  • Coherence and relevaned concern the ways in which discouse is interpreted. In this inversigation, the notions of coherence and relevance are discussed with examples in which they account for discourse interpretation and Charolles's(1983)procedural model of coherence is compared and combined with Sperber & Wilson's(1986a)Principle of Relevance. It is shown that the notion of coherence is not adeqiately established, but that the procedural approach will be a bridge between the prinxiples of coherence and relevance, each of which still remainas to be enriched and completed.

  • Discourse analysis is useful for examining discourse characteristics of dementia patients and differentiating them from normal adults. However, inconsistent tasks, transcription methods and measures have been utilized, thus analyses were inevitably unsystematic. The purpose of this study was to investigate tasks, transcription methods and measures of discourse studies in dementia. Studies on dementia discourses written in English were collected via Scopus database containing abstracts and citations from 2005 to 2014, and were analyzed in detail. From the results, the most frequently used task was 'storytelling-topic'. It was observed that use of consistent transcription conventions rendered more reliable transcription data. Measures could be categorized into coherence, cohesion, productivity, propositional syntactic lexical analysis, and fluency, and each category belonged to discourse processing levels (i.e., processing of conceptual networks, propositions, and natural language units). In conclusion, future research warrants not only utilization of discourse tasks depending on dementia types and features, but also application of consistent transcription conventions. Additionally, measures based on the discourse processing theory would enable us to systematically interpret discourse studies.

  • A brief survey of linguistic studies on the nature of contrastive information in discourse was Presented first, and an attempt was also made to incorporate the Linguistic theories and concepts about contrast in discourse into a psychological framework. A tentative model of processing of contrastive information in discourse was Proposed, and eight experimental studies on the effects of contrastive information on comprehension and memory of short and ions discourses were reviewed. Experimental results showed that contrastive sentences took more time to process at encoding, and yet were recognized faster and cued-recalled in greater amount than noncontrastive sentences. It was also found that levels of contrast in the discourse structure have some effects on encoding time. It was further found that the sentence immediately following the contrastive sentence was processed slowly regardless of whether it does or does not resolve the contrast. The implications of the results of empirical studies were discussed in relation to developing a research framework that integrate coherence studies and contrast studies urns the two disciplines of linguistics and cognitive psychology.

  • This study investigated the aspects of how three preservice elementary school teachers conducted the data-text transforming discourses in their science simulation teaching and how their epistemological conversations worked for learners' construction of scientific knowledge. Three preservice teachers, who had presented simulation teaching on the seasonal change of constellations, participated in the study. The results revealed that one preservice teacher, who had implemented the transforming discourses of data-to-evidence and model-to-explanation, appeared to facilitate learners' knowledge construction. The other two preservice teachers had difficulty helping learners construct science knowledge due to their lack of transforming discourses. What we should consider for improving preservice elementary school teachers' teaching competencies was discussed based on a detailed comparison of three cases of preservice teachers' data-text transforming.

  • We explored the performance improvement method of automated scoring for scientific argumentation. We analyzed the pattern of argumentation using automated scoring models. For this purpose, we assessed the level of argumentation for student's scientific discourses in classrooms. The dataset consists of four units of argumentation features and argumentation levels for episodes. We utilized argumentation clusters and n-gram to enhance automated scoring accuracy. We used the three supervised learning algorithms resulting in 33 automatic scoring models. As a result of automated scoring, we got a good scoring accuracy of 77.59% on average and up to 85.37%. In this process, we found that argumentation cluster patterns could enhance automated scoring performance accuracy. Then, we analyzed argumentation patterns using the model of decision tree and random forest. Our results were consistent with the previous research in which justification in coordination with claim and evidence determines scientific argumentation quality. Our research method suggests a novel approach for analyzing the quality of scientific argumentation in classrooms.

  • We developed a small-group training program for in-service teachers focused on scientific modeling. We collected the discourses of the teachers who participated in the activity and analyzed them by type. The training program employed a collaborative approach in which a small group completed tasks and produced outputs based on the theme of 'galaxies and the Universe' to enable practical application in classes. Three in-service science teachers participated in the training program. Their discourses were recorded, transcribed, and classified into types based on individual turns and interaction units. The language expressions of the teachers reflected the unique characteristics of the teaching profession, with each participant having preferred language expression types, albeit with a generally low prevalence of specific language expression types across the participants. Differences in discourse characteristics related to the modeling theme, task presentation method, and model types, revealed that variations in the proportion of interaction unit types during the modeling design, build, and evaluation stages were primarily influenced by the teachers' familiarity with the modeling theme. While the task presentation method also influenced interaction types, model types had little impact on the distribution of interaction types. Considering these findings, training programs on modeling for in-service teachers should include a checklist to encourage sufficient interaction between participants as well as propose proper questions that can be effectively addressed through collaboration.

  • The existing studies of a dialogue system can be classified into two major parts. One is a study for a practical system, and the other is a study to understand a principal of dialogue phenomena. The former focuses on robustness in real environment for dialogue systems. However, it cannot guarantee its performance in complicated dialogue environment. The latter has studied as the plan-based model typically. It has strong points that it can reflect complex dialogue phenomena and can infer user's intention in various situations. However, an initial design of this model is so complicated, and it is difficult for this model to be extended to the interaction model for response generation in a practical dialogue system. This paper proposes a new dialogue modeling using plan recognition and a discourse stark to effectively generate response in a practical dialogue system.
