ${\delta}_{C,L}$ = 0.05 and ${\delta}_{C,U}$ = 0.18, respectively. Within these defined bounds, the thermal and flow fields are in steady state.

  • Rayleigh-Benard natural convection experiments were carried out as the preliminary experiment to simulate the natural convection of the core melt at the severe accident conditions. This work focused on the influences of plate separation distance(s), the existence of the side walls and crust geometries of upper and lower plates. Based upon the analogy concept, a cupric acid-copper sulfate electroplating system($H_2SO_4-CuSO_4$) was employed as the mass transfer system and measurements were made for $Ra_s$ ranging from $1.06{\times}10^7$ to $2.91{\times}10^{10}$. The test results measured for a single horizontal plate were in good agreement with the correlation reported by McAdams and those for two horizontal plates showed the similar trend to the existing Rayleigh-Benard heat transfer correlations developed by Dropkin and Somerscales, Globe and Dropkin. The measured heat transfer rate decreased with the increasing separation distance between the two plates and became similar to those for a single horizontal plate. Fin arrays mounted on both upper and lower plates enhanced the heat transfer rates. For all cases, the heat transfer rates measured for open side walls are higher than those for closed ones.

  • This paper describes a measuring apparatus that can be used to appraise the effectiveness of nanofluids as new heat-transfer-enhancing fluids. A couple of apparatuses using fine hot wires as sensors have been proposed for this purpose; however, they have a technical weakness related to the uncertain working conditions of the sensor. The present method uses the convective heat transfer coefficient from a hot wire as an indication of the heat transfer effectiveness of the nanofluid, where the temperature of the wire remains constant during the experiment. The operating principle and experimental procedure are explained in detail, and the validity of the system is tested with pure base fluids. The effects of particle concentration, velocity, and temperature on the heat transfer coefficients of the nanofluids are discussed comprehensively using the experimental data for graphite nanolubrication oil.

  • The core melts stratifies into lower mixture layer and upper metal layer by density in a severe accident condition. The decay heat generated from the mixture layer threatens the integrity of the reactor vessel. This study simulated the natural convection heat transfer of the mixture layer with volumetric heat source using the mass transfer system. $H_2SO_4-CuSO_4$ electroplating system was used as the mass transfer system. With the modified Rayleigh number of $3{\times}10^{14}$, the Nusselt number showed minimum at the bottom and increased along curvature to the top of the experimental apparatus.

  • A numerical and experimental study has been performed on natural convection heat transfer from a horizontal annulus with spacers. The mode of heat transfer in the annulus is changed from conduction to convection at Ra = 10$^{3}$. By increasing wall conductivity, mean Nusselt number is apparently increased at $K_{w}$/K$_{f}$ .leg. 48, but at /K$_{w}$/K$_{f}$ > 48, slightly increased for no spacers, and decreased for vertical spacers and horizontal spacers. The mean Nusselt number can be represented in an exponential function of Grashof number at all conditions. The characterics of natural convection heat transfer show similiarity for no spacers and vertical spacers but show difference for horizontal spacers. The presence of the horizontal spacers increased the convective heat transfer by an average 6 percent over that for the no forced cooling to outer cylinder. The maximum local Nusselt number appears at .theta. = 150.deg. in a conducting tube and .theta. = 30.deg. in an outer cylinder for vertical spacers, and appears at .theta. = 180.deg. in a conducting tube and .theta. = 0.deg. in an outer cylinder for horizontal spacers.spacers.

  • The primary object of this study is to obtain a basic knowledge of heat transfer enhancement mechanism as affected by temperature driven Marangoni convection. Experiments is achieved to visualize the enhanced heat transfer phenomena by the effect of Marangoni convection through the laser holographic interferometry. Also Nusselt Number is introduced for the relation of Marangoni Number.

  • This study compared between tropospheric column ozone by applying the SAM method to TOMS and OMI data for northern summer. Tropospheric ozone from the SAM represents a peak over the tropical Atlantic, where it is related with biomass burning. This feature is also seen in the distribution of the model and CO. Additionally, enhancement of the SAM ozone over the Middle East, and South and North America agrees well with the model and CO distribution. However, the SAM results show more ozone than the model results over the northern hemisphere, especially the ocean (e.g. the North Pacific and the North Atlantic). The tropospheric ozone distribution from OMI data shows more ozone than that from TOMS data. This can be caused by different viewing angle, sampling frequency, and a-priori ozone profiles between OMI and TOMS. The correlation between the SAM tropospheric ozone and CO is better than that between the model and CO in the tropics. However, that correlation is reversed in the mid-latitude.
