  • This paper reports the fluid flow and heat transfer around a module cooled by forced air flow generated by a piezoelectric(PZT) cooling fan. A flexible PZT fan with distortion in a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure which was mounted on a PCB in a parallel-plate channel($450{\times}80{\times}700mm^3$) accelerates surrounding fluid locally. Input voltages of 20-100V and a resonance frequency of 23Hz were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The cooling effect using a PZT fan was larger than that of free convection. Fluid flow around the module were visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distribution around heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film(LCF). We found that the flow type was y-shaped and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a piezoelectric cooling fan.

  • Liquefied natural gas(LNG) is natural gas that has been converted temporarily to liquid form for ease of storage and transport it. Natural gas is the worlds cleanest burning fossil fuel and it has emerged as the environmentally preferred fuel of choice. In Korea, the demand of this has been increased since the first import from the Indonesia in 1986. LNG takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state by cooling it to approximately $-162^{\circ}C(-260^{\circ}F)$. The reduction in volume therefore makes it much more cost efficient to transport and store it. Modern LNG storage tanks are typically the full containment type, which is a double-wall construction with reinforced concrete outer wall and a high-nickel steel inner tank, with extremely efficient insulation between the walls. The insulation will be installed to LNG outer tank for the isolation of cryogenic temperature. The insulation will be installed in the base slab, wall and at the roof. According to the insulation's arrangement, the different aspects of temperature transmission is shown around the outer tank. As the result of the thermal & stress analysis, by the installing cellular glass underneath the perlite concrete, the temperature difference is greatly reduced between the ambient temperature and inside of concrete wall, also reducing section force according to temperature load.

  • Heat transfer modeling was performed in order to study a natural solar heating system. Simulation of the system was obtained by writing instantaneous energy balance equations for the various components. A thermal-network provided the means for systematically accounting for each of the energy balances. The resulting balances were solved using time varying inputs, such as solar gain and ambient temperature, and the initial temperatures of the components. Parametric heat transfer calculations were performed. Results are discussed which illustrate several effects, including variation of thermal capacity of the storage wall, installation of night insulation, installation of a thermally controlled fan between the sunspace and room, and variation of the width of the sunspace.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate adiabatic wall temperature and heat transfer coefficient around a module cooled by forced air flow. The flow angle of attack to the module were 0$^{\circ}$and 45$^{\circ}$. In the first method, inlet air flow(1~7m/s) and input power.(3, 5, 7W) were varied after a heated module was placed on an adiabatic floor(320$\times$550$\times$1㎣). An adiabatic wall temperature was determinated to use liquid crystal film. In the second method to determinate heat transfer coefficient, inlet air flow(1~7m/s) and the heat flux of rubber heater(0.031~0.062W/$m^2$) were varied after an adiabatic module was placed on rubber heater covering up an adiabatic floor. Additional information is visualized by an oil-film method of the surface flow on the floor and the module. Plots of $T_{ad}$ and $h_{ad}$ show marked effects of flow development from the module and dispersion of thermal wake near the module. Certain key features of the data set obtained by this investigation may serve as a benchmark for thermal-design codes based on CFD.

The cooling effect using a PZT fan was independent of the vent area ratios at the channel inlet and was similar to the forced convection cooling. • Natural convection heat transfer has been investigated numerically in the vertical annulus filled withsaturated porous material for the aspect ratio less than unity. The inner wall of the annulus is exposed to constant heat flux condition and the outer wall is cooled to keep isothermal condition. The upper and the lower horizontal wall are assumed to be insulated. Under conditions ranging 50 .leq. Ra .leq. 10000, 1 .leq. RD .leq. 12, the characteristics of flow and heat transfer have been investigated. The results show that average Nusselt numbers increase when the radius ratio increases and the multicellular flows are not detected under the present conditions. Isothermal lines are plotted within the porous media. Temperatures of the inner wall with constant heat flux conditions and the local heat flux rate of the cooled outer wall with constant temperature are also obtained.

  • In most cryogenic liquid rocket engines, liquid oxygen manifold and injector are not thermally insulated from room temperature environment fur reducing system complexity and the weight. This feature of cryogenic liquid rocket engine results in the situation that cryogenic liquid oxygen flow is easy to be vaporized especially in the vicinity of the manifold and the injector wall. The research in this paper is focused on two-phase flow phenomena of liquid oxygen in rocket engine. Vapor fraction was estimated by comparing the measured two-phase flow pressure drop in engine manifold and the injector with ideal single phase pressure drop. Heat flux into cryogenic flow is estimated by measuring the wall temperature on the engine manifold to examine boiling characteristics. Suitable correlations for cryogenic two-phase flow were also reviewed to see their applicability. In addition, the effect of vapor generation in liquid rocket engine manifold and injector on engine performance and stability was considered.
