A large-scale high-temperature thermal energy storage(TES) was numerically modeled and the heat loss through storage tank walls was analyzed using a commercial code, FLAC3D. The operations of rock cavern type and above-ground type thermal energy storages with identical operating condition were simulated for a period of five consecutive years, in which it was assumed that the dominant heat transfer mechanism would be conduction in massive rock for the former and convection in the atmosphere for the latter. The variation of storage temperature resulting from periodic charging and discharging of thermal energy was considered in each simulation, and the effect of insulation thickness on the characteristics of heat loss was also examined. A comparison of the simulation results of different storage models presented that the heat loss rate of above-ground type TES was maintained constant over the operation period, while that of rock cavern type TES decreased rapidly in the early operation stage and tended to converge towards a certain value. The decrease in heat loss rate of rock cavern type TES can be attributed to the reduction in heat flux through storage tank walls followed by increase in surrounding rock mass temperature. The amount of cumulative heat loss from rock cavern type TES over a period of five-year operation was 72.7% of that from above-ground type TES. The heat loss rate of rock cavern type obtained in long-period operation showed less sensitive variations to insulation thickness than that of above-ground type TES.

This study, having combined and displaced fly ash known as admixture material that delays hydration reaction with coarse particle cement("CC" hereinafter) collected in particle classification method during ordinary portland cement("OPC" hereinafter), reviewed the hydration heat characteristics affecting the concrete. To reduce hydration heat, the study plain-mixed which used 100% OPC for WB 50% level 1, displaced CC at level 3 of 25%, 50% and 75% for OPC, and by displacing FA with admixture material at level 5 of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%, experimented totally 16 batches. As a result of experiment, in the case of flow, the more CC displacement rate increased, the more it tended to decrease, and the more FA displacement rate increased, the more it decreased. As for simple adiabatic temperature rise by the CC and FA displacement rates, it decreased as displacement rate increased, and particularly in the case of FA40, temperature rise amount, $5.8{\sim}7.4^{\circ}C$, was very low. Compressive strength decreased in proportion to displacement rate, however strength reduction increment was shown to decrease with age progress.

To analyze possibility for high performance concrete that massively displaces blast furnace slag, this study analyzed the characteristics of concrete by blast furnace slag displacement rate changes, and the results are summarized as follows. Firstly, as for fresh concrete characteristics, flow tended to increase and air amount decreased with increase in blast furnace slag displacement rate, and settling time was shown delayed. As for hardened concrete characteristics, in conditions where blast furnace slag displacement rate increased up to 50%, the compressive strength decreased below OPC at early age, however at age 28 days, its level was no less than that of OPC, and as for temperature rise by simple insulation, it decreased as displacement rate increased at early stage of hydration, but in the latter stage, hydration progress slowed down and hydration heat increased.

This study aims to develop a rapidly hardening type of concrete to achieve the removal of form intensity (more than 10MPa) using the method of curing at room temperature in order to solve some economic environmental problems by omitting the steam curing process involved in producing PC (Precast Concrete). Therefore, this study evaluated a rapidly hardening cement containing a high amunt of C3S, which is very responsive in expressing early intensity, and a rapidly hardening type of concrete which uses some hardening accelerator to increase thehydration reaction of $C_3S$. The results of the experiment on concrete using some hardening accelerator are asfollows. In the slump flow experiment for identifying the liquidity and the air test, the desired values were met. The compression strength showed rapid expression response by 12 hours, and met the desired value within 6~9 hours. Its drying shrinkage value and Autogenous shrinkage value were measured as below ($-754.5{\times}10^{-6}$),and satisfied the requirements. In addition, in the Semi-Adiabatic Temperature Test, it was found that the concrete rose to its peak temperature within 24 hours and then its temperature dropped.

This study carried out a Mock-up test to apply Low-heat Cement (CF) that is adjusted to a fineness of $3,000\;{\pm}\;200\;cm^2/g$ by substituting Coarse particle Cement (CC) and fly ash with ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), then applied it on-site. The result of the test is as follows. The Mock-up test showed that the amount of admixture in CF increased SP agent and AE agent slightly more compared to OPC, while temperature history showed that the highest temperature of CF was around $6{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ lower than that of OPC. Compressive strength in CF was low compared to that of OPC, but the strength width became narrow at the age of 28 days, which is not considered to be significant. In on-site application, slump, air content and chloride content all satisfied the target values, while the temperature history showed that the highest temperature in the center by each cast was about $34^{\circ}C$ in the first cast, $42^{\circ}C$ in the second cast, and $39^{\circ}C$ in the third cast. Compressive strength of specimen for strut management showed low value compared to standard curing, but its strength was reduced at the age of 28 days.

Objective of this study is to identify properties on strength increase of hardened concrete and fluidization of non-hardened concrete using waste ceramics generated by construction waste, which is a type of industrial waste, and by ceramics, which is a clay plastic, during its production process, and determine length change ratio caused by drying shrinkage during substitution of recycle aggregate and waste ceramics, and whether they can be used as concrete compounds. Slump of non-hardened concrete exhibited the best fluidization and formability at recycled aggregate's replacement ratio of 60% driven by higher substitution ratio of recycled aggregate and waste ceramics while air content met the KS requirement when substitution ratio of waste ceramics was $4,000cm^2/g$. Compressive strength of hardened concrete exceeded the requirements at early age and standard age and temperature dropped by roughly $6{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ less than the standard at maximum temperature in adiabatic temperature increase, which will hopefully result in stronger durability.
The reaction behavior of rigid polyurethane foams were studied on the effects of gelling catalysts of amine type, such as; dimethylcyclohexyl amine (DMCHA) and of potassium type, such as; potassium octoate (PO). Rigid polyurethane foams were provided with polymeric 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, polyester polyol, silicone surfactant, blowing agent and a few gelling catalysts. As the contents of catalyst, DMCHA increased from 0 to 2.0 g, the reaction time decreased from ca. 330 to ca. 35 sec and due to the exothermic reaction, the maximum temperature increased from ca. 217 to ca. $234^{\circ}C$, respectively. As the contents of PO increased from 0 to 2.5 g, the reaction time decreased from ca. 79 to ca. 38 sec and the maximum temperature increased from ca. 182 to ca. $271^{\circ}C$, respectively. The kinetic parameters were calculated and the conversions were based on the temperature rising method of adiabatic process. As the content of DMCHA increased, the rate constant $k_0$ increased. But in the case of PO catalyst, $k_0$ did hardly depend upon its amount, and showed us similar reaction rate constants.
Groundwater in small islands is used as main water resource but the overuse of groundwater may cause seawater intrusion and temperature decrease in geothermal wells. This study aimed to characterize the hydrogeology of Maeum-ri area in Seokmo Island of Ganghwagun using long-term monitoring at groundwater wells and geothermal wells. In the monitoring period seasonal water level change, consistent drop or increase of water levels are not detected. The groundwater temperature about 10m below ground surface shows year cycle variation having two to five months difference with ambient temperature cycle. The storativity was calculated by tidal method. The storativity estimated by adapting tidal efficiency factor showed some larger values than that by using tidal time lag. The result suggested that the tidal method assuming several assumptions on aquifer condition may produce broad ranges but the calculated ranges at this application are reasonable. The similar shape of groundwater level change and tidal effects was observed at several wells clustered east-south-east direction which may implicate the distribution of vertical fracture system strongly related with groundwater flow channels. The applied methodology and study results will bc valuable to evaluate optimal pumping rate for the preservation of groundwater resources, and to manage geothermal development.

In summer and winter, the difference between the temperature during the day and that during the night is high, which leads to various problems during concrete placement, such as cracks and defects in the concrete as well as low durability and strength. Although nuclear power plant concrete is widely used for placement in all seasons, particular attention must be paid to its quality during the summer. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of a cooling method for mixing water, which is a commonly used hot weather precooling method, and the use of a retarder, on the characteristics of Nuclear Power Plant concrete. In the cooling method for mixing water, cold water at 5 was used, with 50% of the water content consisting of ice flakes. The effects of using a retarder were evaluated by reviewing the characteristics of the cement at the unset stage and after hardening. To evaluate the characteristics of the unset cement, we measured the slump, air volumes, setting times, and pressure strengths after hardening. Furthermore, we measured the heat of hydration at different temperatures; the loss of heat was minimized using insulation. Both the slump time and the complete ageing time of the air volume were found to be 120 min at $20^{\circ}C$ and 40 min at $40^{\circ}C$. In the case when the cooling method for mixing water was used and in the case when a retarder was used, the initial and final sets by penetration resistance were delayed, and the delay decreased with increasing air temperature. For the heat of hydration, the cooling method for mixing water not only lowered the maximum temperature but also delayed its attainment. However, the use of a retarder had no effect on the maximum temperature. Moreover, in the early ages (e.g., 3 and 7 days), the pressure strength of the concrete was lower than that of plain cement. However, the strength of 28-day concrete met the standard construction specifications.
Understanding on nutrient solute movement during the course of freezing and thawing was attempted through laboratory and field obsevations. Small sectioned tubes with 5cm inner diameter, 0.2cm thick and 1cm long were connected to 30cm long soil columns for laboratory study. The columns were filled with soil, and treated with 20mmol/kg $KNO_3$ for upper 5cm. The upper end was set in the freezing section, and the lower end was set in the refrigerating section of a refrigerator. Temperature was controlled at $-7({\pm}1)^{\circ}C$ and $1.5({\pm}1)^{\circ}C$, respectively. After top 5cm soil was frozen, the columns were sectioned, and analyzed for $NO_3^-$, $NH_4^+$ and $K^+$. For field study, the 20cm inner diameter and lm long soil columns were installed in Chuncheon and Daegwanryung, where the altitude was 74m and 840m, respectively. The soils used were silt loam and clay loam. The top 20cm soils were treated with 50mmol/kg as $KNO_3$. The soil columns were taken during winter freezing and after thawing. By laboratiry study, upward movement of $NO_3^-$ and $K^+$ during the course of freezing was confirmed. The upward movement of $K^+$ was, however, one fifth to one tenth of $NO_3^-$. The upward movement of inorganic nitrogen as well as laboratory during the course of freezing, but large amount of nitrogen was lost from the profile after thawing in early spring. Leached nitrogen from the upper 20cm to lower part was 17 to 24 percents. The maximum depth of leaching during the experiment was 50cm for all soils. The net loss of inorganic nitrogen from the whole profile ranged 8.7 to 39.5 percents. The net loss was greater in Daegwanryung where temperature was lower and snowfall was larger than Chuncheon, and the loss was greater from the silt loam soil than clay loam soil of which percolation rate was small. The results implied that reasons for nitrogen loss during the winter might include surface washing by snow melt as well as leaching and denitrification.
