  • Around Yeongsan river basin, there are Yeongkwang Gundong, Muan Inpyeong Tombs, Muu Gusan-ri Tombs and Hampyeong Guksan remain from which a lot of iron artifacts were excavated. Among them, 6 iron artifacts were chosen, and their microstructures were analyzed. As a result, Iron artifacts were produced sponge iron by the low temperature reduction process and a part of microstructure have the possibility that steel made by decarburizing. And also, by tempering the parts which need high strength, the iron artifacts had high strength and by distributing the weakness of the tempered structure to the nearby untempered parts, their breaking was prevented and they had the durability. These skills were used then. Especially these skills were found to be used in the 2nd century by high skilled people because an iron axe excavated at Yeongkwang Gundong of 2nd century by the historical record showed that the skill was used. Also microstructures were found to show the possibility that the iron technology was inherited to the late 5th century. When producing iron artifacts made of sponge iron containing small amount of carbon, that was made by the production process repeating molding, carburizing, heat treatment and hammering.

  • Surface hardening treatments, such as using the high-frequency induction hardening method, are widely used to increase the fatigue life and prevent the failure of materials by locally increasing the surface hardness. This method, in particular, brings an improvement in static strength by compressive residual surface stress due to the hardening. In this study, the mechanical properties of high-frequency induction hardened SCM440 steel were investigated. These results were also compared with those for base metal and a Q/T (tempering after quenching) treatment specimen. The test results showed that partially high-frequency induction hardened SCM440 steel specimens were more improved in static strength, surface hardness, fatigue limit, and anti-wear than the base metal and Q/T treatment specimens. In particular, the fatigue limit of the high-frequency induction hardened SCM440 steel increased by more than about 52% compared to that of base metal and by about 25% compared to that of the Q/T specimen.

  • The very rapid cooling problem from $820^{\circ}$C to $20^{\circ}$C on the surface of the steel by thermal conduction including the latent heat of phase transformation of steel and by transient boiling heat transfer of water are considered to principal problem in quenching. The transient boiling process of water at the surface of specimen during the quenching process were experimentally analyzed. Then the heat flux was numerically calculated by the numerical method of inverse heat condition problem. In this report, the simulation program to calculate the cooling curves for large rolls was made using the subcooled transient boiling curve as a boundary condition. By this simulation program, the cooling curves of rolls from D=50mm to D=200mm were calculated and the effects of agitation of circulation of water also investigated.

  • Early fracture and cutting force of ceramic tool for hardened STC3 steel was investigated in this study. It was found that early fracture of ceramic tool was mostly occurred before normal wear was progressed beyond a critical cutting speed and normal wear was performed under the critical cutting speed. The relationships among critical cutting speed, which was a cause of early fracture, suggested cutting cross section, that is, maximum thickness of cut and width of cut, and cutting force were examined. The following conclusions were obtained: (1)Critical cutting speed showed a high value in the case of small maximum thickness of cut and large nose radius, but was not influenced by width of cut, (2)Principal, feed and radial force, respectively, showed the proportional value to constant cutting area, width of cut and maximum thickness of cut orderly, (3)Occurrence of early fracture was dependent upon radial force.

  • This study analyzed the microstructure of ring-pommel swords, excavated from Ancient Tombs, Hadae, Ulsan and examined their production technique, using non-destructive testing and a metallurgical method. The results confirmed that the five ring-pommel swords, unearthed in Ancient Tombs, Hadae, Ulsan, as identified by radiographic non-destructive testing, had been solely manufactured using iron, through forging based on the single-piece technique. Furthermore, these results were compared with previous studies, and the manufacturing techniques of single-piece ring-pommel swords were categorized into three types: pure iron - changing the shape, pure iron - changing the shape - carburization, and steel - changing the shape - quenching. The ring-pommels of four swords had around 0.7% of carbon content, which is as much as for eutectoid steel and higher than for other parts of these swords, such as the backs of their blades and handles. The weapon function of a small ring-pommel sword, under 60cm in length, was maximized by quenching focusing on its blade. Conversely, the martensite quenching structure was not observed in four ring-pommel swords shorter than 75cm. In other words, the same types of single-piece ring-pommel swords(late in 2C~early in 4C) were unearthed from Ancient Tombs, Hadae, and the group who has manufactured these swords is presumed to have limited their effectiveness, functionally depending on purposes, through an iron-making process and heat-treatment techniques.

  • Optimal heat treatment process in martensitic stainless steel such as SUS416 is investigated. The approach is based on the combination of the interpolation and extrapolation method of a standard heat treatment technology with the principle of quenching and tempering temperature difference. The relationship of the macroscopic structure, fracture toughness and ductility as well as the hardness and strength are considered to induce a simple rule to apply with feasibility. Consequently, Optimal heat treatment condition in martensitic stainless steel is proposed and is shown the better quality. It was found that the smaller pain size of microstructure gives the enhanced fracture toughness and ductility.

  • Microstructures and nonmetallic inclusions of five forged iron axes and one cast iron axe were analyzed. The axes were excavated from the Proto-Three Kingdom Period site located in Yangchon, Gimpo. The forging objects were made of almost pure iron and low carbon steel, and only one among five were quenched after its figuration. Malleable cast iron structures showing on the casting suggest that the decarbonized casting method were applied. According to the results of nonmetallic inclusion analysis, the axes were produced by hammering the iron bloom which was attained with low-temperature -solid-reduction-method. Showing higher Fe content over $SiO_2$, it is assumed that the re-collecting rate of Fe was low because of the insufficient forging temperature and the impurities were included during the smelting process. It is assumed that the lime was used as a preparation because of detecting high Ca contents.

  • This study aimed at measuring the latent heat of phase transformation of S45C carbon steel in quenching and at conducting the analytical researches into the calculation of cooling curves including the latent heat. The temperature of phase transformation of steel and its latent heat are dependant upon the cooling rates at the temperature of A1 phase transformation point. The effect of the latent heat of phase transformation is especially manifest at the cooling curve of center of specimens. The higher the cooling rates became, the lower fell the temperature region of phase transformation. In the figures of cooling rates, the phenomena of cooling rate dropping into zero was caused by the latent heat of phase transformation.

  • Icheon Seolbong fortress is located in Saum-dong, Icheon, Gyeonggi-do Province that its date is founded as 4th century of Bakjae dynasty after excavation by Dankook university museum. Excavated artifacts show various kinds such as earthenwares, ceramics, metal artifacts and so on. Especially many iron artifacts were founded in where Bakjae earthenwares were found that it indicates iron artifacts were manufactured in Bakjae Dynasty. From 6 iron sickles, called Beollat and Millet, samples were taken to examine mircostructures and from the results used iron material, shape-forging, steel-making process, heat treatment were investigated. From this late 4th century Bakjae dynasty iron manufacture profess was established. From the result, different treatment were used in different area of the sickles according to the its use. Beollats were quenched in blade and it was used for special purpose that require Intensity. Millats did not have special treatment that it was used to cut rice plant and plant. Used material was steel, steel was previously made by certain steel-making process. It is formed to produce iron ware and the area where intensity is required heat treatment was employed to make it strong. From the investigation it is derived that iron ware manufacture process in Bakjae dynasty is steel making$\rightarrow$shape-forging$\rightarrow$and heat treatment.
