Soybean cultivars for bean sprouting, and for cooking with rice are related closely with Korean dietary tradition, but their yields have been kept in low level. The yielding responses of Danyup, a cultivar for bean sprouting and Gumjung, a cultivar for cooking with rice were compared with Paldal as standard cultivar in planting density within 10 to 80 plants per ㎡. Yield of Paldal increased as planting density increased from 10 plants up to 80 plant/㎡. But, Danyup reached at threshold as planting density reached up to 40 plants/㎡. Gumjung did not have significant difference in yield within planting density. Danyup had the highest yield, 445 kg/l0a at 80 plants/㎡. The highest yield of Paldal was 406kg/10a at 40 plants /㎡ while Gumjung had 373kg/ l0a at 40 plants. The yield responses of cultivars were influenced by canopy structure and light utilization. Paldal had short and straight canopy with determinate growth habit responded well at the heavy density, and had 6.2 in critical LA!. But Gumjung, tall and dense canopy with indeterminate growth habit had limited utilization of light within canopy with 5.4 in critical LAI and high rate of lodging. Gumjung was concluded as a low yielding cultivar, since it did not have good response to increasing source size and sink number.
The effect of planting densities on the growth of $Sedum$$samentosum$ (4 collections) was investigated using nutrient film technique (NFT) with Yamazaki' lettuce nutrient solution (1982) from September 5th to October 24th in non-heating plastic film house. At 40 days, the plant height of 4 collections showed the range of 15.0-18.9 cm, and mean plant height was high the order of $10{\times}10$, $2.5{\times}2.5$, and $5{\times}5cm$. The growth of 'Pohang' and 'Wando' collections was better compared to that of 'Gunsan' and 'Wanju' collections. Number of node, stem diameter, and fresh and dry weight per plant were decreased in higher planting density. Despite the lower fresh weight per plant obtained, the fresh yield per $m^2$ was significantly increased in higher planting density. The mean fresh yield was $14.9kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in $2.5{\times}2.5cm$, and 'Pohang' collection showed the highest fresh yield ($17.6kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$). The first optimized harvesting time base on plant height was 30-40 days after NFT culture during autumn season. In eating quality, compression force of stem and bitterness of shoot were decreased in higher planting density. However, the heavy labor demanding high density cutting needs to be improved for hydroponic culture of $S.$$samentosum$.

This study was conducted to identify the optimum nitrogen (N) fertilization at panicle initiation stage on ridge direct seeding on dry paddy of rice. During 1999~2000, a series of experiments was carried out at field (Chonbuk series) of the National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station, RDA using Dongjinbyeo. Plants were taller, and leaf area index and top dry weight increased with more N fertilization at panicle initiation stage. Photosynthetic rate of heading stage was higher at higher amounts of N fertilization at panicle initiation stage, especially in 6 kg/10a compared with 10 kg/10a seeding rate. Lodging index and its related traits did not significantly differ under different rates of N fertilization at panicle initiation stage. N uptake of the rice plant increased as more N fertilization at panicle initiation stage. N use efficiency was highest under the standard topdressing rate at 6 kg/10a seeding rate. Panicle number per m$^2$ increased with more topdressed N, but ripened grain rate and 1,000-grain weight of brown rice did not differ with an increase in topdressed N. Milled rice yield was 6% higher in the 6 kg/10a seeding rate and 13% higher in the 10 kg/10a seeding rate at 50% more topdressed N compared with 4.8 kg/10a N fertilization at panicle initiation stage of 6 kg/10a seeding rate.

A comparative study was performed in gnotobiotic and greenhouse conditions to evaluate the effect of exogenous application of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and inoculation of Methylobacterium spp. possessing 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (ACCD) and IAA activity on red pepperand tomato seedling growth and development. Application of 1.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ IAA positively influenced root growth while high concentrations (>10.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$) suppressed root growth of red pepper and tomato under gnotobiotic condition. On the other hand, inoculation of Methylobacterium strains with ACCD activity and IAA or without IAA enhanced root growth in both plants. Similarly, under greenhouse condition the inoculation of Methylobacterium sp. with ACCD activity and IAA enhanced plant fitness recorded as average nodal length and specific leaf weight (SLW) but the effect is comparable with the application of low concentrations of IAA. Seedling length was significantly increased by Methylobacterium strains while total biomass was enhanced by Methylobacterium spp. and exogenous applications of < 10.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ IAA. High concentrations of IAA retard biomass accumulation in red pepper and tomato. These results confirm that bacterial strains with plant growth promoting characters such as IAA and ACCD have characteristic effects on different aspects of growth of red pepper and tomato seedlings which is comparable or better than exogenous applications of synthetic IAA.

Light is an environmental component inevitably regulating photosynthesis and photo-morphogenesis, which are involved in the plant growth and development. Studies were conducted at the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines in 2004 and 2005, with aims to investigate 1) morphological responses of rice plants to low radiation, 2) morphological alteration of shade-grown plants when exposed to high light intensity, and 3) photosynthetic responses of shade-grown rice plants. Reduction in solar radiation by 40% induced increases in the area on a single leaf basis, biomass partitioning to leaves, and chlorophyll meter readings but brought about retardation of tiller development and decrease in above-ground biomass production of rice varieties. When the shade-grown plants from two weeks of transplanting to panicle initiation were exposed to full solar radiation after panicle initiation, they demonstrated less increase in chlorophyll meter readings and more decrease in leaf nitrogen concentrations from panicle initiation to flowering than control plants that were grown under the ambient solar radiation for whole growth period after transplanting. Shade-grown rice plants exhibited lower carbon assimilation rates but higher internal $CO_2$ concentrations on a single leaf basis than control plants, when measurements for shade-grown rice plants were made under the shading treatments. But when the measurements for shade-grown plants were made under the full solar radiation, light-saturated carbon assimilation rates were similar to control plants. Response of photosynthetic rates to varying light intensities was not considerably different between shading treatments and control. Yield reduction was observed in the shading treatments from panicle initiation to flowering and from flowering to physiological maturity, mainly by less spikelets per panicle and poor grain filling, respectively.

Rice-barley double cropping system is typical in southwestern part of South Korea. However, the information of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) exchange for barley growing season has still limited in comparison with rice. Using the eddy covariance (EC) technique, seasonal variation of $CO_2$ exchange was analyzed for the barley growing season at a rice-barley double cropping field in Gimje, Korea. The effects of environmental factors and biomass on the $CO_2$ flux also were investigated. Quality control and gap-filling of flux data were conducted before this analysis and investigation. The results indicated that $CO_2$ uptake increased rapidly at tillering stage and maximum net ecosystem exchange of $CO_2$ (NEE) occurred at the early of May, 2012 ($-11.2gCm^{-2}d^{-1}$), when the heading of barley occurred. NEE, gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (Re) during the barley growing season were -348.0, 663.3, and $315.2gCm^{-2}$, respectively. In this study, an attempt has been made to measure NEE, GPP, and Re with the help of the EC system for the barley growing season for the first time in Korea, focusing on $CO_2$ exchange between the biosphere and the atmosphere.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the optimum planting density in low fertilizing cultivation of machine transplanting in rice field of Honam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS for $2004{\sim}2005$. Sobibyeo which belongs to medium maturing variety and Nampyeongbyeo which belongs to medium-late maturing variety were transplanted on May 30. In this experiment, there was no significant difference in heading date between planting density and nitrogen fertilization rate, and heading dates were August 8 in Sobibyeo, and August 14 in Nampyeongbyeo respectively. In relation to lodging character, lodging Index was high where the nitrogen fertilization rate and planting density were high. As planting density increases, panicle number per $m^{2}$ increased irrespective of nitrogen fertilization rate. When nitrogen was 6 kg/10a, rice yield of Sobibyeo was more where planting density was 90 hill per $3.3m^{2}$, and that of Nampyeongbyeo was more where planting density was 80 hill per $3.3m^{2}$. When nitrogen was 9 kg/10a, rice yield of Sobibyeo was more where planting density was 100 hill per $3.3m^{2}$, and that of Nampyeongbyeo was more where planting density was 110 hill per $3.3m^{2}$. Head rice rate of brown rice was higher when planting density increased, and was higher at 6 kg/10a nitrogen rate than 9 kg/10a nitrogen rate in all varieties.
As the recent change of multiformity and taste in clination in eating habit culture is yearly in creasing foods used oil and fats. Because the frying food is especially important snack , it's safty is very essential. In order to know the safty and harmfulness of frying oil and fats. The 20 kinds samples were purchased chicken fried food shops around the north of seoul and kyunggi. The acid value, iodine value, peroxide value, TBA value, fatty acid, carbonyl value, and smoke point of deep fat fried oils were analyzed. Results of analyzed, A company of deep fat frying oil showed stability state and C company and B company of deep fat frying oil is acidification to turned. But D company of deep fat frying oil showed quite a bit acidification progressived of used hydrogenated oil.
This study was conducted to evaluate the winter active polycross progenies of 10 genotypes selected at the hot and dry climate of the Southern Oregon in their performance in the progeny test comparing with a high yielding variety, 'Fawn', and a winter active variety, 'TFM', as the control varieties at Daejon, Korea. Various plant and leaf characteristics, especially which related to photosynthesis, and forage production during the first summer after their establishment, were examined. The important conclusions of this study are summarized as follows: 1. The winter active genotypes and variety had less leaf fresh weight and dry weight per leaf than variety 'Fawn'. Variations among polycross progenies of genotypes for these characteristics were great. 2. The winter active genotypes and variety had less leaf area per leaf than variety 'Fawn'. Leaf area among polycross progenies of genotypes deviated greatly and poly cross progenies of 'genotype-16' had the same average leaf area as 'Fawn'. 3. Differences of specific leaf weight (S. L. W.) in the winter active genotypes and variety were not significant. Probably the genetic diversity for S. L. W were not big and were narrowed down already in this genetic population. It was suggested that the photosynthate production within the population might not be different and there might be differences in the photosynthate production-translocation balance. Further study for the diurnal change in S. L. W. within the population might be useful. 4. The winter active variety and genotypes had less leaf width than 'Fawn' does. Leaf width among polycross progenies of genotypes deviated significantly. 5. Differences among controls and polycross progeny group in the initial plant height were significant and variety 'Fawn' was taller than the winter active genotypes and variety. But the differences were not significant in the regrowth of plant height after the first forage harvest. On the contrary. the differences among polycross progenies of genotypes were not significant in the initial plant but the differences in their polycross progeny performance became obvious and great in the regrowth ability which is an improtent agronomic characteristics for forage crops produced in the pasture and for hay and silage. 6. Plant width of the winter active genotypes and variety was lesser than 'Fawn' variety. 7. Differences of tiller number became evident and variety 'Fawn' had higher tiller number than the winter active genotypes and variety after the first forage cutting. There, deviations among polycross progenies of genotypes were great for this characteristic. It was obvious that the genetic differences became more evident in the second measurement after the first cutting of forage probably because this characteristic were stimulated by defoliation in the cartain genotypes and variety. 8. The winter active genotypes and variety on the initial growth. the regrowth ability andtotal yield had lesser forage yield than variety 'Fawn'. Deviation of forage yield among polycross progenies of genotypes were great and gave basis for selection according to their polycross progeny performance improving the forage yield of these winter active tall fescue population during summer. 9. It was concluded that the winter active variety and genotypes in this study was poorer than variety 'Fawn' for the most of leaf and plant characteristics including forage yield. For these measurements, the variations among polycross progenies of genotypes were great. and plant breeding might able to improve further this winter active tall fescue through the polycross progeny testing method for the higher forage production during summer in Korea. 10. The result of the associations among various characteristics under study were quite agreeable with the results of the analysis of variance and woul be useful in the selection of desirable genotypes for the development of a new variety.
On July 8, 1977, 432mm of precipitation which is the largest daily storm in Korea fell on the city of Anyang where a nearby suburban community of Seoul. Average storm intensities of 90mm per hour were recorded during the period from 1900~2200 hours on this date. Area of landslides triggered by this storm is about 96 hectares resulting from 1,876 places within about 12,600 hectares of the watershed studied. These hazards injured hundreds of human lives and took 122 human lives. Rail and highway systems were disrupted and about 30 hectares of rice paddies were washed away and hundreds of hectares were inundated. About 500 houses were destroyed. The objectives of this study are (a) to describe the problem areas, identifying critical factors causing the landslide hazards including earth and stone-debris avalanches, (b) suggest measures which might enhance the effectiveness of stabilization measures, and (c) also suggest the landslide and flood damage prevention methods from the point view of the upper-watershed conservation techniques in Anyang hollow-basin.
