  • With the wide applications of fiber-reinforced composite material in aero-structures and mechanical parts, the design of composite joints have become a very important research area because the joints are often the weakest areas in composite structures. This paper presents an analytical study of the stress distributions in mechanically single-fastened and multi-fastened composite laminates. The finite element models which treat the pin and hole contact problem using a contact stress analysis are described. A dimensionless stress concentration factor is used to compare the stress distributions in composite laminates quantitatively In the case of single-pin loaded composite laminate, the effects of stacking sequence, the ratio of a hole diameter and the width of a laminate (W/D ratio), the ratio of hole diameter and distance from edge to hole (E/D ratio), friction coefficient and clamping force are considered. In the case of multi-pin loaded composite laminate, the influence of the number of pins, pitch distance, number of rows, row spacing and hole pattern are considered. The results show that P/D ratio and E/D ratio affect more on stress distributions near the hole boundary than the other factors. In the case of multi-pin loaded composite laminate, the stress concentration in the double column case is better than the other cases of multi-pin loaded composite laminate.

  • In this study, we investigate the deformation behavior of F.C.C. single crystals containing micro- or submicron-sized voids by using three dimensional finite element methods. The locally homogeneous constitutive model for the rate-dependent crystal plasticity is integrated based on the backward Euler method and implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) by means of user-defined subroutine (UMAT). The unit cell analysis has been investigated to study the effect of stress triaxiality and crystallographic orientations on the growth and coalescence of voids in F.C.C. single crystals.

  • When MWK (Multiaxial Warp Knitted Fabric) composites are applied for the structures, the connections of each component using mechanical fastening is needed. The local contact between the bolted joint and the composite laminates may induce high stress concentration or breakdown in the laminates for the mechanical joints. There for, it is strongly required to study the characteristics of mechanically joints of MWK composite laminates. In this study, stress analysis near the hole boundary of MWK composite laminate is conducted with various geometric factors under different loadings. In the case of multi-pin loaded MWK composite laminates, the results show that the types of loadings and geometric factors of mechanical joints have a significant influence on the joint performances.

  • Multi-axial compression tests have been frequently adopted for the evaluation of material properties of rock cores and rock fracture model tests. Special care has to be applied on the boundary condition between the specimen and loading platen to draw the precise test results of the multi-axial compression tests. With the use of dry steel platen, the stress rotation will occur, due to the frictional restraint from the boundary between the specimen and loading platen. The restraint will deviate the expected test results under the conditions of the given external pressures. Various methods have been applied to reduce the side restraint along the specimen/loading platen interface. The steel brush type loading platen is one example of the attempts. In this paper, a new type of loading platen is introduced to overcome the limitation caused by the use of the brush type loading platen, which requires some internal space for the installation of the brushes. The new type of loading platen, roller supported steel piston type loading platen. is constituted of shot steel pistons which have sufficient stiffness to deliver the external pressure and the shaft type roller installed at the rear of the pistons. The pistons are designed to follow the local deformation of the specimens. In this paper, structural details of the loading platen are presented and frictional and biaxial compression tests results are shown to verify the required functions of the loading platen. Furthermore, calibration process is followed by a comparison between the test results and numerical analyses.

  • The lateral reinforcements of concrete such as hoops and spiral bars are known to confine concrete to compensate the strength loss due to fire by reducing explosive spalling and improving the capacity of ductility. In this context, a study was conducted to investigate the residual mechanical properties of confined and unconfined concrete($f_{ck}$=60MPa) after a single thermal cycle at 300, 600, $800^{\circ}C$. The main parameters required to establish the stress-strain relationship are the peak stress, the elastic modulus, and the strain at peak stress. The knowledge of the residual mechanical properties of concrete is necessary whenever the thermally damaged structure is required to bear a significant share of the loads, even after a severe thermal accident. Based on the results obtained in this study, the residual stress of confined concrete under thermal damage is higher according to the level of confinement and the larger strain made it to have better ductility. The decreasing ratio of elastic modulus from the relationship of stress and strain was also smaller than that of unconfined concrete.

  • The proposed model can predict the compressive behaviors of concrete confined with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jacket. To model confining concrete by FRP jackets, the hypoelasticity-based constitutive law of concrete In tri-axial stress states has been presented. The increment of strength of concrete has been determined by the failure surface of concrete in tri-axial states, and its corresponding peak strain is computed by the strain enhancement factor that is proposed in the present study, Therefore, the newly proposed model is a load-dependent confinement model of concrete wrapped by FRP jackets to compare the previous models which are load-independent confinement models. The behavior of FRP jackets has been modeled using the mechanics of orthotropic laminated composite materials in two-dimension. The developed model is implemented into the incremental analysis of compressive tests. The verification study with several different experiments shows that the model is able to adequately capture the behavior of the compression test by including better estimations of the axial responses as well as the lateral response of FRP-confined concrete cylinders.

  • Rolling contact fatigue of an urban railway wheel was analysed during its rolling. A FEM analysis was performed using a 3D modelling of rail and wheel, considering the slope of the rail and nonlinear isotropic and kinematic hardening behavior of the rail and the wheel. The maximum von-Mises stress and contact pressure between the rail and wheel were 656.9 MPa and 1111.4 MPa, respectively, under axial load of 85 kN with friction coefficient of 0. The fatigue initiation life prediction relationships by strain-lifetime (${\varepsilon}$-N) and Smith-Watson-Topper method were drawn for the wheel steel as follows: $N_i=7.35{\times}10^6{\times}SWT^{-3.56}$ and $N_i=5.41{\times}10^{-9}{\times}(\frac{{\Delta}{\varepsilon}}{2})^{-5.77}$. The fatigue lifetimes of the wheel due to rolling contact were determined to be infinite by ${\varepsilon}$-N and SWT methods.

  • The role of fatigue on the surface damage of 5% chrome cold milling work roll is evaluated. Uniaxial and torsional fatigue tests are carried out, and the baseline data for fatigue life evaluation are established. An appropriate multiaxial fatigue parameter is developed from the fatigue data. Fatigue tests are also performed under compressive mean stresses, and a mean stress model is formulated. A computer program is developed to assess the interaction of fatigue and grinding of the roll. The fatigue damage is computed for selected servicing conditions. It is found that the fatigue damage can be an important issue when the effect of mean stress is ignored, however the fatigue damage is negligibly small when the effect of mean stress including the residual stresses currently used is fully accounted. The result indicates that spalling due to the growth of thermal shock cracks is more important than fatigue damage in roll surface failure.

  • The objective of this study is to perform extensive parametric studies of the lateral-torsional buckling of short 1-beams under repeated loadings, and to gain a further insight into the lateral-torsional beam buckling problem. A one-dimensional geometrically (fully) nonlinear beam model is used, which includes superposed infinitesimal transverse warping deformation in addition to finite torsional warping deformation. A multiaxial cyclic plasticity model is also implemented to better represent cyclic metal plasticity in conjunction with a consistent return mapping algorithm. The general response for the lateral-torsional buckling of short I-beams under repeated loadings is examined through several parametric studies around the standard case : the material yield strength, the yield plateau, the strain hardening, the kinematic hardening, the residual stresses, the load eccentricity with respect to the shear center, the height of the load with respect to the cross-section of the beam, the location of the load along the length of the beam, the dimensions of the cross-section of the beam and the fixity of the supported end remote from the load.
