The purpose of this study is to investigate the current nationwide status of the multicultural and multilingual library services in Korea. To do this, a survey aimed at the public libraries, the non-governmental organizations and the governmental bodies that provided library services with multicultural and multilingual materials was conducted. Also, 15 librarians and the persons in charge were interviewed. As a result of this study, some recommendations not only regarding national library policies but also regarding public libraries providing multicultural library services to local users were suggested.

교육의 국제화로 인해 국내 대학에 재학 중인 유학생의 수가 매년 증가하고 있다. 그러나 유학생들이 학습 자원을 얻기 위한 가장 큰 정보원인 대학도서관은 유학생들을 위한 다국어 지원 서비스를 충분히 제공하고 있지 않은 상황이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 대학도서관에서 제공하는 서비스 중 다국어 지원이 가능한 서비스 요인들을 선정하고 해당 요인들이 유학생들의 대학도서관 이용 만족도에 미치는 영향을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 선행연구를 바탕으로 사서/직원의 서비스(응답능력, 태도), 도서관 시설 이용(시설 안내, 장비 사용), 자료 접근 및 이용(홈페이지, 서가 배치), 이용자 서비스(이용자교육, 기타서비스)를 요인을 도출하였고 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과에 따르면 도서관 시설 이용이 대학도서관 이용 만족도에 가장 큰 영향을 미치고 있었으며 사서/직원의 서비스와 이용자 서비스 또한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

An academic library is one of the largest information sources for international students to obtain learning resources, which have a great impact on their studies. However, most academic libraries currently have not provided adequate multilingual services except English, which makes it difficult for international students whose mother language is not English to perform academic work. Accordingly, the present study defines the customized services for international students as the ones that have been supported in ltiple languages among academic library services and aims to examine their effect on user satisfaction in academic libraries. Furthermore, the study has compared international students' satisfaction with academic libraries - one that provides appropriate customized services with the other that does not. The surveys have been conducted with Chinese international students in two different universities and a total of 138 responses were analyzed. The study found that the customized services for the international students influenced their satisfaction with library use. In particular, multilingual services had positive effects on satisfaction with services such as brochures/signs, access to and use of resources through the homepage, and user instruction. The findings of the study suggest practical insights on how academic libraries provide effective services for supporting international students' academic tasks.

The large scale documents of the data repository are utilized to the diverse applications. In the cross-language information retrieval, if the words of a query contain polymorphic meanings, the system needs multilingual corpus to exactly translate to the target words. We constructed the financial comparable corpus, called KFCM(Korean Financial Corpus corresponding to MLCC Corpus), comparing to the MLCC Polylingual Documents which consisted with the 6 European languages. It is independently constructed under the DTD of MLCC comparable corpus, and can be utilized to the cross-language information retrieval. In this paper, we discussed about the application and construction procedures of KFCM which is public domain data.

This research deals with the study of the Arlington Public Library and present situations of public libraries providing Korean language materials services in the United States. The focus of this research is on aspects of the Arlington Public Library, Texas : collecting, classifying, Possessing. circulating, and managing the Korean language materials. In addition, this research includes the description of the current trends of Korean language services in public libraries around the US with literature review methods. This research would be a useful steppingstone when libraries in other countries begin services with Korean language materials, or when public libraries in Korea begin to provide foreign language services.

Purpose: This study was done to develop and evaluate multilingual education materials to promote health and adaptation to pregnancy for immigrant women in Korea. Methods: This study had three procedures: First, contents of the education materials were developed according to pregnant women's needs, literature reviews, and group discussion. Details in contents were constructed based on Roy's adaptation model; Second, validity verification and translation of education materials were accomplished; Third, evaluation of the education materials was done through a survey of immigrant women. Results: The education materials were developed in six languages (Korean, English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, and Cambodian). The title is "Healthy mother, happy family: eight-step guide to a healthy pregnancy". It was composed of an eight-step guide to healthy pregnancy, self-examination check list, websites for childbirth education and information, and guidelines on education materials in a brochure. In the evaluation, the average response score for the questionnaire items was high (3.23 on a four-point Likert scale). The average score for Cambodian immigrants was the highest of all immigrant women. Conclusion: Multilingual education materials developed in this research will help community health nurses to manage pregnancies for immigrant women and will be useful for health education for these women.

The aim of this study is to investigate current status of archiving activities related to producing, collecting and managing information resources of multicultural agencies and organizations in Dae Gu. To do this, 12 agencies and organizations including Multicultural Team of Dae Gu, multicultural family support centers, foreign worker support center, NGOs for immigrants and public libraries were visited. As a result, these agencies and organizations have struggled for producing information resources through online and off-line, collecting information resources from external bodies and managing information resources like official documents, counseling reports, multicultural books and artifacts. But there were problems in archiving information resources. In order to solve problems, first, multicultural agencies and organizations should reinforce responsibilities to produce, collect and manage information resources. Second, public libraries should actively try to collect and organize information resources from these agencies and organizations. Finally, cooperative archiving activities between multicultural agencies and organizations and public libraries are needed.

This study is purposed to analyze the appearances and functions of ellipsis of case markers through the Hangul letters of Hyun-Poong Kwak's family in the early 17th century. Hangul letters appear more colloquial than typography, and ellipsis is the one of main features of it. Generally, 'ellipsis' occurs when a constituent of a sentence deliberately leaves out of a sentence, because it is repeated or can be deduced by the context or occasion. As Hangul letter is written for a specific person, 'ellipsis' occurs more often than typography written for unspecified individuals. The ellipsis of case markers are not an exception. The ellipsis has functions as follow. The first, function is 'brevity.' Communication can be more convenient by ellipsis. Next will be 'informality.' Informality caused by ellipsis can make people express their thoughts and feelings fluently and naturally. It is the reason that spoken language has more frequently occurred ellipses than written language. The third function is 'quickness.' The same information can be delivered more quickly by the sentence using ellipsis than not using. In the 21st Century, ellipsis is misused in netizen communication owing to the quickness. The last function should be 'the effect of a literary style.' The effects can embody through ellipsis such as 'rhythm effect', 'letter style effect', 'translation style effect.' As a result of analyzing ellipsis of case markers, frequency follows the order below.[subjective objective > Locative > Dative > Commutative > Instrumental]

This study was conducted under the premise of providing the model for the construction of the library and the digital library in PUST, the joint construction from South and North Korea. First, we determined the problems in the construction of digital libraries as well as possible issues that may rise from the construction of the digital library in PUST. The results of the research showed that there were imminent problems from the operation of a digital library with the inadequate progress in the Held of copyright. In addition, the difference in the language system and the knowledge foundations of the two countries will produce problems in the homepage access, database construction, and information retrieval. In order to overcome these predictable problems, this research proposes the following: (1) parallel operation of both digital and high-drive libraries; (2) duplexing the homepage through the application of unicode concerning the digital library; (3) development and application of converted letter codes through the establishment of NCHAR data type; and (4) construction of an authority database.

This study investigates the transitional aspect of vowel harmony in Korean verbal conjugation. By observing the patterns of harmonic and disharmonic tokens of 42 verbal stems searched for in the National Institute of Korean Language (NIKL) Korean Dialogue Corpus 2020/2021, I found that disharmonic tokens appeared less than 0.1% of time, most of which consisted of an /a/-stem with a monosyllabic sentence-final suffix. It was noted that disharmonic pattern started to spread to other suffixes and possibly to /o/-stems. A simple perception test showed that the disharmonic forms might have originated from vowel reduction or undershoot. These results suggest that the ongoing change is accounted for from both the articulatory and perceptual perspectives.
