  • For the development of an improved upper-stage engine, research on a staged combustion cycle liquid rocket engine is in progress. A cold flow test, ignition test, and combustion test plans were established and performed to develop reignition combustion technology. In order to solve the problem of purge gas flowing into the fuel line, which may cause cavitation in the turbo pump during reignition, the test results of each stage were analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the purge gas inflow problem was solved by reducing the overlapping time between the operation of the bubble removal valve and the opening of the purge valve and the engine fuel valve. Based on this, the reignition combustion test was successfully performed.

  • A research area on liquid rocket engine has been suggested. Downsizing through combustion pressure rise and low price are major issues to gas generator cycle engines. A very high pressure turbopump and material against oxidizer rich environment may be necessary technologies for staged combustion cycle engines. Integrated analysis saving computing time is the trend of rocket engine systems analysis area. Other important research topics are the methane engine for reusable booster to reduce the cost, 3D printing and materials for high temperature or oxidizer rich environment.

  • For the control of pre-burner combustion pressure, the open angle of the TTR (Throttle for Thrust Regulation) valve was varied from $143^{\circ}$ to $185^{\circ}$ while testing cold flow, ignition, and combustion. The major performance variables of rocket engines and hydraulic performance of the TTR valve regarding the open angle were verified. However, the controllability of pre-burner combustion pressure was not verified due to the limitations of the test. Comprehensive research will be done after addressing these problems.

  • Engine is one of the most important parts in a rocket for completing its mission successfully. In this paper, we provide a methodology for estimating reliability and development cost of a liquid rocket engine newly developed. To estimate reliability, a baseline engine is selected considering factors whose effects on reliability are unquantifiable. Then reliability of a baseline engine is adjusted to reflect the effect of factors that can be modeled quantitatively. Using the previous Transcost engine cost expressed in terms of mass and the number of hot firing tests, the engine development cost is reexpressed in reliability and thrust requirements. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the application of the methodology to a turbopump rocket engine using staged combustion cycle with LOX/LH2 propellant.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute has developed a staged combustion cycle rocket (SCCR) engine with high specific impulse to send a 3-ton class satellite into geostationary orbit while conducting a Korean Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV) II project. The SCCR engine is different from the KSLV-II engine, which is an open cycle engine using a gas-generator. The SCCR engine with a closed cycle engine is composed of a pre-burner, a turbo pump, and a main combustor. The technology demonstration model (TDM0) was assembled and tested in the 7ton-class engine combustion test facility of Naro Space Center, and the combustion test was successfully conducted.

  • The present study developed a design code for preburner of staged combustion cycle engines, which calculates preburnt gas at high-pressure oxidizer-rich conditions and predicts conjugate heat transfer and hydraulics of cryogenic fluid flow through cooling passages. It has been written based on the open-source library Cantera, into which this study has incorporated new source codes to predict correctly non-ideal thermodynamics and transport anomalies of the cryogenic fluid. For a preburner of 100 tonf-class booster engine currently under preliminary design, the present code demonstrated predictive capability and usability as a design code by comparing with CFD simulation.

  • The power-pack combustion test of technology demonstration model(TDM0) for 9 tonf-class staged combustion cycle engine development was conducted in the Upper-stage Engine Test Facility(UETF) of Naro Space Center. The power-pack model of TDM0 was composed of a pre-burner, a turbo-pump and propellant supply systems without a main combustor. In the power-pack combustion test, we confirmed the linked working condition and verified the main functional variation of the power-pack for the engine system test.

  • Staged combustion cycle engines exhibit higher combustion performance compared with open cycle engines with a gas generator. An advanced research of the staged combustion cycle engine is going on for the next program following the KSLV-II program. Various experiments have been carried out for the technology demonstration model, TDM0A and TDM0B. The experiments on the combustion performance are aimed to understand the engine start condition and combustion characteristics. They also aim to develop the oxidizer-rich pre-burner and the combustor of the staged combustion cycle engine. The engine-shaped model, TDM1A is fabricated based on the experimental data. The combustion experiment of the TDM1A shows that the combustion pressure of the combustor is approximately 91 bar and the turbine rotation is approximately 28,00 rpm. The result is stable and satisfies the development requirements. The present paper reports on the development process and characteristics of engine models from TDM0A to TDM1A.

  • In this paper, the process of electro Ni and electro Cr plating is studied for the purpose of thermal barrier to protect the inner wall combustion chamber. The chamber is under the environment of very high temperature and high pressure when propellants burn in there. As one of the thermal barrier coatings, Zr-based thermal spray coating has been applied to the chamber. However, peeling of coating layer can occur under such a hard condition because of the difference of thermal expansion coefficients between the ceramic and the metallic wall. We study the characteristics of Ni-Cr coating and establish its process. It is found that the thickness of over $100{\mu}m$ of Ni and Cr coating layers with the uniformity of ${\pm}10%$ can be obtained with the used of as-developed plating bath.

  • The technology development of a high performance upper stage engine for a GEO(GEostationary Orbit) KSLV(Korea Space Launch Vehicle) is undergoing in Korea Aerospace Research Institute. KSLV is composed of an open cycle engine with gas generator, which is for a low orbit launch vehicle. However the future GEO launch vehicle requires a high performance upper stage engine with a high specific impulse. The staged combustion cycle engine is necessary for this mission. In this paper, current progress and future plan for staged combustion cycle engine development is described.
