Tide and Tidal Currents Around the Archipelago on the Southwestern Waters of the South Sea, Korea (한국 남서해 다도해역의 조석·조류 특성)

  • In order to estimate the tide and flow properties around the archipelago, around Dolsan, Choyak, Geogeom and Jindo which located in the southwestern waters of the south sea of Korea, tidal currents, residual flows and tidal energy dissipation were investigated by using 2-dimensional numerical model. The maximum speeds of tidal currents are small around Dolsando(31.92 cm/s) and large around Jindo(87.55 cm/s). The residual flow is fastest around Choyakdo where many channels and islands as compared with other study areas. The area around Jindo has the highest currents speed, but shows the flat movements. The margins between the maximum and the minimum dispersion rates of tidal energy in the areas are estimated and designate the order of values around Dolsando($392.6{\times}10^7$ erg/s), Geogeumdo($125.7{\times}10^7$ erg/s) and Jindo($23.1{\times}10^7$ erg/s) sequently. These circumstances are same as in the amplitude of M2 constituent. This means that rapid depth changes and narrow channels play an important role in tide and tidal currents energy in archipelago.

Distribution of Naturalized Plants in Dadohae National Marine Park (다도해 해상국립공원의 귀화식물 분포 특성)

  • A total of 10 islands (Kumodo and Komundo in Yeosu City; Oinarodo in Goheung County; Chongsando, Soando, and Pogildo in Wando County; Chodo in Jindo County; Uido, Huksando, and Hongdo in Shinan County) were surveyed to confirm distribution of naturalized plants from June 2006 to December 2008. A total of 100 naturalized plants taxa from 25 families were recorded. The highest number of naturalized plant species (82 taxa) was recorded on Oinarodo, while the lowest number was recorded on Hongdo (42 taxa) and on Uido (34 taxa). A total of 26 naturalized species taxa (such as Dactylis glomerata, Lolium perenne, Bromus unioloides, Rumex obtusifolius, Chenopodium album, Phytolacca americana, Barbarea vulgaris, Lepidium apetalum, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Trifolium repens, Erigeron annuus, Erigeron canadensis, Senecio vulgaris, Xanthium strumarium) was recorded in all study areas. Distribution of naturalized plants were categorized into 7 habitat types based on ecological traits: afforested land, beach, port, and vacant land, road boundary, road cut and slope area, waste arable land, landfill area, and wetland. Systematic management is required to conserve unique landscape, species diversity, vegetation and ecosystem of Dadohae National Park. In order to manage the naturalized plants in Dadohae National Park, basic surveys are most needed to understand distribution and dispersal of naturalized plants communities based on ecological features of each habitat type.

DGPS service analysis in the korean coastal ferry route (국내 연안 여객선 항로에서의 DGPS 서비스 분석)

  • Based on the DGPS radio wave measurement in the coast of the yellow-sea, south-sea and east-sea, the DGPS service regions in the korean coastal ferry route are analyzed in this paper. The impact of obstacles on the propagation due to the archipelago and island regions are measured and analyzed in the point of service region. The ocean-based DGPS reference stations provide the wide DGPS ocean service regions with signal strength more than $40dB{\mu}V/m$ and signal-to-noise ratio more than 10 dB. Based on the overlapping of the service regions between the DGPS reference stations, the DGPS services with good quality are provided in the coastal ferry route segments. In case of regions where the propagation obstacles are scattered, the increasingly good service can be provided under conditions of output power reinforcement and antenna efficiency enhancement.

Otter Habitat Analysis and Regional Development Strategies in Dadohae National Park Using GIS Techniques (GIS기법을 이용한 다도해국립공원의 수달 서식가능지 분석과 지역개발 정책에 관하여)

  • Hongdo and Huksando belong to the Dadohae national park parks in Korea and are famous sightseeing spots in Shinahn-gun. One of the keystone species in this area is otter (Lutra lutra). We accomplished field works for finding its present habitat and condition analyses for the potential habitat in the area via spatial analyses with digital elevation model and satellite imagery. Isolated condition with coastal cliffs was one of the superior conditions over habitat in the main land, but the road kills of small animals were also observed. Three underground eco-corridors were suggested for the protection of otter habitat in the Shinahn-gun area. Regional development strategies of Shinahn-gun should be focused on the protection of safe and pristine habitat for otter population.
