The objective of the study in this paper was to develop a beam-column element to model members with purely flexural yielding, as well as members with yielding under combined flexure and axial force during severe earthquake ground motins. The developed element can be considered as an one-component series hinge type model. It has the capability to model plastic axial deformation and changes in axial stiffness, and employs hardening rules to handle monotonic, cyclic or arbitrary loading. In general, when compared to experimental results and fiber model predictions, the element showed significantly better performance than the bilinear hinger model and could properly model the beam-column behavior of bare steel members in moment resisting frames. The developed element can more accurately predict local deformation demands and overall responses of structural systems under earthquake loadings than the bilinear hinge element.
Many researches have been conducted to describe the elastic and inelastic behavior of H-shaped beams with web openings, and were generally concentrated on the uniaxial loading conditions. With previous research results, the formulae for the design of beams with web openings, considering local buckling, have been proposed by Darwin. Although the formulae are so simple and useful to apply to real situations, it needs more research on cyclic loading conditions. In this experimental study, a total of seven H-shaped beams with circular web openings under cyclic loading conditions were investigated. The dimension criteria were based on the formulae proposed by Darwin. The suitability of the existing design formulae, the effects of plastic hinges on beams with web openings, and the local bucking around the web openings to the beam strength under cyclic loading were also investigated through by the observations of the behavior of these beams with various dimensional openings.
In the previous work, a new forging process design, which included incremental upsetting, diffusion bonding and cogging, was suggested as a method to manufacture 1.9wt%C ultrahigh carbon workrolls. The previous study showed that incremental upsetting and diffusion bonding are effective in closing voids and healing of the closed void. In addition, compression tests of the 1.9wt%C ultrahigh carbon steel revealed that new microvoids form within the blocky cementite at temperatures of less than $900^{\circ}C$ and that local melting can occur at temperatures over $1120^{\circ}C$. Thus, the forging temperature should be controlled between 900 and $1120^{\circ}C$. Based on these results, incremental upsetting and diffusion bonding were used to check whether they are effective in closing and healing voids in a 1.9wt%C ultrahigh carbon steel. The incremental upsetting and diffusion bonding were performed using sub-sized specimens of 1.9wt%C ultrahigh carbon steel. The specimen was deformed only in the radial direction during the incremental upsetting until the reduction ratio reached about 45~50%. After deformation the specimens were kept at $1100^{\circ}C$ for the 1 hour in order to obtain a high bonding strength for the closed void. Finally, microstructural observations and tensile tests were conducted to investigate void closure behavior and bonding strength.

This paper deals with an automated computer-aided process planning and die design system by which designer can determine operation sequences even if they have a little experience in process planning and die design of quasi-axisymmetric cold forging product by cold former working. The approach to the system is based on knowledge-based rules and a process knowledge base consisting of design rules is built. Knowledge for the system is formulated from plasticity theories, empirical results and the empirical knowledge of field experts. Programs for the system have been written in AutoLISP for the AutoCAD using a personal computer. An attempt is made to link programs incorporating a number of expert design rules with the process variables obtained by commercial FEM softwares, DEFORM and ANSYS, to form a useful package. The system is composed of three main modules and five sub-modules. The process planning and die design module considers several factors, such as the complexities of preform geometry, punch and die profiles, specifications of available cold farmer, and the availability of standard parts. As the system using 2D geometry recognition is integrated with the technology of process planning, die design, and CAE analysis, the standardization of die parts for wheel bolt requiring cold forging process is possible. The developed system makes it possible to design and manufacture quasi-axisymmetric cold forging product more efficiently.
Hardfacing is one of the frequently applying method to increase surface hardness in hot forging die. Recently, hardfacing receives great attention due to it's repair availability and low cost. In hot forging die, crack resistance and thermal shock resistance have been considered as major properties, However there are few studies for the assessment of these properties. So, it is necessary to establish the assessment method for crack resistance and thermal shock resistance in hardfacing for hot forging die. In this study, flux cored arc welding was applied to make hardfacing welds. Three point bending test was carried out to assess hardfacing weld's crack resistance, and high temperature bending test using salt bath was developed for thermal shock resistance. Consequently, it was possible to assess crack resistance and thermal shock resistance of hardfacing welds for hot forging die quantitatively.

A study on dissimilar friction-welded joints was performed for cam shaft applications using solid bar samples, 20mm in diameter, of forging steel(SF45) and carbon steel(SM45C). The main parameters of friction welding such as tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond of area, the heat affected zone (HAZ), and the observation of microstructure were investigated to ensure a good quality of friction welding through visual observations. The specimens were tested as-welded and post weld heat treatment(PWHT). This paper deals with optimizing the welding conditions and analyzing various rotary bending fatigue test(RBFT) properties about heat-treated base metal(BM), as-welded and PWHT. Consequently, two materials for friction welding are strongly mixed with a well-combined structure of micro-particles without any molten material, particle growth, or any defect. Moreover, the fatigue limit of BM(SF45) and PWHT for the RBFT were observed as 180MPa and 250MPa, respectively. It was confirmed that the PWHT causes approximately 40% improvement in the fatigue limit when compared to the BM(SF45).

It is useful to use NDE methods to assess the mechanical properties of materials since destructive methods are time-consuming and usually require cutting of sample from the material/component. In the present research, ultrasonic characteristics have been utilized to evaluate changes of mechanical properties due to heat treatment temperature and condition. The attenuation coefficient of ultrasonic wave increased as the heat treatment temperature because the grain size increased in size as the temperature. The attenuation coefficient decreased as the heat treatment has been progressed (quenched, tempered, PWHT). In the case of ultrasonic velocity measurement, velocity difference between quenched and tempered/PWHT was 40 m/s. There was a good relationship between the attenuation coefficient and the toughness. The relationship can be used for the nondestructive evaluation of the forged reactor vessels. Moreover, the method may be effectively used in the field application.

In recent years, the fatigue design method by analysis for the mechanical components and the welded structures has much increased, instead of the fatigue design method by rule that has been widely used from the past days. When a fatigue design is conducted by that method, the basic informations, fatigue life curves are mainly obtained from the results of the strain controlled low cycle fatigue test. From these point of views, the low cycle fatigue test is coming to be given a much importance lately. In this paper, the strain controlled low cycle fatigue properties at room temperature in air environment were investigated for the low carbon forged steel, SF45A, and the rolled steel for the welded structure, SM 41B. Throughout the test, strain ratio, R, was maintained constant with the fully reversed condition, -1. As the experimental results, the cyclic stress-strain behaviours of the test materials were different each other, but the low cycle fatigue life-time of them appeared to show little difference in the region of this test conditions.
In this paper, the results of monotonic loading analysis with four steel models and one composite model were shown. The effect that moment transfer efficiency of a web and strain concentration at a steel beam-to-column connections was investigated. Analysis results showed that the moment transfer efficiency of the analytical model with box-column was poor when comparing to model with H-column due to out-of-plane deformation of the box-column flange. The presence of scallop, thin plate of box column and floor slabs was also a reason of the decrease of moment transfer efficiency, which would result in a potential fracture of the steel beam-to-column connections. Analytical results were compared with experimental results based on previous test. As a result, the deformation capacity of connections with a box-column or a floor slab decreased due to the poor moment transfer efficiency and the strain concentration of beam flange in the vicinity of the steel beam-to-column connections based on the experimental data.
Until now, wall-slab plate of steel plate concrete has been constructed by joint. But, the shear plate has problems in the workability as well as structural integrity. This study investigates the behavior and strength of rib stiffened SC wall-slab connection. Seven prototype specimens of wall-slab connections were fabricated and tested. the structural safety of the specimens was confirmed through the monotonic loading test. Based on the experimental observations, this study propose the strength formula of the joint was proposed. To enhance the reliability of the proposed strength formula, analytical verification was performed through inelastic finite element analysis. Effect of parameters, such as, load point, friction coefficient, on the joint strength was examined. The proposed formula yields a conservative value for most cases.
