Development of The Signal Control Algorithm Using Travel Time Informations of Sectional Detection Systems (구간검지체계의 통행시간정보를 이용한 신호제어 알고리즘 개발)

  • This study developed an algorithm for real-time signal control based on the detection system that can collect sectional travel time. The signal control variable is maximum queue length per cycle and this variable has a sectional meaning. When a individual vehicle pass through the detector, we can gather the vehicle ID and the detected time. Therefor we can compute the travel time of an individual vehicle between consecutive detectors. This travel time informations were bisected including the delay and not. We can compute queue withdrawing time using this bisection and the max queue length is computed using the deterministic delay model. The objective function of the real-time signal control aims equalization of queue length for all direction. The distribution of the cycle is made by queue length ratios.

A Study on Left-turn Queues Analysis using Queueing Theory under Permissive Left-turn Signal System (비보호좌회전 신호체계운영에 따른 좌회전 대기행렬분석에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the optimal length of left-turn lane in permissive left-turn signal system at the signalized intersection which has a left-turn bay is estimated. It is a simulation analysis using the queueing theory that estimate the length of left-turn lane. Traffic density conform to the standards of operating a permissive left-turn system of the Practical Manual Traffic Safety Facilities. And each of a left-turn arrival rate, a left-turn service rate, left-turn average queueing time, for green time average queueing vehicle, for red time average queueing vehicle and average queueing vehicle cycle is calculated. As a result of this study, we would learn how much the space should be secured at the signalized intersection which has a left-turn bay. The methodology using the queueing theory to work out the optimal length of waiting lane in the permissive left-turn signal system was presented.

Determination of Minimum Spacing between Off-ramp Terminus and Intersection Considering the Influence of Adjacent Signalized Intersections (신호교차로 영향에 따른 도시고속도로 유출연결로 최소이격거리에 관한 연구)

  • The interchanges of urban freeways have many problems with traffic operation due to high off-ramp flows and frequent congestion at adjacent intersections. The flow exiting from off-ramps is affected by the operational status and traffic volume conditions of the nearest signalized intersection. As a result, off-ramp flow cannot exit and the queue backs up the freeway mainline when queues from the signalized intersection form up to the junction of the off-ramp and street. The spacing between an off-ramp and an adjacent intersection is likely to determine the traffic conditions at the adjacent intersection. However, the current design guidelines do not consider such a factor. This study is to develop a model calculating the spacing between off-ramps and adjacent intersections considering the signal, traffic, and road conditions. The variables affecting the model in this study are effective green time (g/C), volume-capacity ratio (v/c), the number of lanes, and off-ramp volume. Various scenarios are designed to represent the effects of the variables and the road networks are constructed using VISSIM, which is a common traffic micro-simulation software package. The queue length is derived from VISSIM and this length is considered as the recommended spacing between the off-ramp and the adjacent intersection. Through the simulation analysis, regression models are developed to calculate the queue length reflecting the various conditions such as signals, traffic, and road configurations. The developed model can be used to create road design guidelines to determine the location of off-ramps in the planning stage.

A Discrete Time Queueing Model for Intersection Analysis (교차로 분석을 위한 불연속 대기행렬 모형 개발)

  • 신호화된 교차로의 운영비율을 측정하기 위해 현재 세계적으로 광범위하게 이용되 는 척도는 교차로 통과차량의 평균지체시간이다. 그간 교차로 분석을 위해 많은 대기행렬 모형이 발표되어 왔고 또 그중 일부가 현재 사용 중에 있는데 이들은 모두 steady-state를 가정한 해법이다. 그러나 steady-state 모형은 시간에 따른 대기행렬 길이의 변화를 고려하 지 못하므로 현실적인 분석에 한계가 있는 방법론이다. 그러므로 정당한 교차로 시간산출을 위해서는 time-dependent한 분석형의 개발이 요구된다. 본 연구에서는 discrete Markov chain을 이용하여 단순히 단위시간 동안의 도착율과 출발율로써 transition probabilities를 계산하는 새로운 대기행렬 모형을 개발하였다. 개발된 불연속 대기행렬 모형을 이용하여 교 차로 분석을 할 경우 기존의 교차로 지체모형과 비교하여 기대되는 개선효과는 다음과 같 다. 변화를 고려한 dynamic한 분석으로 현실적이고 정당한 예측을 할 수 있다. 신호자동에 의한 영향을 분석할 수 있다. 그리고 독립적교차로 뿐만 아니라 간선도로, 나아가서 network 분석을 할 수 있으며, 동시에 주어지 교통여건에 대해 신호자동화를 위한 최적값을 산출해 낸다.

Estimation of Probe Vehicle Penetration Rates on Multi-Lane Streets Using the Locations of Probe Vehicles in Queues at Signalized Intersections (신호교차로 대기행렬 내 프로브 차량의 위치 정보를 활용한 다차로 접근로에서의 프로브 차량 비율 추정)

  • The probe vehicle penetration rate is a required parameter in the estimation of entire volume, density, and queue length from probe vehicle data. The previous studies have proposed estimation methods without point detectors, which are based on probability structures for the locations of probe and non-probe vehicles; however, such methods are poorly suited to the case of multi-lane streets. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the probe vehicle penetration rate at a multi-lane intersection and introduce a probability distribution of the queue length of each lane. Although a gap between estimates and observations was found, the estimates followed the trend of observations; the estimation could be improved by the correction factor hereafter. This study is expected to be used as a basic study for the estimation of entire volume, density, and queue length at multi-lane intersections without point detectors.

Queue Detection using Fuzzy-Based Neural Network Model (퍼지기반 신경망모형을 이용한 대기행렬 검지)

  • Real-time information on vehicle queue at intersections is essential for optimal traffic signal control, which is substantial part of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Computer vision is also potentially an important element in the foundation of integrated traffic surveillance and control systems. The objective of this research is to propose a method for detecting an exact queue lengths at signalized intersections using image processing techniques and a neural network model Fuzzy ARTMAP, which is a supervised and self-organizing system and claimed to be more powerful than many expert systems, genetic algorithms. and other neural network models like Backpropagation, is used for recognizing different patterns that come from complicated real scenes of a car park. The experiments have been done with the traffic scene images at intersections and the results show that the method proposed in the paper could be efficient for the noise, shadow, partial occlusion and perspective problems which are inevitable in the real world images.

  • 이 논문에서는 discrete-event모의실험을 사용해서 대기행렬모형에서 대기시간이 길어지는 확률을 추정하는 문제를 연구했습니다. 단 한번의 모의실험에서 확률의 신뢰구간을 구할 수 있는 방법인, binary bootstrap을 개발했습니다. Bernoulli trial과 first-order Markov processes에 적용하여 본 결과 이론치에 별 차이없이 추정하였습니다. 또한 M/M/1 대기행렬모형에서 대기시간이 길 확률을 추정했을 때 batch means방법보다 binary bootstrap이 월등히 우수한 결과를 보였습니다.

  • COSMOS system which was developed in Seoul for real-time signal control was designed to judge traffic condition for practicing signal operation. However, it occurs efficiency problem that stop line detection and queue length detection could not judge overflow saturation of street. For that reason, following research process GPS data of Seoul city's corporationowned taxi to calculate travel speed that excluded existing system of stop line detection and queue length detection. Also, "Research of calculating queue length by GPS data" which was progressed with following research expressed queue length. It is based on establishing algorithm of judging congestion situation. The algorithm was applied to a few areas where appeared congestion situation consistently to confirm real time traffic condition with established network.   • 교통신호에서 주로 고려되는 변수는 신호주기(cycle length), 녹색시간(green split), 옵셋(offset)그리고 좌회전 현시순서(left-turn phase sequence)로 구성된다. 기존의 대부분의 연동 모델들은 고정된 주기하에서 평균적인 유입 교통량을 측정한 후, 선형최적화 이론을 적용하여 최적 신호를 산출한다. 그러나 이 방법은 어디까지나 평균적인 데이터에 대해서 계산을 한 것이기 때문에 실시간 최적화를 제공하기가 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 평균 차량 통행량 대신 실시간으로 입력되는 차량 대기행렬, 차량 도착률을 기초로 대기차량을 최소화하는 동적 신호시간 산출 모델을 개발하였다. 본 모델에서는 Peytechew가 제안한 각 진입로에서의 대기 차량 예측 모델을 기초로 하여 다음 주기에서의 차량 대기 행렬을 예측한 후, 선형 최적화 이론을 적용하여 신호시간을 산출한다. 본 모델에서 산출된 신호주기와 녹색시간은 대기차량길이를 최소화하는 신호 시간으로서 교차로간의 연동효과를 고려하여 실시산 교통상황에 따라 주기별로 변화한다. 본 모델은 3개의 교차로로 구성된 네트워크를 대상으로 적용하였다. 실험 네트워크의 주도로 교통량은 부도로의 교통량 보다 많다고 가정하였으며 각 링크사이에서의 차량 진출입은 없다고 보았다.

A Study on the Preemption Control Strategies Considering Queue Length Constraints (대기행렬길이 제약조건을 고려한 Preemption 제어 전략에 관한 연구)

  • Currently, the signalized intersections in Korea are operated without providing an emergency vehicle preemption control strategy. Thus, it might threaten the safety of the pedestrians and drivers on highways when an emergency vehicle faces congested traffic conditions. The existing preemption control is activated when an emergency vehicle is detected along a path. This enables emergency vehicles to progress uninterrupted, but it also increases the delay of other vehicles. In this paper, a revised preemption control strategy considering queue length restrictions is proposed to make both a progressive movement of an emergency vehicle and reduce delay of other vehicles simultaneously. By applying the preemption control strategy through a simulation study, it was shown that delay of an emergency vehicle decreased to 44.3%-96.1% and speed increased to 8.8%-42.0% in all 9 cases as compared with a conventional signal control. The existing preemption control is superior for oversaturated conditions (v/c >1.0) or a link length less than 200m. However, the preemption control considering queue length constraints shows better performance than the existing preemption control when the v/c is less than 0.8 and a link length is longer than 500m.
