  • We analyzed the statistical properties for the conductive background fractures in the Low and Intermediate Level Waste(LILW) disposal site to conceptualize of its groundwater flow system. The background fractures were classified to fracture sets based on their trends and plunges that were obtained from the borehole logging data, and then the fracture transmissivity distribution was inferred from the fixed interval hydraulic test results. The fracture size distribution of each fracture set was estimated using the fracture density and fracture mapping data. To verify the analyzed results, we compared observed field data to simulated one from the DFN model that was constructed with the analyzed statistical properties of the background fractures, and they showed a good agreement.

  • The fracture transmissivity($T_f$) is the most important parameter of fracture in assessing groundwater flow in fractured rock masses by using the DFN(Discrete Fracture Network) modeling. $T_f$, the most sensitive parameter m DFN modeling, is dependent upon aperture, size and filling characteristics of each fracture set. In the field test, the accuracy of $T_f$ can be increased with Borehole Acoustic Scanning (Televiewer) and Fixed Interval Length(FIL) test in constant head. $T_f$ values measured from FIL test was modified and estimated by each fracture set on the basis of the Cubic Law and the information of aperture and filling characteristics obtained from Televiewer. The modified $T_f$ results in the increase of confidence and reliability of modeling results including the amount of tunnel inflow. And, this approach would reduce the uncertaintity of the assessment for groundwater flow in fractured rock masses using the DFN modeling.

  • Since groundwater flow paths have one of the major roles to transport the radioactive nuclides from the radioactive waste repository to the biosphere, the discrete fracture network model is used for the rock block scale flow instead of the porous continuum model. This study aims to construct a three dimensional discrete fracture network to interpret the groundwater flow system in the study site. The modeling work includes the determination of the probabilistic distribution function from the fracture geometric and hydraulic parameters, three dimensional fracture modeling and model calibration. The results of the constant pressure tests performed in a fixed interval length at boreholes indicate that the flow dimension around boreholes shows mainly radial to spherical flow pattern. The fracture transmissivity value calculated by Cubic law is 6.12${\times}$10$\^$-7/ ㎡/sec with lognormal distribution. The conductive fracture intensity estimated by FracMan code is 1.73. Based on this intensity, the total number of conductive fractures are obtained as 3,080 in the rock block of 100 m${\times}$100 m${\times}$100 m.

  • We hydrogeologically studied a mountainous area and its vulnerability to groundwater contamination. Groundwater flow and recharge occur mainly through a network of fractures in this areaTransmissivity and storativity obtained from slug, slug interference, and pumping tests range from 3.2$\times$10$^{-3}$ to 2.0$\times$10$^{-2}$$m^2$/min and 1.3$\times$10$^{-7}$ to 9.15$\times$10$^{-4}$, respectively. The groundwater was contaminated bylivestock activities in the upgradient. The groundwater in the downgradient residential area wasthreatened by the upgradient livestock activities.

  • A three-dimensional discrete fracture network model based on probabilistic characteristics of fracture geometry and transmissivity was designed to calculate the conductivity tensor and to estimate theanisotropy of conductivity. The conductivities, $K_p$, obtained from the numerical simulation of single-holepacker test corresponded well to those from the field tests. From this, it can be concluded that thefracture network model designed in this study can represent hydraulic characteristics of in-situ fractured rock mass. Block-scale conductivities, $K_b$, estimated from the modelling of steady-state flow through the REV-scale block were ranged between the arithmetic mean and harmonic mean of theconductivity estimates from packer tests. The conductivity along north-south direction was 1.4 timesgreater than that along the east-west direction. It was concluded that the anisotropy of conductivitywas insignificant. It was also found that there was a little correlation between $K_b$ and $K_p$. This would be to that the conductivities from the packer test simulation was strongly dependent on thetransmissivity and the number of fractures within the packer test intervals.

  • In this paper, the transmissivities obtained from the pulse test, the slug test and the constant head test were compared each other to assess an applicability and a reliability of the hydrogeological test method, which are commonly used to derive the hydrogeological properties of a crystalline rock at un underground research facility. When comparing the results of the pulse test and the slug test, the transmissivities were very similar in the entire test section of the medium. However, there was a little discrepancy in the results in the areas where the permeability is relatively high. The results of the constant head test on the same section showed the lower transmissivity than the results of the pulse test and the slug test on the highly permeable section. This difference in permeability was considered to be due to the difference in the radius of the hydraulic effect applied in each hydraulic test. When the heterogenetic distribution of fracture affects the hydrogeological properties on crystalline rock, it is believed that the hydrogeological characteristics can be explained through a constant head test or a constant flow rate test with a large hydraulic effective radius, as well as a pulse and a slug test that can identify hydrogeological properties in a relatively short time.

  • The block-scale groundwater flow system at Olkiluoto site in Finland was simulated. The heterogeneous and anisotropic hydraulic conductivity field for the domain was constructed from the discrete fracture network, which considered only the fractured zones identified in the deep boreholes installed in the study site. The groundwater flow model was calibrated by adjusting the recharge rate and the transmissivities of the fractured zones to fit the calculated hydraulic heads and into- and out-flow rates in the observation intervals of the boreholes with the observed ones. In the calibrated model, the calculated flow rates at some intervals were not in accordance with the observed ones although the calculated hydraulic heads fit well with the observed ones, which revealed that the number of the conduits for groundwater flow is insufficient in the conceptual model for groundwater flow modeling. Therefore, it was recommended that the potential local conduits such as background fractures should be added to the present conceptual model.

  • Intake of groundwater by tunneling in a mountainous area mostly results from groundwater flow through fractured parts of total rock mass. For reasonable analysis of this phenomenon the representative joint groups 1, 2, and 3 have been selected by previous investigations, geological/geophysical field tests and boring works. Three dimensional fractures were generated by the FracMan and MAFIC which is a three dimensional finite element model has been used to analyse a groundwater flow through fractured media. Monte Carlo simulation was applied to reduce the uncertainty of this study. The numerical results showed that the average and deviation of amounts of groundwater intaked into tunnel per unit length were $5.40{\times}10^{-1}$ and $3.04{\times}10^{-1}m^3/min/km$. It is concluded that tunnel would be stable on impact of groundwater environment by tunneling because of the lower value than $2.00{\sim}3.00m^3/min/km$ as previous and present standard on the application of tunnel construction.
