  • Multidisciplinary design optimization methodologies play an essential role in modern engineering design which involves many inter-related disciplines. These methodologies usually require very long computing time and design tasks are hard to finish within a specified design cycle time. Parallel processing can be effectively utilized to reduce the computing time. The research on the parallel computing performance of MDO methodologies has been just begun and developing. This study investigates performances of MDF, IDF, SAND and CO among MDO methodologies in view of parallel computing. Finally, the best out of four methodologies is suggested for parallel processing purpose.

  • Compared with the conventional ground rocket launching, air-launching has many advantages. However, comprehensive and integrated system design approach is required because the physical geometry of air launch vehicle is quite dependent on the installation limitation of the mother plane. The system design has been performed using two different approaches: the sequential optimization and the multidisciplinary feasible(MDF) optimization method. Analysis modules include mission analysis, staging, propulsion analysis, configuration, weight analysis, aerodynamics analysis and trajectory analysis. MDF optimization shows better result than sequential optimization. As a result of system optimization, a supersonic air launching rocket with total mass of 1244.91 kg, total length of 6.18 m, outer diameter of 0.60 m and the payload mass of 7.5 kg has been successfully designed.

  • This gaper discusses a multidisciplinary design optimization of the engine mounting system to improve the ride quality of a vehicle and to remove the possibility of the resonance between the powertrain system and vehicle systems. The driveline model attempts to support engine mount development by providing sufficient detail for design modification assessment in a modeling environment. Design variables used in this study are the locations, the angles and the stiffness of an engine mount system. The goal of the optimization is both decoupling the roll mode ova powertrain and minimizing the vibration transmitted to the vehicle including the powertrain, simultaneously. By applying forced vibration analysis for vehicle systems and mode decouple analysis for the engine mount system, it is shown that improved optimization result is obtained.

  • MDO (multidisciplinary design optimization) technology has been proposed and applied to solve large and complex optimization problems where multiple disciplinaries are involved. In this research. an MDO problem is defined for automobile design which has crashworthiness analyses. Crash model which are consisted of airbag, belt integrated seat (BIS), energy absorbing steering system .and safety belt is selected as a practical example for MDO application to vehicle system. Through disciplinary analysis, vehicle system is decomposed into structure subspace and occupant subspace, and coupling variables are identified. Before subspace optimization, values of coupling variables at given design point must be determined with system analysis. The system analysis in MDO is very important in that the coupling between disciplines can be temporary disconnected through the system analysis. As a result of system analysis, subspace optimizations are independently conducted. However, in vehicle crash, system analysis methods such as Newton method and fixed-point iteration can not be applied to one. Therefore, new system analysis algorithm is developed to apply to crashworthiness. It is conducted for system analysis to determine values of coupling variables. MDO algorithm which is applied to vehicle crash is MDOIS (Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Based on Independent Subspaces). Then, structure and occupant subspaces are independently optimized by using MDOIS.

  • Aircraft design pursues integrated design efforts by considering all design elements together. In the integrated design environment, it is crucial for the design data to be consistent, free of errorm, and most recent. Database design process consists of the analysis of the data which shall be stored and managed, the construction of the E-R Diagram, and the mapping of the database table. As a DBMS (DataBase Management System), Oracle 8i is employed to design and construct the database. The database design methodology is devised to apply for the several MDO(Multidisciplinary Design Optimization) techniques like MDF(MultiDisplinary Feasible), IDF(Individual Discipline Feasible), and CO(Collaborative Optimization). The defined process is demonstrated through a couple of design examples, including a simple numerical example and a UCAV(Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle) design optimization.

  • Recently Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Based on Independent Subspaces (MDOIS), an MDO (multidisciplinary design optimization) algorithm, has been proposed. In this research, an MDO problem is defined for design of a belt integrated seat considering crashworthiness, and MDOIS is applied to solve the problem. The crash model consists of an airbag, a belt integrated seat (BIS), an energy absorbing steering system, and a safety belt. It is found that the current design problem has two disciplines - structural nonlin- ear analysis and occupant analysis. The interdisciplinary relationship between the disciplines is identified and is addressed in the system analysis step in MDOIS. Interdisciplinary variables are belt load and stiffness of the seat, which are determined in system analysis step. The belt load is passed to the structural analysis subspace and stiffness of the seat back frame to the occupant analysis subspace. Determined design vari- ables in each subspace are passed to the system analysis step. In this way, the design process iterates until the convergence criterion is satisfied. As a result of the design, the weight of the BIS and Head Injury Crite- rion (HIC) of an occupant are reduced with specified constraints satisfied at the same time. Since the system analysis cannot be formulated in an explicit form in the current example, an optimization problem is formu - lated to solve the system analysis. The results from MDOIS are discussed.

  • Multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) for a suspension component of the vehicle front suspension was performed in this research. Shapes and thicknesses of the subframe were optimized to satisfy multi-disciplinary design requirements; weight, fatigue, crash, noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), and kinematic and compliance (K&C). Analyses procedures of the performance disciplines were integrated and automated by using the process integration and design optimization (PIDO) technique, and the integrated and automated analyses environments enabled various types of analytic design methodologies for solving the MDO problem. We applied an approximate optimization technique which involves sequential sampling and metamodeling. Since the design variables for thicknesses should be dealt as discrete variables. the evolutionary algorithm is selected as optimization technique. The MDO problem was formulated three types of problems according to the order of priorities among the performance disciplines, and the results of MDO provided design alternatives for various design situations.
