  • Flight data recorder is a equipment that records data required for investigation of aircraft accidents and should be developed in compliance with the ED-112A standard. Unlike general data storage device, flight data recorder must be able to recover data after an aircraft accident, requiring a housing and a memory board to protect data in extreme environments. To attain this performance, we designed a housing that can withstand the test by analyzing the physical environment of the impact, shear/tensile, penetration resistance and static crush test of the crash survival test and minimized the size and weight compared to the existing one in consideration of the installation of the aircraft in this paper. Insulation material and thermal block material were applied to endure high and low temperature fire so that the internal temperature does not rise above 150℃ even in 260℃, 10 hour environment. In addition, the memory board is designed to minimize the size and we devise a hoping programming method to prevent continuous data loss of more than 16 seconds. Through this, Crash protected memory module that satisfies ED-112A was completed.

  • Generally, the cargo tank of LPG carriers corresponds to an independent tank Type A defined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The outside of the tank is insulated by polyurethane foam, and the tank is made of expensive low temperature steel that can withstand temperatures as low as -50℃. The cargo tank is composed of outer shell plates, bulkheads, stiffeners, web frames, and stringers. Among them, the outer shell plates, bulkheads, and stiffeners can be designed without structural analysis by the Classification Rules and are constructed easily through optimal design. On the other hand, optimal design, including numerous structural analysis, is not performed because web frames and stringers should be designed and approved through structural analysis. Only adequate design, which determines the design dimensions through several dozen structural analysis, is performed. In this study, for finite element analysis, eight loading conditions were applied, and the deformation of the entire ship for each loading condition was considered. The minimum weight design was performed for the web frames of cargo tanks in the 82,000 ㎥ LNG carrier through the gradient-based optimization technique, and the weight was reduced by approximately 108 tons per ship.

  • High temperature heat generated during rifle firing not only degrades the performance of the weapon, but also limits the user's operation. In this study, temperature change of handguard according to firing was measured with reference to Human Engineering criteria and the operability according to material was examined. Accordingly, for the firing test, three types of Korean rifle and one overseas model were selected for each material of handguard, and firing test was conducted using a contact type temperature meter. The test result shows that using a plastic handguard with low thermal conductivity and aluminum handguard with high thermal conductivity enabled the rifles to be operated with bare hands even when firing at more than 100 rounds at low atmospheric temperature. However, when firing more than 60 rounds at over 20℃ atmospheric temperature, aluminum handguard use is limited. When firing quickly over 100 rounds, handguard use is restricted regardless of its fabrication material. To eliminate operational limitations by overheating, it is necessary to eliminate direct contact with skin using gloves, vertical grips, etc. This study examined the operability of rifles in terms of thermal risk, and the resulting study results are expected to be used as basic data for Human Engineering of other rifles and munitions.

  • The present study tested 5 concrete mixes to develop reliable mixing proportions for the sustainable alkali-activated(AA) foamed concrete as a thermal insulation material for the floor heating system of buildings. The AA binder used was composed of 73.5% ground granulated blast-furnace slag, 15% fly ash, 5% calcium hydroxide, and 6.5% sodium silicate. As a main variable, the unit binder content varied from $325kg/m^3$ to $425kg/m^3$ at a space of $25kg/m^3$. The test results revealed that AA foamed concrete has considerable potential for practical applications when the unit binder content is close to $375kg/m^3$, which achieves the minimum quality requirements specified in KS F 4039 and ensures economic efficiency. In addition, lifecycle assessment demonstrated the reduction in the environmental impact profiles of all specimens relative to typical ordinary portland cement foamed concrete as follows: 99% for photochemical oxidation potential, 87~89% for global warming potential, 78~82% for abiotic depletion, and 70~75% for both acidification potential and human toxicity.

  • A high-resolution electro-optical camera system, EOS-C, is under development in Satrec Initiative. This system is the mission payload of a 400-kg Earth observation satellite. We designed this system to give improved opto-mechanical and thermal performance compared with a similar camera system to be flown on the DubaiSat-1 system. The thermal control subsystem (TCS) of the EOS-C system uses heaters to meet the opto-mechanical requirements during in-orbit operation and it uses different thermal coating materials and multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets to minimize the heater power consumption. We performed its thermal analysis for the mission orbit using a thermal analysis model and the result shows that its TCS satisfies the design requirements.

  • In performing a series of in-situ thermal response tests, the effective thermal conductivities of six vertical closed-loop ground heat exchangers were experimentally evaluated and compared one another, which were constructed in a test bed in Wonju. To compare thermal efficiency of the ground heat exchangers in field, the six boreholes were constructed with different construction conditions: grouting materials (cement vs. bentonite), different additives (silica sand vs. graphite) and the shape of pipe-sections (general U-loop type vs. 3 pipe-type). From the test results, it can be concluded that cement grouting has a higher effective thermal conductivity than bentonite grouting, and the efficiency of graphite better performs than silica sand as a thermally-enhancing addictive. In addition, a new 3 pipe-type heat exchanger provides less thermal interference between the inlet and outlet pipe than the conventional U-loop type heat exchanger, which results in superior thermal performance. Based on the results from the in-situ thermal response tests, a series of economic analyses have been made to show the applicability of the new addictives and 3 pipe-type heat exchanger.

However, the demand is high for the technologies that can save energy significantly in everyday life that produce tangible benefits for the users by applying saving factors and that anyone can access easily when it comes the related procedure. Government policies related to the improvement of energy effect in the existing building structure are characterized by complex procedure. Moreover, cost required and reliability issue emerge when request is made to an expert. Accordingly, this study seeks to present energy improvement plan that can be utilized simply and conveniently at any place, any time by enabling customized design according to individual taste by enabling energy change amount and grade prediction when the users select only the part that they want to replace by using a simple program.

  • This research embarked on a comprehensive examination of the engineering characteristics of lightweight concrete intended for implementation in rhamen-type modular building walls. The concrete was formulated utilizing bottom ash and coated EPS beads, in accordance with the Korea Construction Standards Center(KCS) 14 20 20 "Lightweight Aggregate Concrete". Our findings articulate that while EPS beads tend to diminish the compressive strength of the lightweight concrete, they concurrently contribute to a notable reduction in unit mass. The porous nature of the bottom ash endows the material with diminished thermal conductivity. Significantly, a mixture containing 50% EPS beads and 50% BA20 aggregates, replacing half of the coarse aggregates, was found to meet the standard specifications.
