  • The fast pyrolysis characteristics of lignocellulosic biomass are investigated for a bubbling fluidized bed reactor by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To simulate multiphase reacting flows for gases and solids, an Eulerian-Eulerian approach is applied. Attention is paid for the primary and secondary reactions affected by gas-solid flow field. From the result, it is scrutinized that fast pyrolysis reaction is promoted by chaotic bubbling motion of the multiphase flow enhancing the mixing of solid particles. In particular, vortical flow motions around gas bubbles play an important role for solid mixing and consequent fast pyrolysis reaction. Discussion is made for the time-averaged pyrolysis reaction rates together with time-averaged flow quantities which show peculiar characteristics according to local transverse location in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor.

  • In this paper, the numerical simulation of the gas-liquid flow in a cylinder cyclone separator is performed to investigate the flow characteristics using a commercial software, FLUENT, which solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RaNS) equations. First, a single-phase flow with water in a gas-liquid cylinder cyclone(GLCC) separator is simulated and compared with the experiments(Farchi, 1990) and numerical simulations(Erdal, 1997). Then, the characteristics of the multi-phase flow for water-air, mud-only, and mud-air cases are discussed in the view point of the feasibilities for a mud handling system.

  • We conduct numerical simulations of the interaction of a deformable structure with two-phase compressible flow. The finite volume method (FVM) is used to simulate fluid phenomena including a shock wave, a gas bubble, and the deformation of free surface. The deformation of a floating structure is computed with the finite element method (FEM). The compressible two-phase volume of fluid (VOF) method is used for the generation and development of a cavitation bubble, and the immersed boundary method (IBM) is used to impose the effect of the structure on the fluid domain. The result of the simulation shows the generation of a shock wave, and the expansion of the bubble. Also, the deformation of the structure due to the hydrodynamic loading by the explosion is identified.

  • In this study, it is performed numerical simulation on multi-phase flow by means of CIP-CSI2 scheme. It is applied In a two-phase free surface flow problem at a high density ratio equivalent to that of an air-water system, for examining the computational capability. The method that is being developed and improved is a CIP(Constrained Interpolation Profile) and CSL2(Conservative Semi-Lagrangian) based Cartesian Grid Method.

  • A comprehensive mechanistic model has been used to determine the flow pattern for gas-oil two-phase flow in pipes of petroleum production system. Depending on operational parameters, geometrical variables, and physical properties of the two phases, the two phases shows a specific flow patterns. For different parameters of the system, How pattern were compared for wide range of superficial velocities of oil and gas. In a variety of parameters, the inclinational angle and superficial velocities of oil and gas are the most dominant factors in determining the flow patterns for two-phase flow in pipelines. Other parameters such as pipe diameter and fluid properties have a limited effect on the change of flow patterns except for near transition. The mechanistic model is shown to be useful to determine the flow pattern in situations where either an experimental evaluation in a laboratory or reliable correlations are not available.

  • In this paper, we have performed a parametric study on the characteristics of multiphase laminar flow with density difference in various microchannels. The interface between multiphase fluids is rotated by the gravitational forces induced by density difference. The numerical simulations were carried out via commercial CFD package to study the characteristics of multiphase laminar flow. The results of the numerical simulations in this study were verified by comparing with the previously reported experimental results in the literature. We have also proposed a new dimensionless relationship between dimensionless rotation angle of interface and dimensionless parameters are proposed for square microchannels with various aspect ratios. The dimensionless relationship could be widely applied to the reliable design of various microfluidic devices dealing with multiphase laminar flow.

  • Glass particle distribution in a stirred solid/liquid systems was investigated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). The numerical results were compared to experimental data from the available literature which investigated the local dispersed phase volume fraction by means of an endoscope technique. Eulerian multi-phase model and applications considered high loading of solid particle was used to investigate the influence of the particle concentration and mixing tank size on the solid distribution. A good agreement was obtained between the experimental data and simulation results. The results showed different solid particle distribution in an agitator by particle concentration and mixer size.

  • In the present paper, a numerical method based on the constraint interpolation profile (CIP) method is applied for simulating two-dimensional violent sloshing problems. The free surface boundary value problem is considered as a multiphase problem which includes water and air. A stationary Cartesian grid system is adopted, and an interface capturing method is used to trace the shape of free surface profile. The CIP combined unified procedure (CCUP) scheme is applied for flow solver, and the tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) scheme is used for interface capturing. Numerical simulations have been carried out for partially-filled 2D tanks under forced sway and roll motions at various filling depths and frequencies. The computational results are compared with experiments and/or the other numerical results to validate the present numerical method.

  • Supercavitating torpedo uses the supercavitation technology that can reduce dramatically the skin friction drag. The present work focuses on the numerical analysis of the non-condensable cavitating flow around the supercavitating torpedo. The governing equations are the Navier-Stokes equations based on the homogeneous mixture model. The cavitation model uses a new cavitation model which was developed by Merkle(2006). The multiphase flow solver uses an implicit preconditioning scheme in curvilinear coordinates. The ventilated cavitation is implemented by non-condensable gas injection on backward of cavitator cone and the base of the torpedo. The comparison between the without and with ventilated cavitation numerical results, with ventilated cavitation using non-condensable gas injection is more efficient method.
