  • Because of the development of computational resources, an entire structure in which many components are combined can be analyzed. To do so, the calculation time and number of data points are increased. In many practical industry structures, there are many parts with repeated patterns. To analyze the repetitive structures effectively, a homogenization method is usually employed. In a homogenization module, including commercial programs, it is generally assumed that a unit cell is repeated in all directions. However, the practical industry structures usually have complicated, repeated patterns or structures. Complicated patterns are difficult to address using the conventional homogenization method. Therefore, in this study, a multilevel homogenization method was devised to consider complex regularities. The proposed homogenization method divides the structure into several areas and performs multiple homogenizations, resulting in a more accurate analysis than that provided by the previous method.

  • Multistage interconnection networks(MINs) provide a high-bandwidth communication between processors and/or memory modules in a cost-effective way. In this paper, we propose a class of multipath MINs, called the Augmented Modified Delta(AMD) network, and analyze its performance and reliability. The salient features of the AMD network include fault-tolerant capability, modular structure, and high performance, which are essential for real-time parallel/distributed processing environments. The class of the AMD network retains well-known characteristics of the Kappa network, but it's design procedure is more systematic. Like Delta networks, all the AMD networks are topologically equivalent with each other.

  • Adaptive noise cancellation techniques are ideally suitable for reducing spatially varying noise due to the grain structure of material in ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation. Grain noises have an un-correlation property, while flaw echoes are correlated. Thus, adaptive filtering algorithms use the correlation properties of signals to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the output signal. In this paper, a multi-stage adaptive noise cancellation (MANC) method using adaptive least mean square error (LMSE) filter for enhancing flaw detection in ultrasonic signals is proposed.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive hybrid genetic algorithm (ahGA) approach for effectively solving multistage-based scheduling problems in flexible manufacturing system (FMS) environment. The proposed ahGA uses a neighborhood search technique for local search and an adaptive scheme for regulation of GA parameters in order to improve the solution of FMS scheduling problem and to enhance the performance of genetic search process, respectively. In numerical experiment, we present two types of multistage-based scheduling problems to compare the performances of the proposed ahGA with conventional competing algorithms. Experimental results show that the proposed ahGA outperforms the conventional algorithms.

  • In this paper, we study fault-tolerant multicasting in multicomputers based on multistage interconnection networks (MIN’s). In addition to one-to-one routing among processing nodes, efficient multicasting has an important effect on the performance of multicomputers. This paper presents a multicasting algorithm to tolerate faulty switching elements. The proposed algorithm uses the cube encoding scheme to represent multicast destinations in MIN, and is based on a recursive scheme in order to bypass faults. This algorithm can route any multicast message to its own destinations in only two passes through the MIN containing several faulty switching elements. Moreover, we prove the correctness of our algorithm by exploiting well-known nonblocking property of MIN.

  • In general, we can use an inverted index for retrieving element lists from structured documents. An inverted index can retrieve a list of elements that have the same tag name. In this approach, however, the cost of query processing is linear to the length of a path query because all the structural relationships (parent-child and ancestor-descendant) should be resolved by structural join operations. In this paper, we propose an inverted index technique and a novel structural join technique for accelerating XML path query evaluation. Our inverted index can retrieve element lists for path segments in a parent-child relationship. Our structural join technique can handle lists of element pairs while the existing techniques handle lists of elements. We show through experiments that these two proposed techniques are integrated to accelerate evaluation of XML path queries.

  • The main girders and cross-beams of an H-beam bridge consisted of factory-made H-beams, providing better conditions for quality control. Also, on-site fabrication works can be minimized and most of the stiffeners can be omitted, enabling simple and economic construction. In this study, the effect of the Multi-Stepwise TPSM (M-TPSM) on improving the maximum span length and section efficiency is analyzed. Compared to a 30-m-long, five-girder conventional plate girder bridge, structural analysis results showed that 50.7~55.1% of the girder height and 24.1~26.2% of the self-weight may be reduced by the application of M-TPSM to a five-girder H-beam bridge constructed with H-$900{\times}300$beams. In case of conventional H-beam bridges without M-TPSM, it was found that seven girders are required for a similar level of load-carrying capacity. Therefore, it is concluded that by the application of the M-TPSM, the H-beam bridge would become one of most cost-competitive options for short- and medium-span bridges.

  • This study used the multistage hierarchical clustering image classification to analyze the satellite images for the land-cover types of an area in the Korean peninsula. The multistage algorithm consists of two stages. The first stage performs region-growing segmentation by employing a hierarchical clustering procedure with the restriction that pixels in a cluster must be spatially contiguous, and finally the whole image space is segmented into sub-regions where adjacent regions have different physical properties. Without spatial constraints for merging, the second stage clusters the segments resulting from the previous stage. The image classification of hierarchical clustering, which merges step-by step two small groups into one large one based on the hierarchical structure of digital imagery, generates a hierarchical tree of the relation between the classified regions. The experimental results show that the hierarchical tree has the detailed information on the hierarchical structure of land-use and more detailed spectral information is required for the correct analysis of land-cover types.

  • This paper proposes to improve the results of image classification with spatial region growing segmentation by using an MRF-based classifier. The proposed approach is to re-classify the pixels in the boundary area, which have high probability of having classification error. The MRF-based classifier performs iteratively classification using the class parameters estimated from the region growing segmentation scheme. The proposed method has been evaluated using simulated data, and the experiment shows that it improve the classification results. But, conventional MRF-based techniques may yield incorrect results of classification for remotely-sensed images acquired over the ground area where has complicated types of land-use. A multistage MRF-based iterative class-modification in boundary is proposed to alleviate difficulty in classifying intricate land-cover. It has applied to remotely-sensed images collected on the Korean peninsula. The results show that the multistage scheme can produce a spatially smooth class-map with a more distinctive configuration of the classes and also preserve detailed features in the map.

  • The objective of the research is to develop an algorithm for the optimum design of two-dimensional braced steel frames using an advanced analysis, which considers both material and geometric nonlinearties. Since both nonlinearties are considered in analysis process, Optimum design algorithm which does not require to calculate K-factor is presented. A multi-level discrete optimization technique with two parameters that uses the information of structural system and separate member has been developed. The structural analysis is performed by the relined plastic-hinge method which is based on zero-length plastic hinge theory. Optimization problem are formulated by AISC-LRFD code. The feasibility, validity and efficiency of the developed algorithm is demonstrated by the results of the braced steel frame.
